Obama's Lead in NY Falls to 5 Points Over McCain

2008_09_obmcny.jpgNY State is considered to be a blue state, but a new poll from Siena College Research Institute finds that Barack Obama's lead over John McCain has fallen to just five points. Previously, Obama's lead was 18 points in June and 13 points in July.

Respondents believe that Obama is the best candidate on issues economy, Iraq, health care and education, while they seem to prefer McCain on terrorism and "Enhancing America's strength in the world." But for personal attributes, McCain gets the nod on patriotism, experience, integrity and leadership, while Obama is considered more compassionate and intelligent. And while they find McCain (79%) more qualified than Obama (67%), Sarah Palin is considered even less qualified than Obama with 47% (Joe Biden got 70%).

Siena New York Poll spokesman Steve Greenberg said, “The conventions are over. The running mates are set. And as voters begin to focus on the race, New York’s overwhelming Democratic enrollment advantage is not reflected in how voters tell Siena they plan to vote.” And in Long Island, the Dowling Institute found Obama just leads by 5 points on Long Island as well. Dowling's Michael Dawidziak believes that the selection of Palin after the DNC "squelched" Obama's bounce and that McCain got a bigger bounce and benefited from the RNC being near Labor Day (more people watching).

I dont see why not McCain..You were stupid enough to vote Hilary into NY.

  • Jen S

If Americans vote McCain into office, we're really the dumbest shits on the planet.

  • The Man Bat

Obama in a landslide......and you know why? Palin. Americans will come to their senses and realize she is in no way shape or form ready to be a heartbeat away from that much power.

Sorry, that's 4EVs for New Hampshire.

This is just one poll from one pollster and it looks like an outlier (numerically distant from other polling data). According to pollster.com which uses trend estimate numbers from all available public polls, NY stands, as of this minute, at Obama 52.5 to McCain 35.7 which keeps us safely in the Strong/Obama category.

Nationally, they have Obama at 238 electoral votes to McCain's 224. There are 76 tossup votes. The tossup states are: Nevada (5 Electoral Votes), Montana (3 EV), Colorado (9 EV), New Mexico (5 EV), Michigan (17 EV), Ohio (20 EV), Virginia (13 EV) and New Hampshire (3EV).

The first guy to get to 270 EVs on Nov 4 wins. Right now we're very close nationally, but again, not in NY.

All you hipsters from the out West, down South, and all points in between; you need to rush back to save your goddamn, ignorami, redneck cousins.

I'm talking about Liberal Missionary work here people. Real Robert De Niro and Jeremy Irons in "The Mission" type of work. Bring your works of Chomski and Vidal and spread the Good Word to those savages.

    Mouthbreathers for MCCain

  • Think2wice

Who the hell are these respondents?! Are they survivalists/militias holed up in the Adirondacks? Do they have issues with "negros" and "commies"?

And here I was all ready to give my vote to Ron Paul. Looks like I'm gonna have to vote Obama to keep STUPID, STUPID MIDDLE AMERICANS from fucking themselves...AGAIN!!

    Jesus Christ!

  • Roquentin

In the bigger picture this thing is starting to look bleak. I'm beginning to seriously fear and consider the possibility that McCain and Palin will win this, and by inauguration day we'll have 4 more years of war, Jesus, and tax cuts for the rich to look forward to. And when that's done I'm not even sure the fools in this country won't come back asking for another helping.

But it isn't over just yet. A lot can happen between now and November.

"Who the fuck is Siena College Research Institute?"

Some Catholic college. They probably had some clueless undergrads conduct their "research."

You just killed my boner for a week.

How's this for the tinfoil hat crowd:

BO takes a dive to keep the neocon war machine in power and bring about the apocalypse for the Evangelicals. I get the movie rights.

This was a bunch of boring BS when NY Mag posted it yesterday. Playing on the irrational fears of a bunch on nervous nellies isn't nice, Gothamist. Sit back, relax, and watch Obama take the state and the country. McCain's had his little bounce. And now it's over. Sanity will prevail.

#5 - no, not hilary. Ariel from the little mermaid comes in and it's a straight up fivesome.
