Locals Discuss the End of the McCarren Pool Era

200809mccarrenparkpool.jpgSaturday was the day the music died at McCarren Park Pool (well, not really), but one couldn't have asked for a better note to go out on than one provided by Sonic Youth ("Expressway to Yr Skull" was a perfect finale from the post-punk pioneers). The NY Times spoke to concertgoers and locals about the venue, which could return to its original function as soon as 2011. An elderly resident declared, “This music, very noisy. Swimming, O.K.” but one man noted, “I love this music. I come from Mexico, and in Mexico there is little music like that." And some businesses have enjoyed a 30% increase in sales on show days. The Times said hipsters claim they won't come back to swim because they think it'll be "too dirty" [insert dirty hipster joke here].

Last time I went to a city pool (Astoria Pool) was in the late 70's and a bunch of kids from the projects stood on the edge and peed right into it. That was it for me.

Public pools in this city ARE dirty, I don't care how much chlorine you put in them.

Just because people urinate in the pool doesn't make it dirty. Did you know that urine is actually sterile when it leaves the body? Unless they have a kidney disease, that pee may be the cleanest thing in the pool. Urine also kills certain kinds of bacteria.

You can even cleanse your wounds by peeing directly on them.

And did you know that shit is the face cream par excellence?

I think by "dirty" they mean there will be blacks, latinos, immigrants, middle aged people and parents with kids in the pool and we can't have that. Everyone should just be 20-30 and white or Asian or the party is sunk.

bclm,
You have absolutely NO idea what was implied, so STFU and stop introducing racism. Folks like you are getting tired.

Ever heard of E. coli, perhaps?

by "dirty" i think a lot of hipsters are worried about other hipsters fucking and doing drugs in the pool.

The city pool near me in Red Hook is very well maintained and managed. The staff does not put up with any BS and the conditions are very good. I am willing to be that the McCarren pool will be managed the same way. I know for a fact that this project is supposed to be on the fast track and some of the facilities might even be up as early as the summer of 2010. There is also a plan to keep the shows going but during the spring and fall instead. It actually looks like a really nice plan. It's nice to see that there is something old that is being revived instead of torn down and replaced with a big unimaginative piece of crap.

Oh and if the dirty hipsters don't want to swim there then that will be fine with the rest of us normal multicultural folk.

"Just because people urinate in the pool doesn't make it dirty."

As far as I'm concerned it does. Maybe you can use your toilet as a punch bowl next time you throw a party. Just remember to give your "urine is sterile" speech to your guests when you hand out the dixie cups.

Fecal matter is the real culprit. E coli, cryptosporidiosis, etc, are serious public health nuissances. You get this stuff at public pools because idiots don't change out of their underwear and shower properly before swimming. It's no fun swimming in others' shitstains.
