They should have expected little of Jon Niese, who went three-plus innings in his big-league debut and gave back the Mets' lead in the fourth. No. 3: Bite off fingernails. The Mets managed to dodge bullet after bullet until they finally scratched a run across in the 10th. Then Luis Ayala allowed a double and a walk but got a strikeout of Ricky Weeks to end the game. Why an August waiver-wire guy is a division-leader's closer is a mystery that is perhaps best left unsolved, but the Mets stayed two games ahead of the Phillies.
- Yankees 7, Rays 2: Of course they win now. Mike Mussina earned his 17th victory, Joba Chamberlain pitched 1 1/3 innings in relief and Alex Rodriguez went 2-for-3 with a walk and a homer. That's the end of the good news. The Yankees are 11 games back of the Rays. The Red Sox also won Tuesday.
- At the U.S. Open, both of last year's finalists needed five sets to reach the quarterfinals. Novak Djokovic squeaked by Tommy Robredo and then Roger Federer looked sluggish before finally dispatching Igor Andreev. Andy Roddick destroyed Fernando Gonzalez in the night session.
- Liberty 90, Comets 87 (OT): What a steal. The Liberty blew a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter and a seven-point lead in overtime and still won.

My guess is they already have it.
My wife was watching the Mets last night and told me that they has a 4 run lead at the end of the the third. I then informed her that the rule of thumb is they must have an early lead of at least 10 runs and then they would win by one run.
The Yankees aren't losing because they're cursed because they're tearing down the stadium, they're losing because they're not that good.
