Obama Wins Democratic Nomination; Bill Clinton Says Obama is "Ready to Lead America"

The Democratic Party nominated Barack Obama as its 2008 presidential candidate, making him the first African-American presidential nominee in a major political party.

He won the nomination in an emotional moment during the roll call: After New Mexico yielded its place to Illinois during the alphabetical-by-state roll call, Illinois then yielded its place to New York. In the middle of the New York delegation--surrounded by Governor David Paterson, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, Senator Charles Schumer, and Attorney General Andrew Cuomo--Senator Hillary Clinton released her delegates and called for Obama's nomination by acclamation (video below)

"On behalf of the great state of New York, with appreciation for the spirit and dedication of all who are gathered here, with eyes firmly fixed on the future, with the spirit of unity ... let's declare all together with one voice right here and right now that Barack Obama is our candidate and he will be our president."
Later in the evening, after a 3 1/2-minute standing ovation, former President Bill Clinton endorsed Obama and his running mate forcefully and personally:
Last night Hillary told us in no uncertain terms that she is going to do everything she can to elect Barack Obama. That makes two of us...

Clearly, the job of the next President is to rebuild the American Dream and restore America's standing in the world... With Joe Biden's experience and wisdom, supporting Barack Obama's proven understanding, insight and good instincts, America will have the national security leadership we need... Barack Obama is ready to lead America and restore American leadership in the world. Ready to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States. Barack Obama is ready to be president of the United States.

Newsweek's Howard Fineman called it "masterful" and that it was "like watching Michael Jordan in his prime." Here's a transcript and video is after the jump.

The vice presidential candidate Joe Biden used his speech (transcript; video below) to attack McCain, listing a number of issues where "Again and again, John McCain has been wrong, and Barack Obama was right." Afterwards, a surprise guest--Obama himself--appeared. He said Hillary Clinton "rocked the house last night" and thanked President Clinton, saying he reminded everyone of what it's like when you've "got a president who puts people first." But the presidential nominee's big speech will be his acceptance speech tomorrow at Invesco Mile HIgh Stadium.

I didn't think Biden's speech was that good--his delivery was off. Also, it's hard following Bill Clinton, who still is an amazing speaker.

last night made up for the last few lackluster days. tonight at the stadium will be nuts.

The Clintons never said they endorsed Barack Hussein Obama LOUD enough so they don't count.

Biden Sucked! Obama Biden will find Osama Bin Laden.

Joe Biden: a thick slice of 100% whole milk American processed cheese.

I find it hard to believe that the DNC let the Clintons eclipse their fucking presidential candidate in this thing.

Dear Clintons: Go away.

It was so tight when Obama showed up - like the WWE sans the entrance music.

Bill Clinton got what he came there for- a sloppy, prime-time lap dance of shreaks and applause. Which will be tarted up and resold as "unity."

nice #7. it woudl have been great if they had a sound effect of glass breaking, and then queued the fog machine with obama coming out and doing the ray lewis dance. that would be mad black

If Obama had entrance music (which would rule) what would it be?

Straight outta hawaii, crazy motherfucker named Obama
From the gang called Niggaz With Attitudes
When I'm called off, I got a sawed off
Squeeze the trigger, and bodies are hauled off

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss...
At least the dems are nice enough to kiss you before they fuck you.
What's worse? A man who blatantly lies to you so badly that he can hardly keep a straight face, or the one that does it so well he could sell ice to eskimos?

"I find it hard to believe that the DNC let the Clintons eclipse their fucking presidential candidate in this thing."

Tonight is the candidate's night, and he will address 75,000+ people. The Clintons haven't eclipsed anyone. Obama gave them a venue for their swan song.

as opposed to republicans, which do what exactly, takethecanoli?

kids, stay in school...

I'm surprised no one took Biden's presidential ticket seriously. As for Obama, I still don't trust him - now, it has nothing to do with his political colleagues Kwame Kilpatrick or Sharpe James.

GOP is the former...the bad liar.

Did you even read his statement or did you just reflexively fire off a retort? It seems pretty clear what he was saying.

Obama's theme song:
"one Nation Under a Groove"

Would like to see him rolling in with a slight limp to 'The Boss' by James Brown

Nice speeches! We posted MP3 highlights from Clinton's and Biden's.

Omglol @ "straight outta hawaii"

"I find it hard to believe that the DNC let the Clintons eclipse their fucking presidential candidate in this thing."

Unlike previous primary seasons where one candidate ran away with most of the states, this year's primaries were hotly contested and the party was left with a great divide. There is no way they could pull off the convention without letting the Clintons sing a farewell song and give their blessings to Obama on the biggest national stage. It will be interesting to see if the Clintons will continue to lend their support loud and clear.

"now, it has nothing to do with his political colleagues Kwame Kilpatrick or Sharpe James."

The listed individuals appear to be "colleagues" of Obama simply because they share a party and they share a skin color. It's quite suspicious that you also happened to choose two "colleagues" who have been indicted (one of whom was convicted)....

dooWOP is a ridiculous, bigoted troll who probably gets his/her jollies from instigating conflict because that's the only way that he/she gets attention in life. It must be a sad, angry existence.

EastRiver, the omission sent a message to me that didn't rest within what was written.

But you're too esoteric and smug to give a fuck regardless.
