McCain Officially Nominated, But Palin Steals the Show

Senator John McCain was officially nominated as the presidential candidate of the Republican party last night, but his running mate Sarah Palin took the convention hall by storm. The Governor of Alaska addressed the crowd and energized them by introducing herself and her family--and aggressively attacking Barack Obama:

Before I became governor of the great state of Alaska, I was mayor of my hometown. And since our opponents in this presidential election seem to look down on that experience, let me explain to them what the job involves. I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a ‘community organizer,’ except that you have actual responsibilities.

...We tend to prefer candidates who don't talk about us one way in Scranton and another way in San Francisco.

She also slammed the media, stressed off-shore drilling, and spoke to McCain's experience. Here's a transcript and video is below.

Former NYC mayor Rudy Giuliani also "brought delegates to their feet repeatedly" with his pointed attacks on Obama. He said, “Barack Obama has never led anything. Nothing. Nada. So, our opponents want to reframe the debate. They would have you believe that this election is about ‘change versus more of the same.’ But that’s really a false choice. Because ‘change’ is not a destination ... just as ‘hope’ is not a strategy.”

Giuliani also boldly referred to disgraced former police commissioner Bernard Kerik, when recalling September 11, 2001, "Without really thinking, based on just emotion, spontaneous, I grabbed the arm of then-Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik, and I said to him, ‘Bernie, thank God George Bush is our president.’” Here's a transcript and video is below.

Democrats fired back, with strategists calling her speech "snide" and noted a lack of ideas about the economy. Obama's spokesman Bill Burton issued a statement:

"The speech that Gov. Palin gave was well delivered, but it was written by George Bush’s speechwriter and sounds exactly like the same divisive, partisan attacks we’ve heard from George Bush for the last eight years. If Gov. Palin and John McCain want to define ‘change’ as voting with George Bush 90 percent of the time, that’s their choice, but we don’t think the American people are ready to take a 10 percent chance on change."
Tonight will be McCain's official acceptance of the nomination.

At 3:09 they show a black man at the GOP convention. Aside from his appearance, this seems to have been filmed in the 1950s.

there's more minorities at the Fish/Nadal match that's still going on at one thirty in the AM.
oh, I think ghouliani's speech went over because I was expecting a video of palin.

She still did not convince the voters that she was capable of leading a nation of 300 Million, should MaCain become too ill to work.

We can not overlook his age - we just can't!

I zoned out 10 min into her diatribe.

It's simultaneously hilarious and nightmarish that people are actually taking this shit seriously. The backpedaling and hyperdefensive justifications being churned out by the second for how McCain somehow isn't committing career suicide and how the party isn't a laughingstock for allowing this choice for their ticket is staggering.

And yeah, her speech was pretty much smug and abrasive, and plays up all the obnoxious stereotypes of the GOP as a party of dumbfuck cowboys. Boy, she sure was tough with all those sneering remarks about the intellectualism of her opponents. And what kind of faggy loser runs a community advocacy group? That's not doing anything for the people (the rich white people). Nevermind that Chicago neighborhood likely had more residents than all of Wasilla, AK.

That was one of the most underwhelming speeches I have ever listened to since Al Gore's speeches when he was VP.

VP Candidate or annoying Soccer mom?

When her speech turned to foreign relations, she fumbled on Venezuela. Except for the bits about her schmegege family, it was tightly scripted to position her as someone. This empress has no clothes and I for one would have preferred to see her deliver her speech in the nude.

"Steals the show"???? Jeez, we got bored and put the DVD of "Mostly Martha" back on three-quarters of the way through. Boring and repetitive. Her attacks on Obama were petty and unconvincing. And, what about that protester being removed from the hall? Something tells me Palin will go the way of Thomas Eagleton once the ethics violations in Alaska are known.

Come on now. As a life long registered democrat (unafraid to cross party lines), in its context, that was an amazing performance. She was brilliant. Sure, she won't win convert former Hillary/current Obama boosters in NY, LA, and Chicago, but pro-Hill types in middle America might be swayed to put that woman next in line. That was a moving speech.

She was great and Rudy kicked ass.

the knee jerk reaction/hatred by some of you is as predictable as a Clinton lie. put party politics aside and try and be objective; she was compelling. if i were a single issue voter, she wouldn't be an option just because of her position on choice, and that sucks because otherwise she is a good running mate.

obama has served his purpose - killing hilary. now if he's serious he's going to have to step up big time, because he's offering up fairy tales.

