Was Missing Teacher on Apple Store Surveillance Tape?

2008_09_hupp.jpgWNBC reports that Hannah Upp, the 23-year-old school teacher last seen on August 29th (leaving her keys, phone, wallet, and ID in her apartment), "was reportedly spotted checking her e-mail" at the Apple Store on Fifth Avenue. According to WNBC, "members of Upp's family screened the tape and confirmed it was her," and police are also checking to see if Upp did access her e-mail. Police had not suspected Upp was the victim of foul play, because she may have been unhappy with her job. America's Most Wanted is now involved and there's currently a $12,000 reward for information about her whereabouts.

Very sad. As an NYC school teacher, there are days where you want to run away from some of the students at these schools. I've seen these places suck the life right out of some of the best educators the country has to offer. Best of luck with the rescue efforts.

maybe she doesn't want to be found.

Shes hawt. Its going to be is another case of missing white woman syndrome.

i hope they find her and not to make a joke about this—so many young men and women who leave home "without a trace"—maybe she's in union square with a cat and a cardboard sign.

She obviously doesn't want to be found. Stop looking.

If by chance she is found, they should give her a kick in the ass for wasting all the resources that could have been spent finding real missing people.

If you read some of the articles, you will note that she pulled a similar stunt last year.

So I'm not spending any more of my time on this specific case.

There are plenty of people who go missing every week without the benefit of the publicity that Ms. Upp has received.

@wowthatsucks: Just because there wasn't a gruesome ending here doesn't mean that the search for Hannah was a waste. Not all missing person cases need to end in a crime.

This is not a missing woman case, more like a confused woman case. IF she was spotted checking her email, then she is not missing. But I do find it funny that she came out of hiding to check her email and probably her myspace and facebook page. After that, back to hiding or running away. But believe you me, she'll be back there again, you know young girls today can't go to long without checking email or myspace.

But another issue I have is what in the world is a 23 year old doing being a school teacher. What life experience has she gained in her short life for her to teach others. When I was in school most of my teachers were 40+. If she has a myspace or facebook page she is not ready to be a teacher. And you wonder why there is so much student/teacher sex in today's schools, young women teachers around horny young boys, do the math.

runaway bride syndrome. if I recall she did it a second time.

On what day was she caught on tape checking her email? Before or after her reported disappearance?

If she was spotted before she disappeared, Then who saw her in the Apple Store? Did that person know she was missing? If so who was notified? I hope she's ok, this is not one of those 5AM club scene tragedies.

@ RoDogg

She does seem young, at 23, to be a school teacher. But I don't see anything wrong with teachers having Facebook. Many of my former high school teachers now have a Facebook.

@nycviabos
She was caught doing that today.

I'm surprised no one has found this, Google her and you will see she is a Freegan!

Maybe that can be used to help find her but it also says a lot about her ability to pick up and leave everything behind.

@ gossipgirl

Blogs, yes. But it would seem funny to see a teacher at her desk checking her myspace while the students are doing their assigned lesson. Usually most teachers have blogs for talking and socializing with students and other teachers. Teacherlingo.com is a great site for teachers, not myspace.

@RoDogg:

Not every school district is fortunate to have established, veteran teachers. Hannah is an NYC teaching fellow -- in exchange for teaching in a high-need subject area in an inner city school, the program subsidizes her master's degree.

Also, I don't think having merely having a Facebook account means that she's not ready to be a teacher -- it's a content issue.

If she was in fact there checking her email, she should at least shoot a note to her mom or a friend saying "hey, I'm fine, call off the search."

As for having a facebook page, she can make it private. The issue teachers run into is being "friends" with their students (inappropriate) and not using the privacy settings which they should.

As for her age, many, many of my friends are teachers and they all started out teaching straight out of college. It's not like they woke up one day in their 40s and decided to do it.

Are you kidding me? There are a lot of 23 year old teachers and some 22. It's not necessarily that you are imparting life knowledge, but you have the capability of teaching a subject to students and often younger teachers have the advantage. I feel like I often relate better to my students because I am younger. On the risk of sounding a little pretentious, I feel like as an at risk youth who grew up to go to an Ivy League University, I do have something important to tell these kids even though I am in my mid 20's.
Trust me, some of the 40 year old teachers have gone batty over the years too...

Younger teachers in some cases are better than older ones. I had some teachers in their 40s and 50s and even some about to retire who showed they were bored with teaching.

why is it hard to believe that at age 23 she's a fellow or a teacher? many people graduate college at 20 or 21 leaving 1-2 years for a masters and then guess what? teaching!

i had teachers with tenure that were dumb and young spring chickens that ran circles around them...

...of course that was gym class, but still! ;P

As one of the 100 to 200 first-year NYC Teaching Fellows waiting for a full-time job in the "Teacher Reserve" because of budget-cuts and poor foresight on the Teaching Fellow's part, I can say, "Don't do it!" Several of us moved across the country, or depleted our savings to live off the stipend this summer, and now there are no jobs for us. We get kicked out December 5th if we haven't found anything.

I feel like running away myself, but only if there's a job waiting for me at the other end. ;)

Hey, TJ - can you post links to some of these articles? I'm curious.

I had her pegged for a suicide, but it could be that she simply had a breakdown of some kind and needs help, but doesn't want to ask for it.

@ offbalance:

I'm pretty sure I read it in one of the tabloids, but this was in the wnbc.com article:

Police sources doubted that she was the victim of foul play and noted that she had also dropped out of sight briefly last semester and may have been dissatisfied with her job.

Let me try to link as well:

Katie Holmes went missing?!?!?

Well, I just hope she's okay. I had many fantasies of running away from my life when I was a 23-year-old teacher. This seems like a technophile's version of Into the Wild.

#23...be careful what you wish for! I too was a teaching fellow back in 2001 and nothing has changed. They promise support and then throw you to the wolves. Get your resume together and start applying elsewhere while you can. Check out DCAS and see if you qualify for other city jobs and/or civil service exams. Check out the Mayoral Scholarships when you are employed with the city for your Masters.

And to the young woman missing....call your family! There's life after the NYC Teaching Fellows!

Remembering an email address is an indication that she may be in recovery. Other comments are correct that this may be a runaway bride scenario.

Being a Freegan she has the ability to eat but where could she live free?

If she continues to recover she may eventually return on her on or walk into a police station for help.

The previous episode and disappearance might have been caused by Subliminal Distraction too. Victims do not realize anything is wrong. They believe their actions are part of their normal thought process rather than an ongoing dissociative break and fugue state.
