VP Candidate Sarah Palin Says Daughter is Pregnant

2008_08_bpalin.jpgRepublican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin confirmed that her eldest daughter Bristol, 17, is five months pregnant. Guess that scurrilous pregnancy-conspiracy gossip that the youngest Palin (baby Trig) is actually Bristol's will have to end. Palin and her husband issued a statement, "Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family," and asked for the media to respect their privacy. Question: When is Fox News going to use a "Baby Mama" graphic, because wouldn't that be "fair and balanced"?

    everwood is gay.

nice find on that photo 52.

if palin does indeed become VP, and mccain kicks the bucket, has the baby daddy struck alaskan gold?

  • robingee

"The important thing is, the Palin family are taking responsibility, sticking together and supporting each other in a difficult time -- THAT tells me a lot about their character."

That's what you're SUPPOSED to do. So doing the right thing makes you a wonderful person? Good for them for supporting a pregnant daughter. Meh.

  • redhookreject

if you look at the hi res pic of Bristol, taken last spring...

you notice a promise ring. guess she broke the promise part of the ring.

Palin supports abstinence only education. Of course teens still have sex! How can they be expected to have safe sex, protect against pregnancy and STDs and AIDS if no one tells them how?? What they should figure it out on their own?

Yeah, she had a "choice" to keep the baby. Right. Palin has already stated that she would not allow abortion for her daughters even if they were raped.

  • jessecal

    OH NO- ! NOT PREGNANT. . .

    So let's see. . .

is America going to allow the dalliance of a teenage girl in Alaska-

to actually effect the future of the free world?!

    Ridiculous!

The world will be laughing at America for years to come!

How stupid can we possibly be??!!

  • Roxanne

    Thanks S.D.

Damn another republican going to hell. Democrats, majority rules and you lost, republicans have control of Hell.

  • west side Michael

I was not sure Republicans had sex at all.

She looks like a child and Levi her friend and

    dad to be too.

Ah for that old "in & out" urge.

  • Spirit of 76

Republicans want birth control to be banned

    Really?

Yes, really. And also this one showing almost all Republican reps voting against contraceptive aid. Fine, if you want to put a fine line around it, theocratic Republicans, okay? Why is it so hard to understand? They want abstinence to be the one, true path to birth control. Contraceptives are a tacit admission that abstinence is not practical and/or desirable for most people. Even Fox News, that bastion of liberal press (not), noted the growing campaign of trying to deny contraceptives to women.

  • DarkGemini

    @42

BH, I usually don't agree with most of your posts.

That said, that was effin' hilarious.

  • dooWOP

I wish he were a black kid - wouldn't that be something...?

  • EastRiver

Spiritof76, no I am not a Republican but I am not surprised that you need to slap labels on people that you don't agree with. It is ironic that after eight years of people attacking Bush and the neocons for seeing everything in black and white here you are doing just that. If I don't get down in the gutter with you then I must be a Republican.

Republicans want birth control to be banned

    Really?

  • Kojak

What we need is a picture of the husband to be. Hopefully he's not a slack jawed yokel.

  • babyhitler

I like how this whole VP thing is turning into an episode of Everwood. Yeah, I watched Everwood, what?

  • takethecanoli

    newsflash:

    Teenagers

    1. fuck

    2. don't listen to their parents

    3. are at peak fertility

    4. frequently misuse birth control, if they use it at all

That aside, I'm not sure the Evangelical brand of christian whackjob is against birth control. That's papist claptrap, no?

  • Anna_Merkin

It IS a private matter, which is why Mrs. Palin and the rest of the "Christian" Conservatives should understand why they should keep their laws off women's bodies. I'm happy that Bristol HAS the choice of whether to keep the child.

  • S.D.

Jacque, that would be the GOP double standard kicking in...

  • NannyState

"Isn't Baby Trig just adorable? Ooh he looks so strong! Ooh he looks so jaunty! Ooh he looks...just like John McCain! Bad war hero! bad!"

  • JacqueMehoff

now I'm hearing all these old rnc farts saying they don't care if she's under-aged, unmarried and pregnant. oh now, it's we don't care.