The GOP has a shot, but they're as divided as the dems this season, something pretty unusual.

The GOP *likes* the way things are. They're into this saber rattling, nationalistic, bible-thumping BS, guns and gas slurping trucks. They accepted JMc unwillingly, and are only appeased with the addition of Palin to the ticket.

McCain and his agenda have been reviled by the current ruling arm of the GOP. He had to backpedal on his agenda to get the nomination and despite the lip service now, I doubt he'd be able to go back to it if he won.

Are there any other Dems beside Russ Feingold that have tried to tackle campaign finance reform?

As an aside, from the look of things, Bristol is the 'hockey mom', not Sarah.

As far as I can tell, Obama is an earnest fellow who has a middle-of-the-road, conservative, typical Democratic-Party position on just about every issue. The business about how he has no policies or positions is old and worn out. Pay attention.

Policy is like sausage -- you can have it ground out for you by the pound. Quantity is just not an issue.

Palin has some weird ideas, such as that the invasion of Iraq was a holy war, but otherwise I'm sure she'll be supplied with as many policies as she needs.

At least she isn't a former governor.
We have done so well with them in the past don't ya know.

You all realize this is very dangerous: the Republican Party is proposing to put this woman (anti-choice, anti-gay marriage, pro-drilling, pro-guns,-- and look at her! she's a total stepford republican!), a heart attack away from being in charge of this nation! Meaning she could be the one appointing Supreme Court judges, and deciding who to go to war against! She's who would be left in charge if McCain dies or becomes incapacitated, which -- let's face it -- is statistically highly possible! Look at the man! He's already doddering.

And this, by a party that refused to vote in a law to make sure women got equal pay for jobs that men occupy, that voted in laws to protect companies that gyp women out of equal pay, that want all women to hand over the keys to their reproductive system to the government, and who actually yelled things like "IRON MY SHIRT" or "Who's taking care of your children" at other female politicians. They spit on women every day, and now they're calling people sexist for not appreciating this little woman with the bun on her head as a substitute for Hillary.

It's ironic the republicans are against the idea of government yet they're not doing a very good job of running it.

I can't help but wonder: if Palin is such a terrible candidate, why is every liberal in the country so upset/angry/scared that McCain picked her?

user-pic

I love all the ageist prejudice we have in the comments! Black guy good; old guy bad. A bigot is as a bigot does, I guess.

Ageism is there for a reason. When you're old and can't remember where your ass is, you can be a fine person, but you shouldn't be in the White House.

BTW:

http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/09/03/top-gop-pundits-fault-palin-selection/

Giuliani was such a macho, overbearing, old school NYC jerk. It was such a turnoff. Thank God he lost the Republican Primary, he'd be even worse than Bush.

With Palin, I agree with the above, she's damned good. She didn't come off as a redneck at all. The GOP is gonna get a bounce. If she were a Democrat, I'd love her buuuuut....

She and Rudy must have pissed off a lot of community organizers on both sides.

As a South Asian, her remark about how Obama would read terrorists their Miranda Rights was nauseating in it's fascist undertone. What exactly does she think of Abu Ghraib, Gitmo, and water boarding?

She's all about drilling, drilling, and more drilling. Oh and coal, clean-burning coal (oxymoron) that is. No talk about going green or global warming.

Unfortunately Obama's snide comment on rural folks clinging to guns and God will haunt him...For...Ever.

Can't wait for a moderator/journalist to ask her opinion on abstinence only education. But don't nobody even mention the word Bristol. Seriously. Just ask her opinion about abstinence. If she's still for it, then ask her why. Then watch her credibility crumble as she speaks.

Biden...Sic! Sic!...go for the jugular!

She was the governor of Alaska...ALASKA!!! How can you brag about what youve done and the budgets youve slashed when all you have to spend you money on are ice skates and Thera-Flu... ALASKA??!!

only an idiot would vote for mccain/palin
america has plenty if idiots

she came across as very immature last night IMO, was she running for homecoming queen? may energize the base and get the media whores all excited for ratings, but does nothing to independents and equally fires up the Dem base.

not to mention a speech packed with lies

btw, caption for pic above:
'Hey, pull my finger'

Onl an idiot would vote for mccain/palin. but you know that giant expanse between philly and las vegas? All idiots. And right now they are all saying 'I like that Palin. I can RELATE to her' and last week they were all saying 'i just dont feel COMFORTABLE with Barracks Obama.' Because in America, unlike other civilized nations, you vote for a 'man of the people' you need to feel 'comfortable' the leader shouldn't be 'too intellectual.' Just in case you are ever in your favorite podunk bar and they wander in and want to talk high school sports with you... thats who you want in charge.

fugothamist: you're right and I fear mccain/palin will win... too many idiots in this country.

