Scared of Palin, Ed Koch Backs Obama

2008_09_edkoch.jpgFormer NYC mayor Ed Koch, who supported George W. Bush in 2004 and Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign, has announced he's endorsing for Barack Obama. He told NY1, "Protecting and defending the U.S. means more than defending us from foreign attacks. It includes defending the public with respect to their civil rights, civil liberties and other needs." Politico's Ben Smith asked Koch why Obama, and the 83-year-old said, "Any time someone goes to the library and says, 'I want to ban books,' and the librarian says 'no,' and she threatens to fire them -- that's scary." (Smith adds that the McCain-Palin camp says the VP candidate was just posing a "rhetorical question"). Koch also said he'd be happy to campaign for Obama.

Koch is scared of Sarah Palin, I'm scared of Joseph Biden. According to Israeli army radio Biden said that "Israel will have to reconcile itself with the nuclearization of Iran" because the U.S. doesn't want to get involved. According to other reports Biden held a fund raiser in the California home of a pro-Iranian lobbyist and said that "Iran always wanted to be an ally of the United States and to have good relations with the U.S. A.. Sarah Palin on the other hand has said that Iran must not get the bomb and that we should not interfere if Israel decides to destroy Iran's nuclear bomb factories. The only people who need fear Sarah Palin are the Mullahs running Iran.

    What a schmuck...

I will say this for Ed Koch. I remember a story about him at an exhibit at the old Columbus Circle Coliseum. One of the exhibitors had, as a publicity stunt, a lion being held on a leash by a model. When Koch approached the lion, one of the reporters accompanying him asked him to pet the beast. The Mayor refused and the reporter said to him "don't tell me the Mayor is a coward" and Koch answered "no, the Mayor is not a coward, nor is the Mayor a schmuck."

At times, he could be fun.

One of my favorite (badly paraphrased) Ed Koch quotes: "Mayors don't do the World Trade Center, God does the world Trade Center. Mayors do sewers."

  • Mr Mel

I think we've all had enough of Ed Koch. A bush supporter and real estate industry flack. Enjoy your dotage.

I usually forgive Chungisms, but this one makes my head hurt.

Ed Koch for mayor! The term limits law only prohibits more than two consecutive terms.

what is with the republican trolls here?

spearchucker, c00n, al sharpton, etc. were so much better trolls.

  • NannyState

Abe Beame was Mayor during the "Taxi Driver" years. Ed Koch was the guy who started the gentrification ball rolling. During his tenure, NYC went from "The Warriors" to "Working Girl"(with a little "Turk 182" in between). And the most important Gracie Mansion was an East Village art impressario.

  • JacqueMehoff

    Koch is one tough Jew.

    He's quite tall in person.

  • whitecastlerock

With Frank Perdue in his corner, Obama will win in a landslide...

  • Gothamist_Cynic

Republicans like Palin are too busy banning Harry Potter and D&D books.

  • lanciano

i'm glad someone has said publicly that palin is scary. i only wish it was a republican.

anyone who says that the plan for the war in Iraq is "god's plan" and who tells an audience to "pray" for natural gas pipeline (!) should not be a heartbeat away from the presidency.

    That is EXTREMELY SCARY.

  • spreetaper

    how about you rephrase that

the worst mayor you know of

try Jimmy Walker he actually resigned in the 1920's

the most interesting part of former mayors is to note we have had mayors by the names of

    Hugh Grant and David Matthews

  • sinisterteashop

GOP, you are going to have to do better than that. Try something more like, well you people have been enforcing the Theory of Evolution for eighty years now in public schools. We just want equal time for our points of view. That'll appeal to our common sense Democratic, see...

  • GOP

Why aren't there playboy issues in the library? Fuck, the government is banning KNOWLEDGE from the reading public! OH NO!

  • babyhitler

#4 - He wasn't mayor when Taxi Driver wass made but NY was just like that still under his tenure.

  • mfib

GOP's strained attempts at trolling are painful.

Babyhitler thinks that was a stretch.

  • Future Taliban

I'm surrounded by idiots. Until 2 weeks ago nobody even knew who this Palin c*nt was. Now just because she's semi-pretty everyone's excited about her despite totally ignoring her track record and viewpoints.

Proof positive that American voters are IDIOTS.

Which is why your economy is COLLAPSING before your very eyes yet you remain CLUELESS.

  • Mike B.

Koch also said he'd be happy to campaign for Obama.

In Florida, please. Don't say a goddamned word anywhere else. I've been happy pretending you don't exist.

What if the subject or viewpoint appealed to the prurient interest? Would it be okay to ban?

Wow, you actually think that's a persuasive argument. God your party sucks balls.

  • GOP

Koch NY was bad. Dinkins didn't improve it. Then came Guiliani.

Banning books ain't bad. What if the subject or viewpoint appealed to the prurient interest? Would it be okay to ban? Banning books per se ain't bad.

  • jackdonaghy

#3, that's pre-Koch NYC. Read "Ladies and Gentleman, the Bronx is Burning" for a better idea on the culture in the mid to late 1970s.

That said, is Koch still relevant? Does he have creditability after his 2004 endorsement? More importantly, will he make a cameo in the new Ghostbusters?

  • dr zippy

Nice try babyh, but Taxi Driver was made and released before Koch was mayor.

  • babyhitler

Koch is the worst mayor NYC ever had. Watch Scorcese's TAXI DRIVER. That's how shitty living in NY was during the Koch Years.

  • fugothamist

    'bout time

he veered off to the right for far too long

  • allthewine

    Koch is the man.
