Nelson Figueroa allowed two inherited runners to score, but, after that, the relievers allowed only one run in 5 2/3 innings. Not too shabby. Joe Smith got the win with 1 2/3 scoreless innings, and Luis Ayala got the save. Brothers Carlos joined in on the act again, with Delgado adding two homers and Beltran poking one out. Jose Reyes -- a more deserving MVP candidate than Delgado, by the way -- got two hits to help extraicate himself from a brief September malaise. To make the night sweeter, the Marlins beat the Phillies by an identical score. The Mets now lead the National League East by 2 1/2 games.
- Yankees 7, Angels 1: Alfredo Aceves won his first big-league start, and he got plenty of help from the offense. Johnny Damon hit two homers and Alex Rodriguez added another. Derek Jeter also went 2-for-4. Jeter's first hit moved him past Babe Ruth into second place on the Yankees' all-time hit list. Up next: Lou Gehrig. At 25, Aceves is old to be making his first career start, so don't expect big things from him as a starter. He got the nod in lieu of Darrell Rasner, who hadn't been up to snuff since a quick start. The Yankees and Angels close their series with a Wednesday matinée.