Yeah i'm glad someone pointed out the lies, like when she said Obama wasn't interested in Alternative energy sources. Just a shame idiots lap it up. The republican party is sounding more and more like a weird religious cult everyday.

It seems EVERY speaker has to talk about John McCain being a POW which is getting as old as the man himself.

Last nite was better than yesterday. Giuliani talked like Jon Voight as the president from the Transformers movie and Daffy Duck combined. He was pretty good cause everything he said pissed me off. There was a point where he kept repeating "NADA!" which sounded just like another N word and the Repubs were giving this quasi nazi salute. Scary! I was kind of scared of Palin at first cause she was so mysterious but then she started speaking and I knew there was nothing to be afraid of. She speaks like a older chick who works at the library and not even the good part of the library but the SCIENCE LIBRARY! She's better than Dan Quayle but not by much. I don't see how most Male republicans will vote for her knowing she's a colonic away from the presidency. Even Ben Stein said he was floored with her pick.

Close your eyes the next time she speaks.

She sounds just like Julia Sweeney doing her "Pat" routine.

"Because in America, unlike other civilized nations, you vote for a 'man of the people' you need to feel 'comfortable' the leader shouldn't be 'too intellectual.' Just in case you are ever in your favorite podunk bar and they wander in and want to talk high school sports with you... thats who you want in charge."

#25: Head shaking. Regarding "intellectualism and elitism" in the White House, the Daily Show made a good point.

"It's the only job where if you get elected and you do well... THEY CARVE YOUR FACE IN THE SIDE OF A MOUNTAIN."

I think that might warrant being xtra speshul.

At 3:09 they show a black man at the GOP convention. Aside from his appearance, this seems to have been filmed in the 1950s.

Yes, because the Democratic party with their failed social programs have really helped blacks in this country...

only an idiot would vote for mccain/palin america has plenty if idiots

Would you rather McCain voters vote for Barr, Obama, Baldwin, or Nader?

I like how she tells people to leave her family out of the spotlight, yet after her speech she parades them out on stage for a huge photo opp and for the Cameras. I won't let the press off the hook for all the attention they've been giving them but give me a break. Talk about hypocrisy.

Yes, leave my family out of it, UNLESS it helps my campaign!

Also: Being governor and 'commander' of the Alaskan National Guard does NOT give you military experience!!! The Guard when sent into military action is federalized and under the jurisdiction of the President.

but you know that giant expanse between philly and las vegas? All idiots. And right now they are all saying 'I like that Palin. I can RELATE to her' and last week they were all saying 'i just dont feel COMFORTABLE with Barracks Obama.'

You can make this same generalization about certain neighborhoods of boroughs other than Manhattan. I've found that lots of these people have the "flyover mentality."

Regardless, it's not as true as you would think in either case...I was just visiting a state between Philly and Vegas, and the support is pretty even between the two parties.

Do you really think insulting large segments of the population is going to magically elect your candidate?

"Because in America, unlike other civilized nations, you vote for a 'man of the people' you need to feel 'comfortable' the leader shouldn't be 'too intellectual.'"

While I understand you are being ironic, happily mainstream America has grasped that the last "regular guy" they elected has not performed very well.

I'm just glad that the Republicans didn't hesitate to get back to their aggressive negativity - it kind of blunts this "boo hoo, you are being so mean to Palin" defense. If you are going to dish it out, you've got to take it as well.

I can't wait for the VP debate. Biden will chew her up and spit her out. Did Palin even mention the war in Iraq/Afghanistan? That speech was all sarcasm and no substance.

I agree Biden will whoop her ass in any debate, but I wouldn't underestimate her.

all that matters is that she's a MILF, unlike hillary. so she's got my vote!

