In a scene described as "total destruction," a rush hour commuter train in Los Angeles carrying 225 passengers collided head on with a Union Pacific freight train. As of the latest update, 15 people are confirmed dead and 135 injured (45 critically) as rescue teams worked into the night. "They are in there removing dead bodies that are lying on top of survivors," Fire Captain John Virant said. Currently there is no word on the circumstances that allowed the accident to occur. LAist has extensive ongoing coverage of the accident and its fallout, including photos from the scene.

That's horrifying, and I didn't even know that LA had commuter railways. Great coverage though. Hats off to Zach Behrens for the on-scene photography.
Whats amazing is that the exact same thing happened almost a year ago involving the same train company and a freight train. What the hell...
Incredibly horrible and gruesome. Those poor commuters all knew each other from many months and years riding together and they had to watch their friends get badly injured or die. It was a missed signal that resulted in the head-on collision, but if that wasn't bad enough, the engine from the Metrolink train pushed back and telescoped into the first car. These are the worst imaginable train wrecks and I feel just as terrible for those first responders that had to clear that scene. they will be haunted by this for the rest of their lives.
