Cyclists Demand Boycott of Williamsburg's Northside Car Service

091608northside.jpgNorthside Car Service, the dominant livery cab company in Williamsburg, has become the target of a boycott after an accident with a cyclist last week. In a widely circulated email, a friend of the unidentified cyclist—who himself called for a boycott in a Gothamist comment Friday—says that on September 10th the driver made an “irrationally fast turn” from Kent onto North Seventh, forcing the cyclist to "slam on the brakes, flip completely over the handlebars, and land under the hood of the car." (Under the hood?) The driver sped off, but the cyclist, who broke his elbow and collarbone, later met with Northside and received compensation for his medical expenses. His friend is not so easily placated, and tells Brooklyn Paper he wants to "make them accountable for the hit and run." Only time will tell if Northside will be able stay afloat without business from the cyclist demographic.

They are the worst. Use Metro instead: 718-388-1800. Cheaper as well.

In other words, the cyclist doesn't know how to handle the vehicle he is operating.

He brakes and falls over the handlebars?

Didn't they teach you how to ride a bike in Peoria before you came to the Big City of Williamsburg?

is the hasidic rabbi isaac abraham ruunig for councilmember for williamsburg ?

the ny post

Abraham later said another major concern is the safety of children, noting that cyclists "aren't obeying traffic laws. Green lights and red lights are the same

If he got compensation for his injuries privately from Northside, it seems kind of fishy to call for a continued boycott...
Java is another good one (718) 383-5600

@thefacts: Really? So, the guy driving the car wrecklessly DOES know how to handle the vehicle he's operating?

Peoria! Haha! That's a good one! hahaha

Wish I was so cool and native and clever and... funny!

When it comes to being a menace on wheels, the cyclists certainly give the cabbies a run for the money. I've had more near misses with reckless cyclists careening the wrong way down a street than with cabbies.

From the linked article:
"The Sept. 10 crash occurred on the same day that Jonathan Millstein, 50, was killed in Park Slope when he was run over by a school bus while cycling, and just four days after Alexander Toulouse, 8, was killed by a postal truck on his bike."

Therefore, please join me in boycotting the schools and the postal service.

The new crop of taxi drivers have brought their Karachi driving standards with them it seems.

"Only time will tell if Northside will be able stay afloat without business from the cyclist demographic."

was this remark really necessary?

yeh...wouldn't a cyclist just ride his bike anyway rather than taking a cab?

Something does need to be done about the conduct of taxi and livery cabs on city streets, but calling for a boycott of a single car service isn't the way to go, particularly when the demographic that is most likely to adhere to the boycott doesn't ride cabs to begin with. I'd like to see people refuse to tip if the driver improperly uses a bike lane, but that would still only be hitting the individual drivers, not the car services that encourage reckless driving by making cabbies almost entirely reliant on tips for income.
While anybody who places his earnings above my well-being is a dirtbag, the actions of certain reckless cabbies are at least explainable, though not excusable. If gratuity were built into fares, cabbies may actually feel an incentive to drive slowly and carefully, as such conduct would increase the fare and thus their tip. Though this presents ample opportunity for cabbies to gouge customers, at least they won't be goring cyclists.

This is hardly surprising, livery drivers are the WORST. They're the most reckless drivers on the road.

BTW, Arecibo is the best car service in the city, hands down.

JDS - thank you for that last sentence. I take back anything bad I've ever said about you.

"Only time will tell if Northside will be able stay afloat without business from the cyclist demographic"- hmmm. I see what you did there. You were making a joke that cyclists don't use livery cabs cause they cycle.

I love the fact that NYC cyclists rarely obey traffic laws, you see all these stupid girls (and guys) not wearing helmets and riding with flip-flops on
They think they are doing something good for the environment but in fact cause harm to our urban environment (anyway the millions that travel the greatest transportation system in the world lay claim to that title of helping the environment on their commute)
But then they expect everyone to support their causes when some tragedy happens
You cant have it both ways
End your hypocrisy and then you might get some rights in this city
cycling is a serious transport mode in the city be prepared and if you are not prepared you shouldn't bike.

in my experience, cyclists are not avid cab users so a cyclist boycott of taxis will probably not make much of an impact.

Yup Spirtross I couldnt agree more. I was driving down Dean st and there were 5 of them, and none stopped at the red light, few ever do, I rarely see them obey traffic laws, and therefore, cue the violin.

Yeah, I'll take my business to the livery cabs that stop after they run down a cyclist.

Spiritross, here's the thing:
I'm a cyclist who obeys EVERY traffic law that it makes sense for a cyclist to obey. I wear a helmet, have brakes, keep my cycle tuned-up, outfit it with lights at night etc... I never pull a salmon and ride upstream, nor do I run stop signs, ride on sidewalks or run red lights at any but the most abandoned intersections (any skilled cyclist knows that sometimes it's safest for everybody if you just mosey on through an intersection at a red light).
All of that said, in the past six months alone, I've been hit by two cars (breaking two ribs, suffering a concussion, several abrasions and two hyper-extended shoulders), spat on by jaywalkers, and nearly thrown from my bike as I tried to avoid a salmon who made a quick turn onto Avenue A. It seems that no degree of cycle safety affords you the attention of drivers or pedestrians. I'm constantly being told that cyclists get injured because they don't act like cars, but the fact is, nobody treats us with the same respect that they treat cars.

its because people driving cars dont wear those stupid little cycling caps.

Arecibo and Eastern are very good.

