bdcjester Most people understand that grades for non-scientific pursuits are largely subjective. We are at this point a nation of people not educated in the objective, but schooled in the subjective. With that comes a distaste for precision. Simply look at how people hate math. They hate it because there is a right answer and wrong answer. Worse, they grade you on how much you get right!

I'm wondering why we're collectively saying that grades don't matter if, as a country, we push students to do well in school and drill it into their heads that education is paramount? So are we really saying that it doesn't matter how well you do in school as long as you graduate?

@ideas of march Yeah I heard about this, the guy did a bomb when he was like 15, he grew up and became a professor, 20 years later taught Obama. OH NO! HOw dare he become friends with his professor! Stop trying to dig up dirt that isn't there. Just disagree with his policies if you don't like him.

Thanks to "affirmative action" in academia a black person's education credentials will always seem questionable, even if people refuse to admit it. That's an enormous injustice to people of color who have legitimately earned their degrees instead of relying on white liberal guilt and racial quotas to get ahead. Whether that applies to Obama, I don't know. I do know that he hasn't put in too many days work in the Senate since he was elected. Maybe he was a no-show at Columbia too.

johnnye is right. Obama delivers a great written speech, but when he has to answer a question off the top of his head he's a worse speaker the W. As far as Columbia goes, isn't that where Krugman teaches economics? And both Krugman and Obama don't their elbows from third base about even junior high-school economics, I think we might have found the reason he doesn't talk about the place.

Though I'm a Republican and against affirmative action, I don't care if his education was obtained through that or not. As a Presidential candidate, I care about his goals and plans in office. The man DOES certainly have the best oratory skills of my lifetime, and I hope he can walk the walk, because at this point I plan on voting for him.

#1, everyone who has any sense harbors a want of revolution when they are young. Growing older and maturing typically means learning about the system and how to best take advantage and change it proper. Ayers didn't have much sense though.

He has also progressed to the point where he writes and delivers oratory that is pretty much unmatched in modern history. He has demonstrated himself to be strong political thinker. He has managed one of the most effective and innovative campaigns, derailing an establishment candidate thought to be inevitable (and likely winning the presidency despite many disadvantages). If he did benefit from affirmative action, this is one of the clearest demonstrations I've ever seen that it can actually accomplish what it is meant to in our society.

At this point in his life's achievements, it does not matter WHAT his grades were or whether he benefited from Affirmative Action. What matters is WHAT he has done with the opportunities and education he received. He has progressed further than 99% of his peers in terms of public recognition and his achievements