I hate to say it but ever since McCain announced Palin, there sure hasn't been much attention paid to the Democratic party. It seems like a strategic move on his part and boy has she drawn attention to the Republican party... which personally I think needed it... otherwise it's just another "good old boys" campaign had he picked a white man. This is by far one of the most unusual nominations we've seen in history.

she will cry sexism and the media will play her as a victim after biden embarasses her

Palin has less political experience than Marty Markowitz, and while I love Marty I would not want him running the US. Imagine the interactions between a moose hunting ex-beauty queen and a super sharp ex-spook like Putin or a multi lingual attorney/economist like Sarkozy. That's scary. Those are the people that would be her peers. She isn't qualified or sharp enough to negotiate with other leaders on world policy. Two years as governor is not long enough to make any real performance assessment either way. Sometimes it takes a little longer for the wheels to fall off.

72 year old people in better health than McCain drop dead for no reason all the time. An anti gay, anti abortion, Alaskan mayor who puts way too much stock in a 2,000 year old carpenter is not someone that I want representing me.

#36 & 37: Biden will wipe the floor with her in the debates.

Then Republicans will call Biden sexist for "being too hard" on her, and the media will lap it up.

user-pic

The Dems took shots at Palin ALL FUCKIN WEEK! Then, when Palin brings it, the Dems cry.

"It's ironic the republicans are against the idea of government yet they're not doing a very good job of running it."

Actually, that's the point. Screw everything up, and then declare that government is the problem, not the solution.

Tina Fey or Elaine from Seinfeld?!?!?!?

Most polls were tied or close, BEFORE she dramaticlly fired up the base. I'd hate her too if I was a Democrat.

A pitbull with lipstick ! That's Palin same old republican shenanigans!

Alaska's Population: Barely 700.000.
No even a medium size county.

That's not experince, that's a smoke screen!

Of course Palin is n unusual and "spectacular" choice! The furthest nobody they could find!
That's the point! tho divert attention from the REAL REPUBLICANs in the white house....

Look, a bird! That's the republican way!

cucarachita,

Post # 15... You nailed it.

First off, the fact that the audience was screaming "drill baby drill" made me vomit in my mouth. I don't understand how people are neglecting the fact we dont have enough oil and natural gas in Alaska or off shore to sustain us. So even her billion dollar pipeline is bullshit. Also her comment of Venezuela turning off their supply- NEWS FLASH they already have, they set up a deal with China.

As for the rest of the speech all sarcasm and showing off her family. Nothing of substance and she actually made fun of Obama for having a good education. WTF?!?!?! When did education become a bad thing?

Lastly, Giuliani's petty mudslinging was completely ridiculous and he should be ashamed.

In deed #15, Vey dangerous we have to unite against this old tactics!

Did you guys see the part where Palin was talking about drilling in the alaskan oil reserves and everyone was like "DRILL BABY DRILL!" and you saw Levi Johnston mouth the words "I already Drilled your baby!"

The GOP has nothing new to offer except drilling in Alaska, which isn't that new—it will happen if this team is elected. They'll also move to abolish abortion, and strike gay marriage—a violation of civil rights (it would be like to government making a law saying you you can't interracially get married, which I'm sure some GOP members think should be law.

McCain/Palin is a recipe for disaster. She's has NO foreign policy very similar to Bush's foreign policy in 2000—NONE! and if McCain croaks, we're fucked!

Memo to Dick Cheney: Take Ms. Bullwinkle-eater on a hunting trip.

only an idiot would vote for mccain/palin
america has plenty if idiots

And the smart people will vote for the community activist who failed to improved his community, the state senator who spent three years defending infanticide, the US senator who accomplished nothing, and the nominee who's promising to deliver a healthy economy by raising taxes (remember how well that strategy worked for FDR)?

And in response to GOP's post. Take a look at footage from a few months ago when Palin was talking about Hillary being too sensitive to the media's comments. Funny how she said Hillary should quit whining and yet now that the tables have turned she is whining herself.

It is amazing how simple republican ideology is, any sort of intellectual exercise will put a spot light on their egotistical, "let's destroy all public policies" mentality. The survival of the fit in capitalistic terms, bringing guns and bibles as support of this barbaric way of government! Do they even know what is "public policies"? they call it communism! Way to simplify for the HUGE simple minded portion of America!
Let's keep home schooled picking presidents for the world!

desperate smiling lying nazis

So she's Ann Coulter without the anorexia...so what?

Any lowlife could deliver a bunch of one-liner cheap-shots. It's easy -- claim your opponent believes something ludicrous, then ridicule that position you claim they hold. Or ignore a mountain of evidence and just make a bald-faced claim about your opponent...I mean, come on, it's not like it's hard.

