McCain Apparently Chooses Sarah Palin as VP

2008_08_palin.jpgHoping to counter Barack Obama's post-DNC bounce in the polls, John McCain will reportedly announce who he has chosen for vice president at an event in Dayton, Ohio today at 12 p.m. NBC News says Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty and Mitt Romney are out, and CNN says that "sources point to Palin as McCain's running mate" (but CNN hasn't confirmed it). Palin would be Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, who is 44 and has only two years of experience (she is also currently being investigated by the Alaska legislature for her own Troopergate). ABC News says that Palin will not be in Ohio--she's heading to the State Fair in Anchorage today. Update: Now CNN says Palin will be in Dayton as senior McCain advisers confirm she's the VP pick. Pat Buchanan says this is a huge political gamble but it will energize the Republican base (he notes she's a "Buchananite"), she's a reformer, pro-life, and a mom of five--but he acknowledges her lack of experience. The VP debate with Biden on October 2 should be really interesting. And now NY Times confirms.

Whoops. I was snorting coke off a hooker's back when I wrote that with one hand on my iPhone.

  • NannyState

@kojak, Correction: having had five kids, her vagina is indeed like her home state of Alaska -cold and heavily wooded.

  • Mr Mel

    Attn: Lisa,

    Check out the DC site.

  • EastRiver

A level of experience which, BTW, led him to vote against the Iraq War, something McCain didn't do

When did Obama vote against the war in Iraq? I'm sure he was against it but he wasn't in the Senate in 2002.

  • babyhitler

Everyone's acting like only women's minds will change. I guarantee that billy bob is like "wha? a woman? I'm staying home on election night."

  • matty

Middle America? What about every woman in this country who is of voting age?

This is a serious feminist mindfuck if there ever was one.

Also I want credit for coining the phrase "feminist mind fuck"

    Thanks.

  • Mr Mel

Happy 72nd birthday to John McCain, welcome to Sarah Palin. The Vegas odds makers are probably working overtime trying to figure out the probabilities of Sarah succeeding John. It's a bet I wouldn't take. Historically the job's a killer. I think the best case scenario is her going moose hunting with Dick Cheney.

  • Steven

How is middle America feeling right now about a women who may be the new vice president?

  • nycat

    Palin who?

  • JenChungsBaby

    A former beauty queen:

"At a NEWSWEEK forum in March 2008, Alaska governor Sarah Palin tells NEWSWEEK's Karen Breslau that she was 'never really comfortable' with her beauty-pageant past. Palin finished second in the 1984 Miss Alaska pageant."

  • matty

yeah, wtf, way hot. I half expect her to take off her glasses, let down her hair and say to the camera "I put the VICE is VICE PRESIDENT" and then start stripping.

  • esquared

    She's a hottie.

  • JenChungsBaby

Very well said, jaycjay. How can McCain now criticize Obama's level of experience? (A level of experience which, BTW, led him to vote against the Iraq War, something McCain didn't do.)

  • jaycjay

"I dare Barry to talk about experience. I dare him."

Obama never was going to bring up experience and still doesn't have to. Having McCain no longer able to use Obama's own relative lack of experience against him is enough of a gain.

  • babyhitler

I think what McCain really wanted was a black gay senator who was a post-op trannie and a single mom of 3 kids but he had to settle for Palin. "Look at Me! I'm a Maverick! Look at me!"

  • GM

She's something of the future of the Republican party - pushing for a federal ban on gay marriage, but recognizing equal rights of partners. They really couldn't take it any other way.

Alaska isn't really America, she is definitely a poor choice for VP. I wonder what role they have in mind for her? She's no Cheney, that's for sure, but I guess McCain thinks that's his area of expertise.

  • takethecanoli

so if anyone's hitting that them's DNA is no good.

So not the point. (joke shamefully stolen)

"Best things about sex with women over 40: they don't tell, they don't swell, and they're grateful as hell!"

  • JacqueMehoff

I've read somewhere she just gave birth to a baby with down's syndrome in April of this year.

so if anyone's hitting that them's DNA is no good.

  • longacre

She looks kinda like the girl who played Katherine Harris in Recount.

  • Spirit of 76

It'll be interesting to see if she can hold her own in the VP debates. Would have been even more fun if Obama had picked Hillary. HRC would have ripped Palin to shreds in a debate.

  • JenChungsBaby

Just one question: Would you be comfortable with this person being president? Not me. I expected McCain to pick a woman but not one from out of the blue.

  • dooWOP

It's almost as if the Mccain camp heeds the advice of CNN commentators, notably Dick M.

  • babyhitler

People don't seem to understand that this is indeed pandering to democrats but at the same time it's anathema to conservatives. It's push and pull for McCain. I'd be pissed off as hell right now if I were republican.

