"They don't differentiate because it's not their job to do so." Exactly. In fact, it's their job to report that or any other violation of the law to law enforcement officers. This is clearly against the law, and has been since long before 9/11... there've even been signs advising against making even joking references posted at security lines for years. The responding police officers are the ones, then, who have the authority to decide whether to make an arrest or not. Probably in this case they decided to do so mostly because of the attitude they were faced with.

Not me -- as much as both the government and the media attempt to fuel it, I have no "terrorismphobia." There's been one day in what, the past decade, on which any serious security incident that would have put my life in danger occurred on a US-originating flight. If I'd heard that exchange as it happened, I'd have wanted to be on the plane, on my way. Without her.

abcohen - IIRC, once the door closed, the manifest is checked and the bags checked by any people not on the plane are removed.

On the other hand, she is completely right. The TSA are fools and unqualified. Of course, that isn't really a reason to justify claiming there is a bomb on board.

But the logic does make sense - if someone buys a ticket and checks a bag (but doesnt get on the plane shouldnt they remove the bag?) what if she did have a bomb on her bag... I think the airlines need to rethink the way they accept baggage (perhaps redesign the airplane to have double deckers just for people while all baggage goes in just a baggage plane in front of them...

I think that joking or not, we need to play it safe. No one did anything wrong here but HER. I am sure that the people on that plane would not have wanted to stay in the air if they know that joke was made. They would have wanted to play it safe. We should make people we think are "utter imbeciles" differentiate between what comments are legitimate and what comments aren't. When someone says "i put a bomb on that plane," we should give someone who's main function is to put boarding passes through an automatic reader the authority to judge whether that person is telling the truth or not before we bring that plane to the ground. Genius.

[12] It's because the people who "run" our "security" are utter imbeciles. I could tell you stories that would have you rolling in the aisles for hours. It's job security for them. Any time they can catch a "criminal," it justifies their continuing employment. I am not kidding when I say I suspect many of them have IQs below 100. Horror stories about the TSA's stupidity and mistreatment of travelers are a dime a dozen. A dime a gross, even.

Without questioning that what she said was stupid, I think it's crazy that the people who run security are unable to differentiate between someone who makes a stupid remark because they're annoyed about missing a flight and someone who is a legitimate threat.

The serious charges were dropped, and it's extremely rare for anyone who can afford to hire a good lawyer and pay a healthy fine to be jailed on a misdemeanor pot conviction. A no-jail sentence is almost certainly part of her plea agreement.
