THEATER: Frustrated musical theater composer Jacob Sterling knows exactly why his glorious musical adaptation of Private Benjamin never saw the light of day: Simply put, his career was undermined by AIDS and the British takeover of the American musical theater. David Pittu, a Tony nominee for his febrile performance in last season's Is He Dead, stars as Sterling in this absurd satire of a self-absorbed talentless hack, called What’s That Smell: The Music of Jacob Sterling. Taking place during Sterling's cringe-worthy appearance on a cable talk show ("Composers and Lyricists of Tomorrow," or CLOT), the comedy received a rave review from Charles Isherwood at the Times today: "For connoisseurs of atrocious musical theater — and/or whip-smart satire — the fictional Jacob Sterling is a godsend to be eternally grateful for." – John Del Signore
