Last Night's Action: Are the Yankees Dead Yet?

2006_04_syankeeslogo.jpg

  • Yankees 3, Red Sox 2: To answer the above question: Probably. But for one game -- the last regular-season contest between New York and Boston at Yankee Stadium -- the Yankees showed signs of life. Mike Mussina didn't get his 17th win -- 20 is looking less likely now -- but Jason Giambi picked up his team. He hit a pinch-hit, game-tying, two-run homer in the seventh inning. In the ninth, against Boston closer Jonathan Papelbon, Giambi snapped the 2-2 tie he created.

The Yankees don't have much time to fool around. They are six games behind Boston in the wild-card race with 29 left on the schedule. That doesn't leave much room for error -- not every team being chased is the 2007 Mets. But with Boston struggling with almost as many injuries as the Yankees, stranger things have happened. The next challenge is a three-game series against the Blue Jays, who have managed to keep the Yankees' bats quiet this season.

  • At the U.S. Open on Thursday, No. 1 seed Ana Ivanovic is gone. She lost 188th-ranked Julie Coin. Serena Williams and Rafael Nadal had no problems. In action Friday: Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Lindsey Davenport and Andy Roddick.

Yes the Yankees are dead. Even Hank Steinbrenner said they suck.

What about NFL scores? WNBA?

They aren't just chasing Boston, they have to also play better than the Twins AND White Sox.

Burnett vs. Pavano tonight. Parrish vs. Rasner Saturday. Halladay vs. Pettitte Sunday...

If they continue to hit the way they have all year against Burnett and Halladay, this series with Toronto could very well be it. They need to sweep to stay alive. 2 of 3 is just treading water at this point, not enough. Obviously, another series loss, to anyone, and they are done. Unless of course they can go on a 10+ game winning streak... Don't hold your breath.

Maybe they'd be in better shape if Derek Jeter weren't so crappy these days.

It's not like they are going to win the World Series or even the A.L. pennant. I would think fans would be tired of watching the Yankees lose in the playoffs year after year. I know in the past Yankee management has said their goal every year is to go out and win the World Series. Maybe they should be a little more like the Red or Sox or Angels current management where the goal seems to be that one or two championships a decade is a worthy goal.

Um. Jeter is hitting like .430 in the last 15 games.