It's just the same old Republican politics of divisiveness, of trying to use personal attacks to overcome a complete lack of competence or ideas on your own side. People who compare her speech to Obama's 2004 keynote speech are, quite simply, high -- America rallied to Obama because they were tired of politics being about the same old trash-talk, and because they saw him as a guy who would break us out of that and unite the nation. Palin's speech was...the same old extremist trash-talk we're all tired of.

Look, America's in a bad place, with a tanking economy and failing industry, fighting too many wars and losing our place internationally to countries like China and Russia. As a voter looking for solutions, Obama looks like the best option -- he looks like a man who gets things done. McCain / Palin just looks like a bunch of petty politicians who will do anything to win so that they can preserve their ideology (the country be damned).

So, she can trash-talk. But like I learned playing basketball, at some point you've got to stop talking and shoot the ball. And over the past 8 years, every time the Republican party has been asked to shoot the ball, they've missed spectacularly. McCain/Palin haven't done anything to make me think they can actually put one home -- all they've shown is that they're not above vulgarity and extremist politics.

And we're supposed to be impressed by that? I mean, Ann Coulter's been flogging that schtick for years...so what?

"Palin has less political experience than Marty Markowitz"

That's great!

Maybe McCain will find a way to drop this crappy pick.

Look.... a bird!!!

-replublicans

She looks like a young Mrs Doubtfire

Palin tried to censor books in her home state and then went after the Librarian when she refused to go along with it. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!?!

user-pic

As far as Palin being a "reformer" and wanting to reduce government spending, she is a liar and a hypocrite. She says recently:

"In fact, I told Congress — I told Congress, “Thanks, but no thanks,” on that bridge to nowhere."

What really happened:

“Palin said Alaska’s congressional delegation worked hard to obtain funding for the bridge as part of a package deal and that she ‘would not stand in the way of the progress toward that bridge.”

Ketchikan Daily News 9/2006

And all that experience running the "city" in AK:

"It's not rocket science," Palin said, "It's $6 million and 53 employees."

Her "foreign policy" and "military experience:"

"I've been so focused on state government, I haven't really focused much on the war in Iraq."

"Also, [pray] for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending [U.S. soldiers] out on a task that is from God. That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that plan is God's will."

On sexism:

"[Hillary Clinton] does herself a disservice to even mention it, really," Palin said. "When I hear a statement like that coming from a woman candidate with any kind of perceived whine about that excess criticism, or maybe a sharper microscope put on her, I think, 'Man, that doesn't do us any good, women in politics, or women in general, trying to progress this country,'" Palin said. "I don't think it bodes well for her."

Bravo, douchebags. You picked yourselves a winner!

Did you guys notice that Fox didn't even devote it's primary focus on the GOP convention when every other channel was devoting tons of coverage to it? they didn't even broadcast in HD! It either tells me that even Fox doesn't give a shit about the GOP or that the republican base is so unsophisticated that no one has HDTV's. Very Curious for Fox.

Alaska's Population: Barely 700.000.
No even a medium size county.
That's not experince, that's a smoke screen!

Logic fail.

So we should only support governors from Texas and California?

President Arnold and President GW Bush

user-pic

bh, the reason is that no one other than the harcore GOP wingnuts really care about the RNC:

"Viewing numbers for the second night of the Republican convention in St. Paul, Minn., are out and it’s not particularly good news for the party.

Some 21.5 million people watched the Republican convention Tuesday night, Nielsen reported this afternoon, down slightly from the 22.1 million who watched second night coverage four years ago.

By comparison, almost 26 million people watched the second night of the Democratic convention last week, when Hillary Clinton addressed the crowd"

The final night of the DNC drew enormous ratings, reaching about 38 million people.

Just take a step back—it's true that the Obama supporters have called Palin out on being inexperienced (which is 100% true being that the population of Alaska, the largest state, is almost half to that of Rhode Island, the smallest state. Talk about idlin' Palin!!).

The issue with experience and qualifications can be debated until the sun burns out and yes, it's about experience, but it's also about principles and making choice decisions. I'm afraid to say that Palin is not exactly sound in these areas.

Maybe Obama doesn't have the experience of a second term president. But isn't that like saying that first time mothers are inadequate due to lack of experience? And hasn't the last 8 years shown us that sometimes, even after many kids, you still can't be a good mom and your kids will still hate you? 'Hope' IS a strategy.