I'm sorry but this seems a bit too much. I am a cyclist too but this is not solving any problems--

Frist off, the reason the guy didn't stop is probabyl because 1.) he had a fare he had to get somewhere and 2.) he was prossibly an illegal who didn't want to deal with the cops. It's bad of him to drive off- but it seems that despite his bad judgement (made in the heat of the moment)- his company, Northside (who did nothing to be at fault for hitting him except hiring said driver), decided to step up and help pay for bills without any legal action at all??

I don't see what makes them ripe for a boycott. If anything it's the driver's issue. And all of this is beside the point that it sounds like technically the biker was at fault. Using the term "irrationally fast turn" sounds double-speak for "technically legal but I had to slam on my brakes and got hurt."

I do agree with a lot of what people are saying here. Many, many cyclists (particularly here in Greenpoint and Williamsburg) do not follow the laws of the road. If cyclists began following the laws a bit more, I think there'd be less accidents in general. I also think they'd be taken more seriously whenever things like this happen.

I ride a bike. I also drive. I am appalled by both groups on a regular basis. Many people drive entirely too fast (especially on Driggs along the strip near the parks, which is just fucking stupid given the number of kids and families around). There are also numerous times a day where cyclists are not only riding the wrong way (against traffic) but they are on both sides of the road riding the wrong way. And that's stupid as well. I have seen several pedestrians get hit by bikers who are going the wrong way. That's not cool either.

Everyone has a lot of law-abiding they must do if we ever want to move forward and make real change.

Cars: Slow the hell down and think of a bike as less traffic for you to have to deal with.

Bikers: You are to ride like you're driving a car. It's that simple.

When it comes to being a menace on wheels, the cyclists certainly give the cabbies a run for the money. I've had more near misses with reckless cyclists careening the wrong way down a street than with cabbies.
Except, of course, that if a cyclist were to run into you, you might come away with some bruises, and if a cabbie were to turn and not see you in the crosswalk, you'd be dead.

I almost hit a cyclist this weekend because he decided to roll through a red light while I was going through it. He didn't even try to speed up, just strolled through it and looked at me like I was at fault. Made my blood boil.

seperated bike lanes would solve all of this.

JMH: Straw man argument.

Rocknrope: that's the part that gets me riled up as well. I was parked on Driggs the other day outside Maxim. I was behind a big SUV so whatever was up ahead, wasn't really visible. (But since it's one way, that should matter, right?)

Anyway, I go to pull out because no one was coming from behind. And a biker shot out from behind the SUV going the wrong way down Driggs. I almost hit him. I was barely moving, but I almost hit him nonetheless. And he looked at me like it was my fault. I too was pissed off and never once have I ridden my bike that way. Moron.

Let's face it, everyone's at fault in this city, just as they're all accountable for their personal safety.

Cyclists shouldn't expect pedestrians to not jaywalk, just as Peds need to be on the lookout for both unsafe cars and cyclists.

I'm a cyclist. I commute to work on bike 3-4 days a week, take the subway other times and yellow cabs whenever necessary... Cyclists come in all shapes and colors in this city, and there's certainly a good percentage out there that keep their road privileges a little too close to their hearts just as there are many who don't give a damn about any of rules of the road. Both types aggravate me to no end when I'm making my way home.

That said, livery cabs are some of the worst drivers in the city (access-a-ride and delivery truck drivers are just as if not more dangerous). I'd stake my life riding around manhattan in a crowd of yellow taxis versus sharing an empty road with two or three livery cabs. But, honestly, being around livery cabs just makes me more cautious on my bike, it's something learned.

The boycott is stupid and ass-backwards. The bikers should have filed a crime report if they felt so justified about this boycott. Otherwise, this comes off as self-righteous.

I will make a point of using Northside now, even though I live closer to Metroline. I am so sick of this "bicyclist activism" bulls***t. How about ending poverty first??

"any skilled cyclist knows that sometimes it's safest for everybody if you just mosey on through an intersection at a red light"

What????????

MatukoNYC:
When it's late at night and there are no cars on the side that has the green and few pedestrians, you can create a safe distance between yourself and the cars idling at the light by carefully riding through the light. This gives everybody a bit more room to breathe.

Pedestrians also cross against the light - what horror!

Puhleeze, as we all know, automobiles routinely maim and kill New Yorkers year round. Whether it's cabs crashing into sidewalks full of pedestrians, 8-year olds crushed and killed in Brooklyn, teenage drivers hurtling off exits on the Grand Central Parkway, it's automobile drivers that kill dozens of New Yorkers each year. But it has become so routine, it often fails to make the news. But if a crane or construction debris falls...

Bicyclists kill no one. They annoy a few people - but better to be annoyed than dead.

But New Yorkers and Americans are inured to automobile carnage and chaos - as if it should be an accepted way-of-life in this country. Somehow Americans look the other way at the deaths of 40,000 people each year in this country due to auto-related accidents.

btw - traffic laws were introduced early last century to address automobile chaos - bicycles had been on the roads already for decades without the need for stop lights.

And don't forget that the drivers that run over and kill people are rarely charged with any kind of crime or violation in this city. Using an excuse ranging from "I didn't see anything" to "I had a bellyache" seems to be sufficient reason to be sent on your merry way by law enforcement.

Hey guys! I have two cents burning a hole in my pocket.

I think the bottom line is that some drivers are reckless and some cyclists are reckless. In NYC and everywhere else. A rational person can't possibly argue for or against a particular side of this issue because each side has its reckless individuals.

Why the snide tone to this article? A man was hurt badly by a reckless driver. It's really not that funny.

We should have seat belts installed on those crazy bikes. With a helmet and elbows and a seat belt and flashy lights you should be very safe to play in traffic.

most (not all) cyclist are elitist doucheclowns who piss me off all day.

just my 2 cents.