  • Spirit of 76

Perhaps the kid did use birth control but it failed; it's been known to happen. Perhaps Palin did teach her daughter about abstinence but she didn't listen; kids not listening to parents, also been known to happen.

If she used birth control, then that's hypocritical since Republicans want birth control to be banned. And are you saying abstinence education doesn't work? Shocker! That's not what the Republicans say.

The important thing is, the Palin family are taking responsibility, sticking together and supporting each other in a difficult time -- THAT tells me a lot about their character.

No, the important thing is she lied. That's not taking responsibility. THAT tells me a lot about her character. If it had been a Democrat doing the same thing, I guarantee you the conservatives currently running to her defense would be screaming "cover-up!"

  • metarobotic

speculation about the down's syndrome kid "has to end"? actually, doesn't it make it more likely that juno jr. is the mom, now that we know something about her character?

  • schizofriendly

    Please stop it.

    Oh please stop it...

    http://churchofeuthanasia.org/

  • ides_of_march

A lot of people making big assumptions here.

Perhaps the kid did use birth control but it failed; it's been known to happen. Perhaps Palin did teach her daughter about abstinence but she didn't listen; kids not listening to parents, also been known to happen.

The important thing is, the Palin family are taking responsibility, sticking together and supporting each other in a difficult time -- THAT tells me a lot about their character. The fact that a lot of people are trashing the Palins for political gain over this delicate matter tells me a lot about their character.

To give credit where it's due, Obama himself did come out in defence of the Palin family and showed a lot more class than some of his supporters.

  • beezbo

My bet is that Bristol was pregnant before with baby Trig. Have you seen the evidence against SP being the mom- videos, photos, story of a long flight during labor?! BP probably got pregnant again. I bet you anything she gives birth almost a month late.

  • Spirit of 76

[27] Sounds like I've found one of those rare NYC Republicans. How many of those teenage mothers on the subway do you think care about abstinence campaigns? I submit there would be a ton more of them if birth control in all forms was completely inaccessible, as many God-fearing Republicans want to make happen. Or hadn't you heard about those drugstore owners and pharmacists who refuse to carry condoms and pills for people who want to use them because it's "against their beliefs"?

  • JacqueMehoff

don't you mean Palin's abstinence policy?

17 years old. guess home schooling is good for something.

  • Spiny

EastRiver, those teenage mothers on the subway are probably uneducated and apolitical. They're the ones who suffer most from a lack of proper sex education, and if the Republicans had their way, every teenager in the country would get less sex education than they do.

Ah, Chelsea Clinton. Role model for young women. Bristol Palin? Not so much.

  • gobama

Glad to hear that Bristol "made the decision on her own" and that her parents are "proud of her decision." At least Bristol had a decision to make. Isn't this kind of decision-making and autonomy exactly what anti-choice pro-lifers want to take away from women?? As the official campaign statement says, this is a personal and private matter... I agree 100%. Maybe they should stop seeking legislation that has the government making the choice for women?

  • EastRiver

[7] No, this wouldn't have come up for Democrats because they believe in condoms, pills and other birth control.

Yes, condoms birth and the pill are 100 percent effective! Yep, all those teenage mothers you see on the subway are really tourists from the red states. Or maybe they are just Republicans because as we all know New York has millions of registered Republicans. But if you add in abortion I guess all birth control can be 100 percent effective. But I guess no Democrat has ever had an abortion because they are always so careful with condoms.

So now we are to look forward to her daughter raising her babies in the White House, eh?

Vice Presidents don't live in the White House. Do you ever get any facts right?

  • S.D.

Mr. Mel: You're assuming they knew. Me, I think they didn't.

If they did know, wouldn't they get in front of it instead of waiting a few days? I'm guessing they just got a lot of Conservatives P/O'ed.

  • Mr Mel

Sen. McCain's judgement has to be questioned. If he knew that the daughter was pregnant and still accepted the mother as a running mate, I can't imagine who his first Supreme Court Justice choice would be.

  • David McCaffredy

In the last week, I've learned what "irish twins" and "jewish lighting" means. Thanks Gothamist!

  • Barbj8

So, where is John Edwards in all this? Has he been to Alaska lately?