She's actually governed a whole state. Doesn't matter what you think of Alaska but she has held numerous executive positions and has to deal with managing large populations and budget issues. Obama hasn't. The Dems are trying to compare Obama to Palin all the time now because he isn't on the same level as McCain. People will say that McCain hasn't held executive positions either but he's been in the Senate for years and he has voted on so many more things and has a reputation for being able to compromise, unlike Obama.

.
.
.
She's backing the same old replublican rethoric of bullying and destroying fiscal budgets! That's not progresive at all, Tested by all republicans in thewhite house. The outcome: economy in shit-hole!
.
.
.

user-pic

For all these people touting Palin's "executive experience" please tell us, how much executive experience does McCain have? Has he ever been Mayor or Governor? Hmmmm? Nope. Last I checked, she was the VP candidate. A position she doesn't even know all that much about:

"As for that VP talk all the time, I'll tell you, I still can't answer that question until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the VP does every day?"

Here are some number re: Gov spending. Turns out she loves pork:

"Wasilla had received few if any earmarks before Palin became mayor. She actively sought federal funds -- a campaign that began to pay off only after she hired a lobbyist with close ties to Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska), who long controlled federal spending as chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee. He made funneling money to Alaska his hallmark."

Aside from war, pro-life and anti-gay rights, the Republicans really don't stand for very much, do they?
The whole "Country First" slogan is such a load of elephant shit.

user-pic

oops forgot the numbers:

Alaska is set to receive $506.34 per capita, the highest in the nation, according to Taxpayers for Common Sense, a watchdog group which tracks earmarks.

So she's Ann Coulter without the anorexia...so what?
Priceless!

This election is the Democrats to lose. The one thing nobody commented on> I didn't hear the name George W. Bush mentioned once last night, by either Rudy or Ms. Palin. Let's see if McCain pays him homage tonight.

@75 -- ah, grasshopper, but you are forgetting. They are the party of God. So long as we elect Republicans, He will bless our nation. If we do not elect them, God will smite us -- that's what Palin meant when she said that this election was a matter of life and death.

So love of the Republican Party, love of God, and love of this Christian nation...they are all the same thing, my sun.

the fact that this smug shrew knows how to tap into the river of hate that those dead/alive pieces of shit give off means that i'm going to have to keep hearing her - groan.

user-pic

#41, I truly hope you are never in a position to advise Obama because your bigotry will guarantee his loss. We need to beat McCain and someone who would say Palin "puts way too much stock in a 2,000 year old carpenter" doesn't help. It's an arrogant, condescending and uninformed comment.

A lot of the conservative evangelical leaders (Dobson, Robertson, etc.) don't seem to have too positive of a take on Christianity. I get your concerns but they don't represent all Christians.

I'm not very religious myself, however, I respect the millions of Americans who are genuinely religious. You should, too.

Rudy only said 9/11 once. That killed tons of drinking games. And, Rudy attacking the liberal media is rich.

babyhitler's drill baby drill comment absolutely killed me.

@ #1, my friend, too, noticed a black guy in the audience but i didnt see him. Watching the RNC is sort of like where's waldo, except its where's Darnell?

Judith Nathan for President!!

The Palin's youngest daughter is adorable.

Our choice appears to be clear: vote Republican and an inexperienced politician with ties to religious extremists will be on heart beat away from the presidency, vote Democratic and an inexperienced politician with ties to religious extremists will be the President. I'm writing in Ron Paul.

user-pic

Ron Paul is a religious extremist himself, idiot.

Ron Paul may be religious, but he stands for liberty and less government control.

I will be writing him in as well.

i was sitting here wondering why its all liberals posting on here. and i realized. most of you are probably working in some government office with twice as much staff as needed feeding the wasteful big government agenda. sitting around at work doing nothing all day and wasting money, while the conservatives are hard at work. ironic isn't it

honestly for you swing voters out there -

WHAT'S TO DECIDE?!

this woman who is clearly a total hypocrite. she's arrogant, not-so-bright (at least for a high-ranking politican), and obnoxious.

she's bush with boobs.

bush with boobs...

Ma Bell says at 1:40pm in the afternoon...

If you follow the comments on this blog you'd know that plenty (if not most) people here are actually pretty far to the right. It's not that "all Liberals" are posting here, it's just that the Republican candidates suck and both the right and the left have noticed.

Funny how she laments that Obama would give us nothing but "more orders from Washington," yet she believes in a government that's entitled to hand down orders on what women can and can't do with their own bodies.

pumpkin13,

She's protecting the rights of the unborn child. It has nothing to do with trying to control a woman's "right" to her body.

