Wow, this is refreshing to see people "discussing" politics in a calm manner without having to resort to name calling and insults.

I agree with most of you in that Palin will not really bring any of the Hillary Clinton supporters to their side, but she most definitively has energized the base that was not too happy to have McCain as their candidate.

My problem here is this: The Evangelicals would have condemned any other woman who had a daughter pregnant and not married at the age of 17. I personally do not care or hold it against Sarah Palin. But it has struck me as hypocritical that they have not said a word bout it. Actually I have seen evangelicals come out and say "Even conservatives make mistakes". I think that's wonderful, because it's true but if this would have been Obama's daughter, they would have "killed" her and would have said "He has no morals.

Am I the only one who is having this problem?
Thank you guys for a wonderful discussion.

To assume that just because Palins is on the ticket means that Hillary supporters will vote for her is ridiculous. They stand on completely opposite sides of most issues, and I don't see women just blindly following some pitbull with lipstick. By the way pitbulls also shit on the rug and lick their own balls, Sarah??

Yup. I love caller ID, especially on my cell. If I don't recognize the number, I'm not answering. And too bad if it's one of my credit card companies trying to offer me more services.

Everyone seems to praise Palins speech at the RNC, but dont you realize that she did NOT write her own speech, she just read the teleprompter. Sure she is an eloquent speaker....and she knows how to point that finger. Im all for a women being in a high office.....but Vice President of the U.S........I dont think she has the qualifications if something would happen to John McCain (heaven forbid)....from the background information that has been uncovered, it appears that while in office in Alaska, she wanted to fire anyone that didnt agree with her line of thinking. There was the office head that would not fire her sisters husband; then there was the librarian that wouldnt pull the books off the shelf that she thought were offensive....too me this amounts to "abuse of power"....against anyone that didnt agree with her. Do you actually want someone like that in the Vice Presidents position. I think she has a great family and seems to be a wonderful mother, but there are things about her while she held office in Alaska that just dont seem to justify my putting trust in her in the office of running our country. I just wish that McCain had picked someone like Tom Ridge, or the other lady governor (I believe she was from Kansas). Both of them I feel would be better qualified to take over if anything happend to the "big boss". Also I just dont think I can agree with her stance on "no abortions" for ANY REASON. I dont agree with abortions, but being a female I do feel that if I were raped I should be allowed to decide on my own whether I wanted to keep the child or not. I dont believe that the government should dictate that choice to me. Please dont take this as any disrespect meant to Sarah Palin, this is just my own opinion. One more thing that has been brought up about her that I dont like is the fact that she states she is an avid hunter.....but she doesnt mention that she likes to hunt "from a plane"...to me that is not "hunting"....I dont understand how anyone could hunt and kill any animals from the "air" like that. I guess you can tell I am an "animal lover"....and I believe that real hunting is "from and on the ground" while tracking the animals, not a "free-for-all from a plane" flying above them. Again, this is just my opinon. Again, no disrespect meant to Sarah Palin. Thank goodness we live in America where at the present time "free speech" and ideas are still allowed....for now that is.

Oh, and by the way, the reason I know about people who answer their phones is because I worked in a telemarketing center during a bad spell, and nearly everyone I talked to was some pathetic (and I use that word in the compassionate sense), lonely, desperate, home-bound old person. (Or some idiot who doesn't know when not to answer their phone.)

The only people answering their home phones are old folks.
That said, old folks vote. So young people, you better get your asses out and vote if you want to outnumber the antiques who will be trying to decide your future!

Also, people like to "like" someone who acts outrageously. Palin is something of a Wild and Crazy Gal, shooting off her mouth and her gun and all that. So people admire that. That doesn't mean they will vote for her.

I'd like to remind people about France 2002, when people "liked" Le Pen of the National Front enough to vote for him in the first heat of the primaries, and then were shocked and appalled that he came in second. Everyone was like, "We didn't mean it!"
They didn't let that happen again, and even those who voted for him in the first heat, didn't vote for him again. Nobody actually WANTED the fascist neo-nazi that close to the presidency. But they liked to like him for his big fat obscene mouth.

Since we won't have a second chance here, I'd advise us all not to take McCain/Palin lightly.

How can Palins ratings be higher than anyone elses? Nobody had even heard of her last until last week. All you people that say she is just like us,is the same thing you said about Bush, Someone to sit down with and have a beer with, a hockey mom, a tough talker with no substance. America has had enough of the good ole boy, (or girl) undereducated leaders, it would be nice to have someone in office with common sense and intelligence for a change. That leaves Palin/McCain out! You want a breath of fresh air go on a camping trip.

A poll released a couple days ago found Palin's "favorable" rating to be higher than both McCain and Obama.

Polls tend to rely upon landlines. Most people below a certain age have ditched landlines in favor of cell phones only. These voters are also overwhelmingly in favor of Obama.

The problem is: Will they actually vote?

Yes, thank you for that basic lesson in the electoral college Vanessa, I'm well aware. Nonetheless, the electoral college renders ours (NYC) votes meaningless whereas in the middle of the country, every vote counts. The Obama campaign needs to get people out voting there, and they don't seem to be concentrating on it. I certainly hope the current results are correct and will stay that way till the election - I check electoral-vote.com every day.

[6] Maybe 58% have a favorable opinion of Palin because most people don't know much about her. It'll be interesting to see how that changes over the next couple of months, especially after the VP debates. There are also quite a few people who say that they like her, but wouldn't want her as VP.

Nicemarmot,

I know that most of middle America will vote McCain, but the electoral votes are not equally across all of the states. As of September 6 (following the RNC convention) Electoral-Vote.com has Obama ahead of McCain by a lot.

What people in NYC don't understand is that we don't decide the election. Our votes are essentially meaningless because of the Electoral College. The people in the Bible Belt midwest, where I grew up - they decide the election. And Palin is their goddess, I kid you not. I wasn't worried before but now I'm terrified.

Also, Maureen Dowd is an idiot.

people watched the GOP cause if they are going to vote for a black guy they better see the alternative. That being said, after they saw the GOP thing I'm pretty sure everyone would vote for the black guy. Palin really just fired up her base, just like Obama fired up his base. The real fight was for the independents and undecideds. I think Obama caught more of those. This, plus the fact that the democrats have 4 MILLION new registered voters, a galvanazed and voracious youth vote, and a even bigger warchest from private donations that pretty much lap 4 times the amount that McCain spells trouble for McCain. Right Now, Obama would win, after the debates Obama would win. The thing is, what dastardly thing does Karl Rove and the GOP mud machine have left? they might bring in Reverend Wright at the last second going batshit crazy with Obama and it could be over. It's like Lolo Jones in the 100m Hurdles at the beijing olympics. She was winning and in the lead with 9 hurdles and tripped up on the very last one and didn't medal. So will Obama be Lolo Jones or Usain Bolt?

Whaaaaaaaaat?????!!! Where did you read that?! I think you are mistaken. The tv ratings for Sarah Palin's speech beat Obama, but that doesn't mean people like her. I watched and I'm an Obama supporter. People watched Palin just like people watch car wrecks or the Jerry Springer Show.

I think the Clinton appearance in Florida was arranged before Palin was announced as VP, but, yes, the fact that McCain has a woman on his ticket does make things tricky. That said, I can't imagine that Hillary devotees would instantly throw their support behind Palin--their views are pretty different on social issues. If anything, I think Palin just helped McCain shore up his conservative base.