  • cucarachita

Can one get married at 17, anyway?

And couldn't the "baby daddy" be called a statutory rapist?

I guess Palin declined to teach her daughter about condoms! Maybe because she wasn't old enough to learn about sex?

Duh. So now we are to look forward to her daughter raising her babies in the White House, eh?

  • babyhitler

"Future Husband"- Damn! Imagine impregnating this bitch and finding out her old lady might be the next president of the United States. Shotgun wedding would be putting it mildly. I feel sorry for the dude.

  • eyekantspel

S.D., those seem like fair questions.

  • S.D.

"Anyway, I don't believe the 17 year old daughter is the one running for president. That's not stopping all those "compassionate" and "tolerant" liberals from takng cheap shots her."

O Absolutely, and I for one wish her nothing but the best in this tough time.

But, right or wrong, a lot of people will ask:

If she can't keep her own house in order, how will she handle being the VP and one heartbeat away from the Presidency??

Didn't Gov. Palin send her to "Abstinence Only" classes??

What sort of vetting did the campaign do??

Will the party "Conservatives" embrace Gov. Palin Now??

    Just asking...

  • takethecanoli

I call BS. The 5th kid is the 17yo's and now she's having Irish twins. The '5 month pregnant' story now is baloney. Watch as it's miraculously born a month late.

  • ides_of_march

"So the question now is who impregnated? Her dad? Eskimos?"

No, her future husband did. Try reading an article before commenting, you'll at least appear more intelligent.

Anyway, I don't believe the 17 year old daughter is the one running for president. That's not stopping all those "compassionate" and "tolerant" liberals from takng cheap shots her.

Just a thought to ponder: if sometimes people don't always live up to their ideals, does that mean the ideals are not valid or worth aspiring to?

  • thefacts

I don't know why Gothamist would state, unless you were being sarcastic:

"Guess that scurrilous pregnancy-conspiracy gossip that the youngest Palin (baby Trig) is actually Bristol's will have to end."

Some mighty convincing evidence that Palin covered up her daughter's bastard child by claiming it is her own baby:

    Read: http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/8/30/121350/137/486/580223

I guess it would be too incredible to do it twice within a year.

Nothing much else to do for teenagers in Alaska but fornicate those long winter nights away, if you're not into booze or drugs.

  • dooWOP

It's a ploy to steal the African American (sympathy) vote from Obama...

  • Kojak

Judging by Bristol's pictures, she processes the large hips and breasts needed to prepare her for carrying and birthing this child.

Her soon-to-be husband has chosen well.

  • cmoney

    daughters should be daughter's.

  • fakenewyorker

this is what happens when you put ideology in front of policy/common sense.

mccain really did pick a vp with perfect conservative credentials.

  • cmoney

@Roxanne: If they only believed in Cheney's daughters lesbians-only policy, this would've never happened.

  • Spirit of 76

[7] No, this wouldn't have come up for Democrats because they believe in condoms, pills and other birth control.

  • S.D.

    ...

    ...

    ...

    Roxanne, your really EEEEEvvvvvviiiillll...

    Good Job!

  • Roxanne

Wait, didn't Palin teach her daughter about Bush's abstinence policy???

  • Såkandulæredet

See this wouldn't even come up for the Democrats cuz theyd just get the baby aborted.

  • Roxanne

damn those poor people and people of color and liberals who have no sense of family values and make babies out of wedlock, uhm, wait this is a republican family and the Grandmother is the VP candidate for 2009. Self serving hypocrites.

  • S.D.

    ...

Maybe she's a Jamie Lynn Spears fan???

As per Sen. McCain: She's going to be the the Next President if he kicks the Bucket??

Wow, this news just makes me feel safer...

Just watch the GOP double standard kick in.

Jamie Lynn Spears == product of "Liberal Society'

    Gov. Palin's Daughter == OK.

  • Rocknrope

Do I see an episode of Maury in the works?

    You are.....NOT the father! Wooooohooooooooaaaa!

  • dooWOP

    Her baby daddy, silly!

  • Jen Chung

    Her boyfriend apparently.

  • Gothamist_Cynic

So the question now is who impregnated? Her dad? Eskimos?
