Big Night: Palin, Giuliani Get Ready for Convention

Tonight is arguably the biggest night of the Republican National Convention, as it will be vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin's first national campaign speech. Politico has five things to watch for, including how Palin will have to emphasize why she's experienced. Her aide said, "She will speak as a governor, a former mayor and someone with both hands on the steering wheel of America's energy economy. She will detail her record of shaking up the status quo in Alaska and standing up to entrenched interests to put the government back on the side of the people."

Hilariously, two Republican pundits were caught on live mic "bemoaning" the Palin pick. Per The Caucus, Peggy Noonan doesn't think she's the most qualified, "No. I think they went for the — excuse me — political (expletive) about narratives. … Every time the Republicans do that, because that’s not where they live and that’s not what they’re good at, they blow it.” In another vein, the Washington Post has an article on the McCain camp's war against the media.

Also in prime time will be former mayor Rudy Giuliani, so expect lots of 9/11, America's darkest day, etc. Other speakers tonight are others who tried to win the Republican nomination: former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee.

was anyone else troubled by this line from guiliani:

"I learned as a trial lawyer a long time ago, if you don't have the facts, you've got to change them."

  • fakenewyorker

that massive screen behind the podium is straight out of 1984.

i'll take zeus over big brother any day.

  • Anna_Merkin

I felt like I was listening to the New Fascists. Giuliani's a nasty old man. Palin delivered her speech well, but here's my take away:

    a) Vote for McCain because he's a POW and obviously loves his country more than the Democrats

    b) Obama's not like us and really hasn't done anything of substance

    c) I'm just like you and I'm tough, so don't mess with me

    d) Did I mention that McCain was a war hero?

  • JacqueMehoff

don't, you have to listen to more of this.

  • tblake

chuzzlewit's funny. i'll bet that marriage lasts 3 years. my, isn't that bitchy of me?

  • tblake

This convention is a total shitshow. I watch for a few minutes but then invariably have to turn it off. Who are these people?

  • NannyState

Sarah Palin's speech was pretty good for her campaign for Alaska Governor -what? She's running for what?

  • JacqueMehoff

    and such a classy bunch.

the gloves better be off with all of palin's snide remarks.

  • yakatori

I've never seen a group of people so full of hate as I have at this convention and I grew up in KKK land.

When will Rudy's scare tactics end? It's completely disrespectful to the incident.

  • Fritzdecat

Rudy should be down at Duke trying to get his

chip off the old block back on the Golf Team...

    Rudy its a Cinderfella Story

  • JacqueMehoff

cindy just mouthed "how dare they" following ghouliani's lead.

  • chuzzlewit

well, G. just pulled out the old neuff-un-un.

but the real heroes tonight are bristol and levi - i am so inspired every time they are on camera. those two brave teenagers skillfully eluded their parent's supervision and fucked - they, my friends, are the true mavericks here. i will be writing in my vote for them this november - who better to lead this great country, really.

  • JacqueMehoff

OK, giuliani is saying mccain's been "tested" what the heck does that mean?

  • dooWOP

Is this guy still seen as a tough guy? Funny thing, whenever I hear him with that lisp of his I just wanna give him a good beating...

  • JacqueMehoff

I think I just saw a guy sleeping during mitt romney's speech.

  • Jerky

Gee, any bets on how many times Goombajohhny will mention 9/11 in his speech??

  • Public Relations

Remember how high Guiliani was in the Presidential candidates polls a year ago -then slipped down to nothing after his questionable abilities were considered by the voters.

The Dems could have a field day with this if they chose to

  • JacqueMehoff

what's wrong with Mccains fingers? they're sharp and pointy.

did the "gooks" do that to him? whom he hates.

  • fakenewyorker

nice to see mccain and company shielding the poor widdle kiddies from the evil sexist media.

  • Novanglus

I think people talk about people who talk about Giuliani talking about 9/11 more than Giuliani actually talks about 9/11.

Palin has a nice set, btw.

  • NannyState

    Garbages all.

  • gossipgirl

I think people talk about Giuliani talking about 9/11 more than Giuliani actually talks about 9/11.
