Traffic agents wrote nearly 700 summonses on Wednesday as part of the city's crackdown on drivers who block the intersection during heavy traffic. But despite the increased enforcement of the city's box-blocking law— which is now punishable by a $115 fine—New York's boxes are still all blocked up! The Post sent a reporter to hang out at the intersection of West 54th Street and Broadway yesterday, where traffic agents were not handing out tickets. There the reporter counted 29 cars blocking the box over the course of an hour. But box block at your own risk; over at West 36th Street and Ninth Avenue the NYPD says they handed out 20 summonses an hour to drivers with a penchant for box blocking.

pulease, the drivers aren't committing any great crime...try not moving into an intersection for a few lights cause of traffic and watch what the drivers behind you will do to you...plus sometomes people turning will fill up the avenue so that you'll never have space to move ....its not some black and white..those dasterdly drivers type of issue.
Yes, New York drivers are very thoughtful and considerate.
I'd ticket the hell out of them... and of many others too...
Its easy money. Its about time. Send some troops down to Spring and Varick.
Now if they'd only start ticketing people for honking when there isn't an emergency...
i hate when i'm trying to talk to some girl & some other guy gets in the conversation.
oh wait...this story is about box blocking?
my bad.
carry on.
is this not congestion pricing? albany, you've done it again!
they also need to start ticketing jaywalkers as well especially the ones the walk in front of cars going 90mphs down the street.
Should ticket all the douchebag cyclists, too.
Ticket the air breathers.. Their carbon footprints are wreaking havoc to the environment
I second the motion to get some of those lazy illegal immigrants down at the intersection of Spring and Varick and all the way up to Clarkson. Pieces of dung that they are.
I agree with (4). I work over the intersection of Spring and Varick and it's horrible every day (except when they have traffic cops there writing tickets). People just drive right out into the middle of the intersection and sit there for the duration of the red light. Between that and the people driving down Spring in the left lane and then trying to make a right at the intersection to get into the tunnel the whole intersection is a nightmare.
They'll never convince drivers to stop with a paltry $115 fine. Up it to $1000 on the first offense and increasing geometrically from there then you'll put some fear in their wallets and get their attention. Better yet, confiscate the car on the third offense. If they haven't learned by the third time they're ticketed, they probably never will.
Would be nice if the entire intersecion could be rigged with a devise that instantly pulverizes any car that is blocking the box, that's something I'd like to see..
