Yankees Ready to Whimper out of Yankee Stadium

2008_09_yankeestadium.jpgWhen the first-place Rays and fourth-place Yankees open a three-game series at Yankee Stadium tonight -- weather permitting -- it will mark the final time the team starts a homestand in the old ballpark. A venue that has seen more dramatic moments than any other will be closed with a whimper after 10 more games. The Yankees sit 8 1/2 games out of a wild-card berth, and their "tragic number" -- the number of combined losses by them or wins by the Red Sox that will eliminate them from the postsesaon -- is nine.

Thirteen straight trips to the postseason or not, the Yankees will bid farewell to their ballpark a week from Sunday against Baltimore. Sure, the team is going out in a lame way. But the stadium's history is enough to make the last games enjoyable. With the playoffs out of the question (Baseball Prospectus says the team has a .09 percent chance), fans can celebrate the 85 years of history rather than fret over the result of the last games. In some ways, ending it this way is better than hanging in limbo only to miss a playoff spot in the season's final moments.

If you don't have tickets to the final games, you can try looking on StubHub.

Of course this has nothing to do with Joe Torre not being there.

How is it possible that Yankee Stadium is not land marked? There are so many other structures in the city most people have never heard of and have a small fraction of the stadium's history that are land marked.

Let the curse of the Babe begin.

It was probably remodeled so much in '76 that it no longer qualifies for landmark status.

A fun place to visit, but I won't miss crowded walkways, cruddy bathrooms and uncomfortable seats. I also won't pay big $ next year to see the Yanks. I'll just have to depend on the kindness of business associates.

Knock the damn thing down. Yankees suck

Great Yankees have a new place to suck in!

Mr. Mel, the Yankees would (and did) suck as much if Torre were still manager. Fire Girardi. Fire Cashman. Dump every player with and expiring contract. Trade any player without a no-trade clause. Use the spare cash to buy the entire Tampa Bay Rays team.

I hear ya famdoc, and let 'em make Willie Randolph the manager.

I agree with the landmark commenter...YS should be an American landmark whose history and significance in American Sports entertainment should be leveraged by the local politicians to put the south Bronx in the map for those visiting the city. It should be turned into a Yankees museum!
