Last night, the Republican National Convention got off to a subdued start as most of the focus was on Hurricane (now Tropical Storm) Gustav. First Lady Laura Bush and First Lady aspirant Cindy McCain asked for delegates and the country to extend aid to the affected region. While President Bush had to cancel his Monday night appearance, he will address the convention tonight via satellite at 9:30 p.m. EST. Other speakers will include former presidential candidate Fred Thompson and one of John McCain's VP shortlisters, Senator Joe Lieberman. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is bowing out due to California budget battle and it seems like Rudy Giuliani's keynote speech is getting bumped from today.

It seems that if McCain was really the "Maverick" that his supporters claim him to be, he would have bucked the Party and picked Lieberman. Just saying.
According to MSNBC, apparently his campaign advisor Charlie Black told him that if he picked Lieberman, the convention would essentially revolt. So he picked the Christian base of the GOP over moderates and independents.
Bush is too scared to show his face in person huh?
This convention is a bust. And it says a lot about today's GOP that having the so called leaders of the party (GWB and Dick) appear in person is a DETRIMENT. Shouldn't that tell us all something?
Oh and GWB, there is no need to "keep an eye on" this hurricane. That ship sailed 3 years ago.

Already got one old, white guy named Joe from the Senate in a VP spot this election. That would be more of a copycat than maverick thing to do at this point.

GOP lucked out by not having Bush there. they also lucked out by having Gustav as a lowly category 1. They get to look like they are in command and everything is going smoothly on the operations front when all it really was a 75 mph differential from Katrina and disaster like proportions. I still say that having Palin is a detriment to Male republicans.

Lieberman? He has baggage from an ugly lost campaign and has a neocon foreign policy.

Leiberman is a total tool. His two-faced ideals were at least partly responsible for costing Gore the election. Maybe if he had VP candidate who was actually into working for the ticket, Gore would have gone over the top.

Lieberman is still held in the Democrat pen until they win a solid majority in the Senate this fall. Then they will cut him loose like an old toothless Eskimo. And indeed we dodged a bullet by his not being picked for Vice. He likely would have started World War Three over a Palestinian falafel stand owner farting in Tel Aviv.
