McCain Officially Nominated, But Palin Steals the Show

Senator John McCain was officially nominated as the presidential candidate of the Republican party last night, but his running mate Sarah Palin took the convention hall by storm. The Governor of Alaska addressed the crowd and energized them by introducing herself and her family--and aggressively attacking Barack Obama:

Before I became governor of the great state of Alaska, I was mayor of my hometown. And since our opponents in this presidential election seem to look down on that experience, let me explain to them what the job involves. I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a ‘community organizer,’ except that you have actual responsibilities.

...We tend to prefer candidates who don't talk about us one way in Scranton and another way in San Francisco.

She also slammed the media, stressed off-shore drilling, and spoke to McCain's experience. Here's a transcript and video is below.

Former NYC mayor Rudy Giuliani also "brought delegates to their feet repeatedly" with his pointed attacks on Obama. He said, “Barack Obama has never led anything. Nothing. Nada. So, our opponents want to reframe the debate. They would have you believe that this election is about ‘change versus more of the same.’ But that’s really a false choice. Because ‘change’ is not a destination ... just as ‘hope’ is not a strategy.”

Giuliani also boldly referred to disgraced former police commissioner Bernard Kerik, when recalling September 11, 2001, "Without really thinking, based on just emotion, spontaneous, I grabbed the arm of then-Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik, and I said to him, ‘Bernie, thank God George Bush is our president.’” Here's a transcript and video is below.

Democrats fired back, with strategists calling her speech "snide" and noted a lack of ideas about the economy. Obama's spokesman Bill Burton issued a statement:

"The speech that Gov. Palin gave was well delivered, but it was written by George Bush’s speechwriter and sounds exactly like the same divisive, partisan attacks we’ve heard from George Bush for the last eight years. If Gov. Palin and John McCain want to define ‘change’ as voting with George Bush 90 percent of the time, that’s their choice, but we don’t think the American people are ready to take a 10 percent chance on change."
Tonight will be McCain's official acceptance of the nomination.

    TuraLura you're terrific.

Um, weren't Chaney, Schwerner and Goodman community organizers?

  • TuraLura

You're not listening. I didn't say Obama was a fiscal conservative, and I didn't say you should vote for him. I said stop voting against your own self-interest and teach the Republican Party a lesson it sorely needs. If you believe in the REAL values and worth of the conservative point of view in America, show some REAL courage and be a REAL patriot and demand that Rove and all his ugly distorting tactics and his pack of power-mad, sycophantic liars be abandoned and shunned and thrown out of Washington: Bush, Cheney, McCain, Palin, Romney, Giuliani and all the rest. If McCain still had an ounce of integrity left, he would have thrown Rove out on his ass. But no, he wants to be President, goddammit, and he's glad to embrace any Turdblossom in Washington to make that happen.

These people are making suckers out of you. Stop gloating and cheering their inexcusably ugly behavior, you're falling for their game and you know what? They know who's being gamed, and it's not the Democratic Party, it's the American people.

Don't you understand that the reason they want power so badly is because it enables them to avoid having to take responsibility and play by the rules that they feel so certain they can make for you? Just think of Nancy Reagan begging for stem cell research! I'll bet she never thought she'd be treated like that by her fellow Republicans. I wonder if she ever thinks about the families of AIDS patients who begged her husband to help them and were turned down in the 80s.

If your experience of Rovian Rule for the last 8 years doesn't make you feel sick to your stomach, then I can't imagine what to tell you.

But just try and defend their record: They tanked the economy. They destroyed the rule of law. They've given armloads of cash to their friends. They created the Washington culture that they're now going to change. To what? They were riding high in 2000! Let's go back to that! Do they have anything new, anything at all, to explain how they're going to fix things- things they broke- beyond throwing out the liberals, whoever they may be? Most of them won't even admit there's a problem! These Republicans, from the Contract With America forward, have shown themselves to be weak and inept: unemployment is up, prices are up, foreclosures and bankruptcies are up, environmental protections for our air, water and National Forests have been eroded, war profiteering, torture and domestic spying have become American policy, politics and cronyism placed above competence- please name one substantive thing that the Republicans have done to make America stronger and better.

Unless you're super-rich and have been saving a bundle on your capital gains tax. If only the people who actually benefit from Republican policies directly voted for them and no one else, they'd get precisely what they deserve: 1% of the vote.

McCain is not a fiscal conservative, but neither is Obama!

  • TuraLura

    gossipgirl-

Then why doesn't she support policies that insure that those unborn children have adequate health insurance, equal pay, an unspoiled environment, comprehensive sex ed, prison reform, immigration reform, an end to the war, accountability in the housing and credit crises, and in short, even one single thing to make certain that those children have a shot at a good life?

Even her claim to be a champion of special needs children was a lie- she cut state funding 62%.

And how did she slash budgets in Alaska? Not by selling items on Ebay. By sucking hundreds of millions out of the federal budget: your tax dollars, Palin fans. Including the money that was earmarked for the famous Bridge to Nowhere- the bridge won't get built, but Alaska (under Ms. Palin) kept the money. She's already under investigation for abuse of power, and she's only had power for a short time over relatively few people. How does any of this bode well for our future?

This truly is Bush all over again. If we can't learn not to fall for this dumb trick every time they trot it out, America is lost. Thanks, patriots. While you were gloating about kicking the uppity liberal's ass (and my God, you've shouted us all so far to the right that these liberals, as you love to call them, would've barely passed for moderates 3 decades ago), you've given yourself to your enemy. These people are not on your side, America. Stop dreaming! This thing with the right wing is like a bad, abusive relationship, swooning over policies that treat you horribly, take all your money and leave you with a stopped-up toilet and cigarette burns on your sheets.

