Palin Apparently Against Polar Bears, Using Official E-mail

2008_09_polarbear.jpg

The NY Times article about the Republican vice presidential candidate's governing style begins, "Gov. Sarah Palin lives by the maxim that all politics is local, not to mention personal." It details how she hired many friends for state positions, turns against friends or supporters if they criticize her, and created an atmosphere of intense secrecy as governor.

Here are two excerpts from the lengthy Times article. First, a little something about Palin and polar bears:

Rick Steiner, a University of Alaska professor, sought the e-mail messages of state scientists who had examined the effect of global warming on polar bears. (Ms. Palin said the scientists had found no ill effects, and she has sued the federal government to block the listing of the bears as endangered.) An administration official told Mr. Steiner that his request would cost $468,784 to process.

When Mr. Steiner finally obtained the e-mail messages — through a federal records request — he discovered that state scientists had in fact agreed that the bears were in danger, records show.

“Their secrecy is off the charts,” Mr. Steiner said.

Then, there's Palin's habit of using her private e-mail address for state work:

While Ms. Palin took office promising a more open government, her administration has battled to keep information secret. Her inner circle discussed the benefit of using private e-mail addresses. An assistant told her it appeared that such e-mail messages sent to a private address on a “personal device” like a BlackBerry “would be confidential and not subject to subpoena.”

Ms. Palin and aides use their private e-mail addresses for state business. A campaign spokesman said the governor copied e-mail messages to her state account “when there was significant state business.”

On Feb. 7, Frank Bailey, a high-level aide, wrote to Ms. Palin’s state e-mail address to discuss appointments. Another aide fired back: “Frank, this is not the governor’s personal account.”

Mr. Bailey responded: “Whoops~!”

The Washington Post also examines Palin's mayoral legacy today, finding, "Palin limited her duties further by hiring a deputy administrator to handle much of the town's day-to-day management. Her top achievement as mayor was the construction of an ice rink, a project that landed in the courts and cost the city more than expected."

Palin herself said of mayoral position, "It's not rocket science. It's $6 million and 53 employees."

Sarah Pallin is so stupid, she thinks the 'Bush Doctrine' is a community service bulletin on feminine hygiene.

It doesn't matter WHAT they find on Palin. I know I as a woman and an American REFUSE to vote for her.

PALIN IS UNAMERICAN - She wanted to help Alaska Secede from the U.S.!

Palin tells the Alaskan Independence Party -- whose goal is a vote on seceding from the U.S.-- to ‘keep up the good work.’

And according to the AIP’s Web site founder of the party, Joe Volger said, “I’m an Alaskan, not an American. I’ve got no use for America or her damned institutions.”

Here is Palin's address of support at this Party's 2008 Convention!

I'm sorry. I don't know about YOU but I will not vote for someone who is ashamed to be a U.S. Citizen. She is Anti-American! I do not know how John McCain a war veteran and a POW would even associate with someone like her!

Yes, they're both flawed, but bad execution is different from bad intention—with good intention, you can work to improve execution. All the issues you raise are important to me and to every democrat I know. I'm sure you know very well that politics is messy, and legislation that starts out one way gets pushed and pulled and mutated by the time it comes out.

If you really think your ideal political party wouldn't have the same problems in execution, I think you don't understand the nature of a democracy composed of different people. The only political system that escapes compromise is a totalitarian one

I don't trust any reporting from the NYT.

  • Future Taliban

A naked Palin lying spread-out & face down on a polar bear fur might warrant my vote.

  • nik13

Cliff-notes please??? Still waiting for NYT to cross Hudson & expose local NJ politics. Never-mind that NYT endorsed sexually-confused Jim McGreevey, with same zeal they embraced hooker- trolling Elliott Spitzer for governorships. Both paragons of honest public servants.

Oops, they're members of "their" party/tribe.

Meanwhile, I would like to see Obamessiah's real birth certificate, his school & medical records, find out more about his relation with domestic terrorist Ayers, real-estate swindler Rezko & "reverend" Wright.

The reason she doesn't want protection for the Polar Bears is because she wants to shoot them?

    It's like a bad dream.

Even Dubya doesn't buy into the 'world is 6500 years old' and 'dinosaurs were around in Biblical Times' crap. She's like the offspring of Phyllis Schlafly and James Watt after a botched sex-change operation. Pre-op, she was a ditzy, off-circuit beauty pageant tart, post-op, she wants to drill polar bears. She totally needs to go hunting with Dick Cheney.

Money talks. If you what to know who runs our country - it's the corportations and lobbyists who have no end to their money supply to get politicians to help them out.

    @11

Since the 1980's both political parties have created policies that have had a negative impact on everyone but the extremely wealthy. NYC has gotten increasingly harder for everyone but the super rich to survive in, and standards of living have declined quite a bit. Cops, teachers and fireman can barely afford to teach and live the five boroughs. Vast frauds have occurred under both parties. Both parties are completely beholden to big business and the financial markets, and have very similar policies that let corporations do whatever they feel is necessary to make a buck. Lehman collapse in 3-2-1... I think both McCain and Obama will continue with similar policies that benefit corporations at the expense of average people.

If Al Gore could have done all those wonderful things you speculate why couldn't he challenge what was an obviously rigged election?

I refuse to entertain the idea that the elections and candidates are honest, and that this isn't mainly about the media dog and pony show. Either candidate, we're on a slow skid to second world status.

  • Amanda Harletsch

Anybody that fails to see how the republican are responsible for the state of affairs (economy, education, International affairs in the biggest shithole ever) is a moron. The same morons that picked bush! Mavericks of idiocy!

  • virgil

    Wow, emilydickinson,

We're all so naive. How anyone could be so dumb as to think that Gore would have handled Iraq, Afghanistan, 9/11, global warming, tax cuts, the mortgage crisis, energy policy, Katrina, deregulation, etc. any differently than Bush?

Only a fool would look at their differences in policies and records and glean any information from that. Why, they're as alike as two peas in a pod!

Thank god for your world-weary brilliance.

  • emilydickinson

I think we should admit that the actual election is a complete fraud, and there's very little difference between McCain, Obama or anyone else for that matter, other than varying degrees of bible thumping and saber rattling.

The whole 'election' process is just a giant media play. Honestly, if you step back from the election 'coverage' for a second and just look at what people on both sides are saying it's pretty clear concrete issues and practical approaches to problem solving are non existent from both candidates.

The election coverage is a step up from Perez Hilton at this point, but in some ways it's worse because journalists should really put the screws to these jokers. But they don't, and they won't and these shenanigans will continue.

  • cucarachita

She's Bush with tits, kids. She's just like W.

And as for that article, let's not forget the 66K a year babysitter!

  • VanessaNYC

Am I crazy to think that having someone with this many negatives ... will get undecided voters... to vote for Obama?

    No, you're not crazy.

  • babyhitler

#6 - republicans voted for bush TWICE!!!! if that is the definitive description of a moron then what is?
