A Giant Zucchini Grows in Queens

queenszucchini.jpgOne amateur Queens farmer has found herself standing in the shadows of a 6-foot-tall zucchini! The Daily News reports on Apollonia Castitlione's green thumb, and says she only used fertilizer and water to grow the massive fruit. She told the paper, "I've had my vegetable garden for 26 years, but I never saw anything so spectacular"...and it's still growing! At this rate, it could take out the world record holder, a 7-foot, 10-inch zucchini from India. Once it stops growing, Castitlione doesn't want to eat the fruits of her labor, saying "it's getting hard, so wouldn't be good to eat anymore," but she will save the seeds for next year. I hate it when the press mistake my penis for a plant

"I went to look at it one day and was like, 'It's a little long,' then a few days later, I said, 'Oh, my God, what's this?'

"I decided I wasn't going to touch it and just let it grow."

"It's getting hard, so wouldn't be good to eat anymore and it's starting to grow very slowly."

"It's so straight, it's so perfect. Usually, some are really crooked."

That's not a zucchini, it's a googootz.

#3 Yes!!

My parents have a neighbor who grows beautiful googootz. My mom simmers them in a spicy thin red sauce... delicious over macaroni or right out of the pot... mmm mmm mmm!

Overtake India! USA! USA! USA! Oops. Too much RNC last night.

How can we be sure that's not just a regular-sized zucchini and that Apollonia Castitlione is in reality just 4 inches tall?.

My roommates and I grew some zucchini from seed a few years ago in our backyard in Williamsburg. We had one that was probably 4-in in diameter and about 3-ft long. We joked that the soil was probably radioactive... and, since it probably was, we were all too scared to eat it.

I like the way she hugs her zucchini.

The best part is she can't lose it in the bathtub.