I don't think I've ever seen such a crop of crap running for President. You've got Obama who's a great public speaker but that doesn't mean he's qualified to run a country. McCain is a loose cannon with a short fuse who looks older by the minute. Biden has been trying and failing to be President since I was in college and never connects with anyone. Palin and her Stepford family is a nobody from a blip on the map state who is scarier than all of them.

There was really only one choice of substance and for all intent and purposes already was the President, and that was Hillary.

Yeah I mean did she actually say anything with actual content to it?
No she didn't.

The debates really are going to be a blood bath

Nixon vs Kennedy all over again

plus now we have Quayle vs Bentsen

Too bad people care more about a show and gossip rather than anything that applies to their lives when it comes to voting

@93 -- well, sadly, until they find that baby-tree everyone's looking for, fetuses and womens' bodies are something of an intertwined issue.

user-pic

And what's with the quotes around the word "right?" Are you saying a woman doesn't have a "right" to her body?

"I love all the ageist prejudice we have in the comments! Black guy good; old guy bad. A bigot is as a bigot does, I guess."

You're the bigot. Do you really think that these are the reasons people like and dislike a candidate? What are you talking about?

"i was sitting here wondering why its all liberals posting on here."

Gothamist is a pretty liberal blog.

"most of you are probably working in some government office with twice as much staff as needed feeding the wasteful big government agenda"

Nope.

"sitting around at work doing nothing all day and wasting money, while the conservatives are hard at work. ironic isn't it"

Yeah, if you're a con, your post is pretty ironic. Go to a conservative blog and read the posts during the day.

Her needless, and ill-chosen mud-slinging was not welcome. Why mudsling? Why not try to inspire?

The republicans are totally out of the water when it comes to the average American.

Watched it. Did anybody else have the urge to smack Rudy's obnoxious peevish incestuous short-man insulting face? What an total jerk. It's one thing to be insightful and incisive. It's another thing to be a smirking, lying undeservedly-inflated-ego pr-ck.
And c'mon, we all know Palin was picked to grab the pissed-off Hillary supporters. But we also know why McCain agreed to pick her

But yeah, I'd hit that.
Make her wear her wear a pair of antlers with some pond plants hanging out of her mouth.
Gotta love "Moosey-style" with the Alaskan librarian MILF.

Ron Paul is a religious extremist himself, idiot.

I think he's devout in his beliefs; I'm not sure how that makes him an extremist.

But he could be into bondage, crack, and strippers for all I care. Those are also practices that some may disagree with. But Ron Paul would never tell you what you can and cannot do.

A president is not authorized by the Constitution to do so. Morality laws are to be determined by the states and localities.

Where was Sen. Larry Craig R.ID. ? Oh that's right, he never made it out of the airport.

gossipgirl-

Then why doesn't she support policies that insure that those unborn children have adequate health insurance, equal pay, an unspoiled environment, comprehensive sex ed, prison reform, immigration reform, an end to the war, accountability in the housing and credit crises, and in short, even one single thing to make certain that those children have a shot at a good life?

Even her claim to be a champion of special needs children was a lie- she cut state funding 62%.

And how did she slash budgets in Alaska? Not by selling items on Ebay. By sucking hundreds of millions out of the federal budget: your tax dollars, Palin fans. Including the money that was earmarked for the famous Bridge to Nowhere- the bridge won't get built, but Alaska (under Ms. Palin) kept the money. She's already under investigation for abuse of power, and she's only had power for a short time over relatively few people. How does any of this bode well for our future?

This truly is Bush all over again. If we can't learn not to fall for this dumb trick every time they trot it out, America is lost. Thanks, patriots. While you were gloating about kicking the uppity liberal's ass (and my God, you've shouted us all so far to the right that these liberals, as you love to call them, would've barely passed for moderates 3 decades ago), you've given yourself to your enemy. These people are not on your side, America. Stop dreaming! This thing with the right wing is like a bad, abusive relationship, swooning over policies that treat you horribly, take all your money and leave you with a stopped-up toilet and cigarette burns on your sheets.

