Residents Sue NYPD's Over Bunker Plans

2008_09_1pp.jpgThe AP reports that three residential co-ops are suing the NYPD over its plan to build a "high-tech command bunker" at 1 Police Plaza. The residents believe that the bunker "must undergo environmental and land use reviews," but the NYPD says no review is required, plus there's "no change to the exterior or its existing footprint." Another issue residents are concerned about it traffic that construction will bring--1 Police Plaza is just north of the Brooklyn Bridge exits. Chinatown has been hit hard by the closure of Park Row after September 11, and one resident adds that the NYPD "should be moving critical functions away [from] densely populated" areas.

Perhaps the NYPD along with other vital city government facilities should move to Governors Island. It is much easier to secure an island.

Sue NYPD's what?

"must undergo environmental and land use reviews,"

Huh?

Yes, the pristine wilderness and natural beauty of lower Manhattan must be preserved at all costs. The urban caribou might also be disturbed.

the NYPD are really screwing those guys.

NYPD screws everybody. They also screw up everything. Why just the other day, a couple of cops gave me a hard time for taking pictures under the Brooklyn Bridge, and they refused to listen to me explain the MTA's policy allowing photography of any and all structures they run, including all the East River bridges.

The NYPD bunker should be located under the Chancellery Gardens not far from The Reichstag.

If you read the NYPD response to this lawsuit, they claim that they currently use a conference room as an emergency response center. And that they are simply moving that function into a new 22,000 square foot facility that they are renovating. And that they are not going to be doing anything thing different in the new facility. BTW, they also want to spend $13.8M to do nothing new.

Someone is fibbing and fibbing badly...

The best location for Police Headquarters is Randalls Island. It is centrally located with respect to all 5 boroughs, would give them land, water, and potentially air access for emergencies, and would cut down on the commute time for 1/2 of their employees.

Imagine getting Park Row re-opened, getting back that offramp from the Brooklyn Bridge, getting thousands of placarded cars off the streets of Lower Manhattan, AND getting back almost 1000 indoor parking spaces that the NYPD is just sitting on.