And speaking of taking all your money, I hear a lot about "Obama will raise your taxes". Hmm..well, before launching into a discussion of taxes and how they're connected to services for the benefit of the community, can we talk for just a second about utility deregulation and what it's done to my utility bills? I now have to pay twice for my electricity! Thanks, Republican Party! This obsession with deregulation led to Enron, the mortgage crisis, the banking crisis- stop deregulating everything and bailing everyone out all the time! It's costing average Americans a fortune and putting us out of our homes! Your talk about the glory of the lives of factory workers at the RNC last night was 50 years out of date. I dare you to go to Michigan or South Carolina and tell them what exact industries are going to come back and give them the secure, good-paying jobs they need. I dare you to go to California and tell the people who lived in their own houses 8 years ago and in rented apartments today that the Republican Party has responsibly watched out for their interests. I dare you to explain to an Iraq war orphan just what her parent's death was supposed to achieve- to muscle our way into control of a natural resource of a country on the other side of the world that we know we'll eventually have to give up on anyway?

You know what? Obama is right. It truly didn't matter who got nominated: it's not about him. It's not about the Clintons or the Kennedys. The Republicans have to go. It's that simple. For the good of America, they must. They've had their chance to prove their ideas are good for us: 24 years controlling Congress, 6 years with the White House AND Congress- they've been able to force their agenda through plenty, and they've done so with glee, bile, arrogance and gloating. And now they've screwed us all, but they're still counting on enough of us to fall for their sorry crap all over again. Head's up, Republicans! When you call for change, it just keeps reminding us how bloody long you've been in charge!

If you're a fiscal conservative, DON'T VOTE FOR MCCAIN.

If you're a libertarian, DON"T VOTE FOR MCCAIN.

If you're a feminist, DON'T VOTE FOR MCCAIN.

If you believe in global warming, DON'T VOTE FOR MCCAIN.

If you believe in a balanced budget, DON'T VOTE FOR MCCAIN.

If you believe in honor and principles, DON'T VOTE FOR MCCAIN.

And so on and so on.

They got to him. They wore him down. He wants to be president and will literally do anything. The moment he let them talk him into picking Palin, it was all over for him.

This is serious, people. It isn't about fetuses or sexism or teen sex or racism. A criminal distortion of American values and priorities is taking place. DON'T VOTE FOR MCCAIN!

Where was Sen. Larry Craig R.ID. ? Oh that's right, he never made it out of the airport.

  • Bottomless Chips

Ron Paul is a religious extremist himself, idiot.

I think he's devout in his beliefs; I'm not sure how that makes him an extremist.

But he could be into bondage, crack, and strippers for all I care. Those are also practices that some may disagree with. But Ron Paul would never tell you what you can and cannot do.

A president is not authorized by the Constitution to do so. Morality laws are to be determined by the states and localities.

  • dadoc

    But yeah, I'd hit that.

Make her wear her wear a pair of antlers with some pond plants hanging out of her mouth.

Gotta love "Moosey-style" with the Alaskan librarian MILF.

  • dadoc

Watched it. Did anybody else have the urge to smack Rudy's obnoxious peevish incestuous short-man insulting face? What an total jerk. It's one thing to be insightful and incisive. It's another thing to be a smirking, lying undeservedly-inflated-ego pr-ck.

And c'mon, we all know Palin was picked to grab the pissed-off Hillary supporters. But we also know why McCain agreed to pick her

The republicans are totally out of the water when it comes to the average American.

  • CedDi80

Her needless, and ill-chosen mud-slinging was not welcome. Why mudsling? Why not try to inspire?

"i was sitting here wondering why its all liberals posting on here."

Gothamist is a pretty liberal blog.

"most of you are probably working in some government office with twice as much staff as needed feeding the wasteful big government agenda"

    Nope.

"sitting around at work doing nothing all day and wasting money, while the conservatives are hard at work. ironic isn't it"

Yeah, if you're a con, your post is pretty ironic. Go to a conservative blog and read the posts during the day.

  • robingee

"I love all the ageist prejudice we have in the comments! Black guy good; old guy bad. A bigot is as a bigot does, I guess."

You're the bigot. Do you really think that these are the reasons people like and dislike a candidate? What are you talking about?

  • SP

And what's with the quotes around the word "right?" Are you saying a woman doesn't have a "right" to her body?

  • Thespis

@93 -- well, sadly, until they find that baby-tree everyone's looking for, fetuses and womens' bodies are something of an intertwined issue.

  • spiritross

Yeah I mean did she actually say anything with actual content to it?

    No she didn't.

The debates really are going to be a blood bath

Nixon vs Kennedy all over again

plus now we have Quayle vs Bentsen

Too bad people care more about a show and gossip rather than anything that applies to their lives when it comes to voting

  • bornbrednewyorker

I don't think I've ever seen such a crop of crap running for President. You've got Obama who's a great public speaker but that doesn't mean he's qualified to run a country. McCain is a loose cannon with a short fuse who looks older by the minute. Biden has been trying and failing to be President since I was in college and never connects with anyone. Palin and her Stepford family is a nobody from a blip on the map state who is scarier than all of them.

There was really only one choice of substance and for all intent and purposes already was the President, and that was Hillary.

  • gossipgirl

    pumpkin13,

She's protecting the rights of the unborn child. It has nothing to do with trying to control a woman's "right" to her body.

  • pumpkin13

Funny how she laments that Obama would give us nothing but "more orders from Washington," yet she believes in a government that's entitled to hand down orders on what women can and can't do with their own bodies.

  • VanessaNYC

Ma Bell says at 1:40pm in the afternoon...

If you follow the comments on this blog you'd know that plenty (if not most) people here are actually pretty far to the right. It's not that "all Liberals" are posting here, it's just that the Republican candidates suck and both the right and the left have noticed.