And speaking of taking all your money, I hear a lot about "Obama will raise your taxes". Hmm..well, before launching into a discussion of taxes and how they're connected to services for the benefit of the community, can we talk for just a second about utility deregulation and what it's done to my utility bills? I now have to pay twice for my electricity! Thanks, Republican Party! This obsession with deregulation led to Enron, the mortgage crisis, the banking crisis- stop deregulating everything and bailing everyone out all the time! It's costing average Americans a fortune and putting us out of our homes! Your talk about the glory of the lives of factory workers at the RNC last night was 50 years out of date. I dare you to go to Michigan or South Carolina and tell them what exact industries are going to come back and give them the secure, good-paying jobs they need. I dare you to go to California and tell the people who lived in their own houses 8 years ago and in rented apartments today that the Republican Party has responsibly watched out for their interests. I dare you to explain to an Iraq war orphan just what her parent's death was supposed to achieve- to muscle our way into control of a natural resource of a country on the other side of the world that we know we'll eventually have to give up on anyway?

You know what? Obama is right. It truly didn't matter who got nominated: it's not about him. It's not about the Clintons or the Kennedys. The Republicans have to go. It's that simple. For the good of America, they must. They've had their chance to prove their ideas are good for us: 24 years controlling Congress, 6 years with the White House AND Congress- they've been able to force their agenda through plenty, and they've done so with glee, bile, arrogance and gloating. And now they've screwed us all, but they're still counting on enough of us to fall for their sorry crap all over again. Head's up, Republicans! When you call for change, it just keeps reminding us how bloody long you've been in charge!

If you're a fiscal conservative, DON'T VOTE FOR MCCAIN.

If you're a libertarian, DON"T VOTE FOR MCCAIN.

If you're a feminist, DON'T VOTE FOR MCCAIN.

If you believe in global warming, DON'T VOTE FOR MCCAIN.

If you believe in a balanced budget, DON'T VOTE FOR MCCAIN.

If you believe in honor and principles, DON'T VOTE FOR MCCAIN.

And so on and so on.

They got to him. They wore him down. He wants to be president and will literally do anything. The moment he let them talk him into picking Palin, it was all over for him.

This is serious, people. It isn't about fetuses or sexism or teen sex or racism. A criminal distortion of American values and priorities is taking place. DON'T VOTE FOR MCCAIN!

McCain is not a fiscal conservative, but neither is Obama!

You're not listening. I didn't say Obama was a fiscal conservative, and I didn't say you should vote for him. I said stop voting against your own self-interest and teach the Republican Party a lesson it sorely needs. If you believe in the REAL values and worth of the conservative point of view in America, show some REAL courage and be a REAL patriot and demand that Rove and all his ugly distorting tactics and his pack of power-mad, sycophantic liars be abandoned and shunned and thrown out of Washington: Bush, Cheney, McCain, Palin, Romney, Giuliani and all the rest. If McCain still had an ounce of integrity left, he would have thrown Rove out on his ass. But no, he wants to be President, goddammit, and he's glad to embrace any Turdblossom in Washington to make that happen.

These people are making suckers out of you. Stop gloating and cheering their inexcusably ugly behavior, you're falling for their game and you know what? They know who's being gamed, and it's not the Democratic Party, it's the American people.

Don't you understand that the reason they want power so badly is because it enables them to avoid having to take responsibility and play by the rules that they feel so certain they can make for you? Just think of Nancy Reagan begging for stem cell research! I'll bet she never thought she'd be treated like that by her fellow Republicans. I wonder if she ever thinks about the families of AIDS patients who begged her husband to help them and were turned down in the 80s.

If your experience of Rovian Rule for the last 8 years doesn't make you feel sick to your stomach, then I can't imagine what to tell you.

But just try and defend their record: They tanked the economy. They destroyed the rule of law. They've given armloads of cash to their friends. They created the Washington culture that they're now going to change. To what? They were riding high in 2000! Let's go back to that! Do they have anything new, anything at all, to explain how they're going to fix things- things they broke- beyond throwing out the liberals, whoever they may be? Most of them won't even admit there's a problem! These Republicans, from the Contract With America forward, have shown themselves to be weak and inept: unemployment is up, prices are up, foreclosures and bankruptcies are up, environmental protections for our air, water and National Forests have been eroded, war profiteering, torture and domestic spying have become American policy, politics and cronyism placed above competence- please name one substantive thing that the Republicans have done to make America stronger and better.

Unless you're super-rich and have been saving a bundle on your capital gains tax. If only the people who actually benefit from Republican policies directly voted for them and no one else, they'd get precisely what they deserve: 1% of the vote.

Um, weren't Chaney, Schwerner and Goodman community organizers?
