Final Yankee Ticket Prices Skyrocket

2008_08_stadium.jpgTickets for the final home games at Yankee Stadium are being resold online for upwards of $10,000. After the Yankees leave town following today's game against the Blue Jays, there's only one homestand remaining inside the House that Ruth Built. For those ten sold out games, bleacher seats alone are running over $100 a ticket. And for the final game on September 21, the cheapest seat in the house sits at $350 right now. Elsewhere in the stadium, online scalpers are charging anywhere from two to ten grand for the historic game. And in what's becoming a recurring footnote to these stadium stories, upcoming tickets for all but the final game at Shea are still available for under $30. Said one fan, "Mets fans are glad Shea's going. They don't need to say goodbye."

Until we see next year's ticket prices. Then we'll be sorry Shea is gone.

I'm not much of a sports fan, and the idea that these folks are paying huge prices for these tickets, or thousands of dollars for used stadium seats, is behavior I don't understand. One the one hand, if you have the money and this is how you want to spend it, that's your right.

Still, $10,000?? You could buy a 60" tv to watch the game on, host a party for your friends, donate $5,000 directly to a poor family and REALLY make a difference in their lives, and probably still have over $1,000 to blow on baseball memorabilia or whatever. I'd like to think that even if I had the money that would make this kind of purchase seem trivial, I would still recognize that there are better ways to spend it.

As rich as folks like Bill Gates and Warren Buffett are, I do respect that they have donated large percentages of their fortunes to trying to do something meaningful to help others, so I guess if they're the ones paying the $10k for tickets, I'll give them a pass. Anyone else, unless you're spending big money to make the world a better place in some way, if you're burning this kind of money on baseball tickets your priorities are pretty screwed up.

I've got a pair of LF bleachers for the 2nd to last game on Saturday September 20th...how about $1500 for the pair...come on it's the LAST Regular Season Saturday game in the history of the Old Yankee Stadium...and how about $1000 for a pair on Friday night...come on it's the LAST regular season Friday night game EVER at the Old Yankee Stadium...and finally 2 LF bleachers for the LAST EVER Monday night game against the White Sox...we'll say those are $750 for the pair...how else am I gonna pay for tickets next year.

Oh Shea is closing too...