  • Ronenmars

Agree with Plk. This is absolutely transparent and I hope to god this blows up in McCain's face.

  • Dude69

#30 - So what, this will get the disgruntle Hillary supporters. How young and naive are you!?

The race is closely than you think and this could squeak McCain out.

  • Kojak

I don't know about milf. I hear her Vagina is like her home state: cold and barren.

  • longacre

Delaware and Alaska combined account for a total of 6 electoral votes! You'd think one of them would have picked a Veep from a swing state that matters, like Ohio or Missouri.

    Also, I'd hit it.

  • plk779

This is the most obviously desperate, pandering political move I've ever seen. I hope to god it backfires horribly. Bastards.

  • bagelman

she's being reduced to sexualized terms because that is why JMc chose her. i mean really, alaska?

  • Peter

But seriously, I don't like the fact that Palin is kowtowing to Alaska's oil industry in trying to deny endangered species protection to polar bears, despite the fact that they are, indeed, severely endangered.

Pro-choicers cannot expect any understanding from Palin. Late last year she refused to have an abortion after learning that her child would be mentally retarded.

  • takethecanoli

Jokes aside, she will do more for JMc than Biden does for BO.

with all the usual caveats regarding accuracy, here's her wiki:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarah_Palin

This *is* all politics is about today, and always has been, sad as it is: winning at any cost.

  • Dude69

I can see it now, if McCain is elected, starting with a late night budget session in the White House with Cindy's out of town.

  • Peter

Stop reducing her to sexualized terms.

In the spirit of equal-opportunity sexualization, we can ask whether Obama, McCain and Biden have Anteaters or German Helmets :)

  • Nishanna

Stop reducing her to sexualized terms. Who ever she is, how ever young and inexperienced she is, she doesn't deserve it. American politics can't evolve if this is all we can talk about. Be better than that.

  • Mr Mel

She's a Tina Fey lookalike and she's going to be on the Weekend News a lot.

  • HughGass

How bout a pic from the neck down. What's she sportin' under the blazer?

  • Peter

What I want to know is whether she's shaved.

  • angry_mariner

It should be noted that she is currently a VPCILF, and will only be a VPILF in Jan '09 if she wins.

  • EastRiver

    Don't underestimate flyover rubes

Maybe if you stopped insulting them they would be more inclined to vote the way you want them too. Just sayin'

  • bagelman

technically, she's still a gilf, and hopefully, she'll never be a vpilf.

  • takethecanoli

Perfect setup for single McCain term followed by HRC redeux, same as Bush 1.

He may pull it off. Don't underestimate flyover rubes combined with spurned HRC loyalist spite.

The VP debates will be a laugh riot. "I knew Jack Kennedy...you're no Jack Kennedy"

    VPILF....gold!

  • eyekantspel

    It's definitely a strange choice.

  • JRod5417

Interesting pick by McCain considering she endorsed Obama's proposed energy policy earlier this month.

  • Rocknrope

    Um, #12, Bush/Quayle won, remember?

  • takethecanoli

    He got the PUMA vote.

  • dr zippy

On par with Bush #1's choice of Dan Quayle. Palin's a former mayor of a small town and new mayor of a state with a small population. No way she knows much about foreign policy or national security. Is this someone we want to be a heartbeat away from the presidency?

  • Toby von Meistersinger

So the Washington Insider chooses an Alaskan woman to counter the Chicago Politician and the Washington Insider on the other side. There is much potential for comedy gold here, and that is about it.

  • salad

Might I add that, inversely, Biden looks more like the typical White-guy-running-for-president-in-the-movies than any other president or vice president in the history of the world...This Election Oh-Eight is just killing me to death.

  • salad

McCain: I'm hip, i can play the minority card, too...I'm in like Reagynn.

  • jack9

"That's VP debate with Biden on October 2 should be really interesting."

    "That's VP debate"??

  • JRod5417

NY Times is officially confirming that Palin the GOP VP pick.

  • dooWOP

haha With a photo like that you'd think she did SNL skits instead...

  • EastRiver

This is a good pick if you believe the theory that McCain doesn't really care if he wins. I've read several pundits say 2008 was all about payback for 2000 and that all he wanted was the nomination. They compared him to Dole in 1996.

  • babyhitler

She's like a combination of all the worse qualities of Hilary and Obama. I feel like this is intended to steal Hilary votes from Obama but how the hell is this gonna go over with the repubs? This smells of desperation and grasping at straws.

  • Jen Chung

    @thenamesdave, VPILF is brilliant.

  • David

Palin would be a horrible pick. She doesn't excite the crazies (especially being a closet gay rights supporter), and she has literally zero experience. Under an ethics cloud in Alaska, too.

    Just because you're a VPILF, doesn't mean you're a shrewd political choice.
