Equus Playwright Says Stop Thinking About Naked Radcliffe!

091108quus.jpgThat Broadway revival of Equus that's packing them in at the Broadhurst (93% attendance, giddyup!) has been getting a lot of press, much of it focused on Daniel Radcliffe's frenzied nude scene, in which [spoiler?] he runs amok and blinds some horses. Michael Riedel at the Post has dubbed the show's big attraction "Harry Potter's other wand" ha ha, but at least one person is not amused by the quip: Equus's author Peter Shaffer, who tells the columnist, "How very naughty of you. There is a great deal more going on in the play, you know. I'm not writing porn, for God's sake! I was irritated that people talked on and on about it. It was so infantile." He's absolutely right! So let's have no immature comments about these NSFW cell phone photos of Radcliffe's penis taken by an Equus audience member the other night.

If they didn't want people to focus on Radcliffe's wand, then they shouldn't have cast him. That's what happens when you stunt cast.

I agree with Peter Sahaffer. People aren't respecting Dan as an Actor. The press has made so much of this and to the person who took the photos and posted them on line. They are nothing but cockroachers who I guess thought they had a right to post. Hopefully that person will be found out and severly repramanded.
Dan wants to be thought of as a serious actor. Not as Harry Potter for the rest of his life. 3 years ago I and some friends got to meet Dan and he was such a sweet person. We all felt comfortable around each other. We aren't into screaming so he was happy to talk to us. He's such a sweetheart.

I saw it last night and was blown away. The HP movies in no way reflect Radcliffe's talent since too much of the books have had to be crammed into them.

If they hadn't cast Daniel Radcliffe, no one but serious theater people would have gone to see this revival. I saw DR speak at that NY Times Talks thing a couple of weeks ago where he said (and I agree) that a lot of people who probably would never go to see live theater are going because of him. He's hopeful that they'll enjoy it enough to take in other shows as well. Who knows. ^_~

there's a naked girl in this play?

this play is relevant to my interests.

It's a STUNNING casting, Daniel Radcliffe is absolutely brilliant in this play. People on theater forums are asking for a Tony for him and they are calling this play: "the best straight play Broadway has seen in years". Do you know how difficult is to satify theater fans? The acting, lighting, sound, design, direction... everything is wonderful, it has humor, powerful scenes, darker parts, intelligent speechs, awesome choreographies... so that's why it surprises people who really know what this play is about the fact the media only talk about nudity. Radcliffe has the right to play a role without people making a fuss about it over and over, it's senseless to say "don't cast him then", he does an amazing work with it. What I say is: if someone has a problem with it: don't see it! The problem is it seems to ask this society to search a little deeper instead of just looking the superficial is asking for too much. And I agree the HP movies makers don't use all the talent this young actor has, not even half of it.

I guess you could call that a dick.

I’m amazed at all the fuss, and that the author of this moving and powerful script feels like he has to publicly defend himself. I’ve been an artist’s model for more than 15 years and know exactly what it is to “take off my kit”. It’s nothing like people obsess about- there’s nothing sexy about it. Dancing Argentine Tango is far more sensuous fully clothed! It seems to be unimaginable to people who are not involved in creating art, but as a dancer who lives in her body as sculpture, it’s a small step. Those hung up on the nudity in this play should see Bill T Long’s concert where he addresses the barriers that separate us as humans, 1st race, then religion, gender, age, relationships, and down the line until the last piece there are dancers filling the stage walking in lines nude. In the audience, I felt the vulnerability and purity of those barriers gone and self conscious that I was clothed. It was an experience I’ll never forget. It’s not the type nudity we’ve come to expect in films. A little sophistication goes a long way- give it a go!
