The Disappearing Face of Brooklyn Storefronts

Opening up tonight at the Brooklyn Historical Society is the new exhibit, "The Disappearing Face of Brooklyn's Storefronts." Photographer-curators James and Karla Murray have scoured Brooklyn to observe "mom and pop" businesses from humble neighborhood stores tucked away on narrow side streets to well-known institutions on historic avenues. The Murrays have published two bestselling books on the graffiti scene and now turn their eye to some of the last commercial relics in Brooklyn's rapidly changing streets.

The opening reception is tonight from 5:30-7:30. The exhibit runs at the Brooklyn Historical Society through December 28th.

#6, Didn't say anything against the people. Those storefronts just look so dirty, especially Katy's. I'm always in favor of preserving old buildings and keeping vintage signage intact, but they could clean up a little. No I don't like Brooklyn and only go there when I have to. It's never what it's cracked up to be.

Lenny's Pizza also has a nice 70s sign.

I also dig the old Delicatessen sign on 5th Avenue and the Garry Jewelers.

    @ #1. WTF?

@ Edibitchie: get away from your computer and out of the house a bit more often. You might learn something walking the streets and meeting the people who own these stores.

Just came back from the show and its a perfect exhibit! Both James and Karla were on hand and they are great people (who shoot film!!!). This body of work is a small part of what they do, and its a welcome addition to the tradition of photography that documents this city's wonderful history.

If you don't like Brooklyn, stay the fuggout!
