The police are looking into a number of calls that Kevin Pravia made Saturday morning before his death. The Pace University student's body was found, with an electrical cord around his neck and plastic stuffed in his mouth, in his West 15th Street apartment by his roommate on Sunday.
The Daily News says that Pravia was described as "very drunk" when leaving a party in lower Manhattan. Evan Santoro said, "Someone helped him to a taxi and gave him cab fare. Nobody heard from him again." Investigators say that Pravia's laptop and cellphone were not in the apartment, but since roommate Josephine Madonna's jewelry was still in the apartment, police do not think robbery was a motive. Madonna, who went away for the weekend, returned to discover the apartment door unlocked and, in his room, Pravia under a sheet in his t-shirt and underwear.
It's still unclear whether his death will be ruled a homicide. The Post reports that the ME's office "found yesterday that there were no marks or bruises on his neck that would indicate he had been strangled." (Another Post source says that Pravia was "very promiscuous" but the Post adds "there were no signs he'd had sex the night he died.")
UPDATE: A man that was being questioned by the police has confessed to killing Pravia. The Post reports that the suspect, a 22-year-old Queens man said he met up with Pravia and went back to Pravia's apartment. He also calimed "he bought drugs from Pravia before they went to the apartment - though police sources said they doubt the drug buy claim," but the Daily News describes the suspect as a drug pusher. At Pravia's apartment, he "punched the sleeping teen, put an electrical cord around his neck, stuffed a plastic bag in his mouth and strangled him, and then left with Pravia's cell, iPod, and laptop, which he sold on the street.

I just hope this is seen as a cautionary tale to all of these naive kids who see this town as some sort of safe playground. NYC for all of it's positives is still an extremely predatory and dangerous environment.

Ummm..if you excuse ME, the news cycle covers the deaths and near deaths of many people Sean Bell, the little old lady who got her $900 and cane stolen, the (black) child hit by a stray bullet..I don't get your point.

Death is not funny, not usually, not when it is absurd. But this one is ... pathetic. It is in the news because it is pathetic. And it deserves a good laugh.

How can you not see my point? I'll make it plainer for you: People are killed every day in this city in every way, yet the vast majority barely get a paragraph or two on page 37 of the Post if that much. So why so much ink devoted to this guy? Perhaps because he's WHITE and young and handsome? Otherwise there really isn't very much that's remarkable about this case (if you're not into laughing about it, which I'm not). My condolences to the family too, but that wasn't the point.

Despite JenChungs claim, murder is not all THAT common and especially when a promising young student, is killed in connection with a lurid sex angle, that has public interest. The sad thing is that this is the entrenched thoughtless opinion so common in our city like a cancer on the civic politic.
After reading some of the comments on here I have to say most people (esp younger people as I am 47) have very little compassion or sensitivity these days. Did your parents do that lousy of a job that you have to come on here and ridicule a murder victim? Gay or straight this happens all the time and for you lowlifes to come on here and make sick jokes just shows how morally bankrupt you are. If this were a relative of yours it might not be so funny. Thank you. I'm a friend of Kevin, and it breaks my heart every time people ridicule him. I still feel an odd need to read these comments even now. On paper went out of their way to say that he was gay and "dated a lot of men" that's not really true. (And while I think using this example is weird) If a straight female 19 year old died they would not say that she'd dated a lot of men. I just want to thank you for your fleeting compassion. It's so rare these days.
