Last Night's Action: No Lead is Safe

Marlins 4, Mets 3: Another terrible effort by the Mets' bullpen. Mike Pelfrey lasted 6 2/3 innings and allowed two runs, but the Mets couldn't make it stand up. Ex-Met Mike Jacobs tied the game, 3-3 in the eighth, and then Aaron Heilman walked in the winning run in the ninth. That free pass was the fourth in the inning (two were intentional), but maybe Jerry Manuel would have been better off not loading the bases for a pitcher who entered the game with 35 walks in 71 innings. The Mets lead the Phillies by one game in the National League East after Philadelphia won in Chicago.

Blue Jays 7, Yankees 6: File this one under Ugly Losses. The Yankees blew a 7-2 lead, squandered a chance in the ninth and fell seven games behind Boston in the wild-card race. Robinson Cano hit a home run in the fourth inning but gave it back by making a critical error on a double-play ball in the seventh. Alex Rodriguez hit into another double play, but the ball he hit toward third base was scalded. The Yankees probably aren't making the playoffs, and it's stinkers like this that have been the reason. Damaso Marte (7.71 ERA) hasn't been such a great pickup. He took the loss. Darrell Rasner started strong but ended up allowing five runs in six innings.
