Missing Teacher Found in Water Rescue Off S.I.

The Daily News reports that Hannah Upp, the NYC Teaching Fellow missing since August 29, was found hours ago after she "jumped into the chilly waters off Staten Island in an apparent suicide attempt."

The News says Upp "jumped off of a pier on the Staten Island side...[and] was found about a mile off Staten Island's St. George section just before noon." The Staten Island Advance spoke to a passenger on a ferry boat who said, "I saw a speedboat pull up. I saw that there was a person in there. You could see [the person] lay their head back like they were dazed."

Upp teaches at the Thurgood Marshall Academy but went missing shortly before the school year began. Friends and family were worried as police also aided in trying to find the 23-year-old, who was seen last week at the Fifth Avenue Apple Store. She was conscious and taken to Richmond University Medical Center.

A decent looking woman goes missing, bloggers unite, Facebook groups form & she turns out to be just your average loon who can't hack life in the big city? What a waste of time & "news."

Well, teachers don't make a lot of money. Maybe she was hoping this would result in a tv movie, like that woman who got arrested for her library books last month?

"absolutely beautiful? whoa, let's not get carried away"

    "LOL - No kidding."

"She has the face of a three day old "floater."

ah...right: three-percenters. You wouldn't like the taste of the food I eat, either.

    "She's absolutely beautiful..."? Huh?

Unstable. Why does the dept. of ed always attract these winners?

  • schizofriendly

Reminds me of that runaway bride scammerella a few years back.

  • Snoopy

Think about the children please! Have they been sitting in a classroom all this time waiting for their teacher to show?

I guess she figured that Staten Island really isn't really what it's cracked up to be and started swimming back?

  • AggieAngst

I feel kinda suicidal at the beginning of each school year myself. I sympathize.

    Somebody went off her meds.

I have a friend like this who's bi-polar. It's tough being friends with wackjobs. I went to the All points west festival and she made me depressed at a radiohead concert. Unbelievable. I'm always talking her out of her depression but I'm just fed up now.

The first few posts by Gothamist commenters, with their astounding lack of sarcasm of mockery, were beginning to worry me. Thank you, zodak!

    Lk..me and you both!

  • matukonyc

I'm glad she's all right, but I wish that the thousands of mentally ill people who populate our streets garnered even a small fraction of the attention paid to her.

  • Lkpnyc

Maybe she figured, after getting caught checking email while she was supposed to be 'missing,' that she'd better do SOMETHING. Or was this a serious attempt?

I gotta get out of TV. It's making me cynical as hell.

Where was the crew of that ferry when Spalding Gray took his fatal dive?

    "She's absolutely beautiful..."

Hope she gets the help she needs now.

  • JacqueMehoff

seconded, glad there was no foul play involved.

well except for yesterday's lehman news, maybe that drove her over the edge.

  • WorksInDUMBO

Wonder where she's been all this time??

  • books

glad she's okay and there was no crime behind her disappearence.

  • Mr Mel

I imagined the worst also. It seems a miracle that she was rescued. I hope she gets the help she needs.

  • everyAframe

She's absolutely beautiful and depressed and I actually haven't dated her for 1-3 years! My life must be improving.

  • interlard

If it was an attempted suicide, I hope she takes hope from the fact that most of the city was looking for her and we're really pleased she's still with us. :-)

  • Offbalance

I was worried that it was going to end like this. Thankfully, she's physically okay and hopefully on her way to get the help she needs.
