Trader Joe's Brooklyn Opens Next Week

bktraderjoes.jpegIt seems like just yesterday that Marty Markowitz was standing there in his Hawaiian shirt, announcing the borough's first Trader Joe's. Now, the Brooklyn Paper reports it will be opening in the landmark Independence Bank building as soon as next week! September 26th, to be exact. "The supermarket will open at 9 am and the festivities will feature giveaways, live music," and of course, more Markowitz. But be warned winos, this location at the corner of Atlantic Avenue and Court Street will not have Two-Buck Chuck, or any wine at all.

This would be useful if I could afford to live anywhere near there.

    Two-buck chuck is wine?

  • woodendesigner

I don't know why everyone is griping over not having wine. There are several really good wine shops in the neighborhood with a great selection and price range.

I am in agreement that Sahadi's is better. There are some cool things about Trader Joe's but if you look at some of the products you would not believe where they came from. They sell bottled water and cheddar cheese from New Zealand. Do people really need New Zealand Water? WTF!!!

In the same vein, the mondo kosher supermaket Pomegranate is now open in Midwood.

    Why no wine?

  • citylion

    Hmm, mixed feeling here.

On one hand, it'll be convenient for quick pick ups on the bike ride home from Manhattan. But on the other hand, the food coops in Brooklyn, like the park slope and Flatbush ones, are pretty inexpensive and have saved me the traveling into the city.

I wonder if the smaller scale natural product stores will be effected negatively and how they feel of their new neighbor...

They should be opening another location in Manhattan. It's been 2 1/2 years of lines around the store and lines out the door in Union Square (TJ's, for the record, is the closest grocery store to my apartment). If they haven't been able to figure out how to open another Manhattan store in a viable location and turn a profit, it's hopeless.

  • NannyState

Charles Shaw wine is the nastiest cheap plonk I've ever tasted and they use processed cheese in many of their sandwiches. TJs is way overblown.

  • Headzo

How could this possibly reduce the lines at the Union Square location?

  • Gothamist_Cynic

who cares about wine. hopefully this will help decrease the lines at the union square location.

  • sarahlucy

yeah, they're not legally allowed to sell wine.

  • lanciano

what? no wine store?!?! is there no end to the bad news today? that's the best part of Trader Joes.

and yeah, sahadi's is the bomb.

  • las2381

no wine at all... how stupid

  • Rfive

    Sahadi's kicks ass. F*ck trader joe's.

  • sarahlucy
