Hillary Clinton Says Barack Obama "Must Be Our President"

After a bitter primary season, Hillary Clinton gave a rousing and passionate speech in support of presidential candidate Barack Obama during the second night of the Democratic Convention. She said she was a "proud supporter of Barack Obama" and "Barack Obama is my candidate, and he must be our president."

Clinton, who remembered staunch surrogate Representative Stephanie Tubbs and thanked numerous people--especially her "sisterhood of the traveling pantsuits"-- articulated why Obama had her vote and asked her supporters, "I want you to ask yourselves: Were you in this campaign just for me?...Whether you voted for me, or you voted for Barack, the time is now to unite as a single party with a single purpose. We are on the same team, and none of us can sit on the sidelines." She also got the crowd going with a call-and-response type questioning of whether they wanted "four more years of the last eight years" (the audience responded "No!").

That is our duty, to build that bright future, to teach our children that in America there is no chasm too deep, no barrier too great, no ceiling too high, for all who work hard, who keep going, have faith in God, in our country, and in each other. That’s our mission, Democrats. Let’s elect Barack Obama.”
The NY Times noted that former President Bill Clinton looked on "tenderly" and tears were in the eyes of her supporters. And perhaps more powerfully, when a Times reporter asked a Clinton fan if she would vote for Obama, she replied, “Absolutely–she just told us to, didn’t she?” Here is the full transcript of her speech; video is below.

Obama, who watched her speech from Billings, Montana, said he thought she was "outstanding." He loved the "No way, no how, no McCain" line. Obama will be heading to Denver tomorrow, when his VP pick Joe Biden speaks; he will speak on Thursday night.

Hopefully, Clinton will be President in a few years.

It will be like getting two Presidents, getting advice from one who served for two terms.

Surely Bush got advice from Bush

If you believe Hillary really wants Obama to win then meet me by the Brooklyn Bridge tomorrow and bring your check book, have I got a bargain for you.

I love how she's able to shout-out her "sisterhood of the traveling pantsuits," but if Obama were to thank his "brothers" or "sisters" for their support his political career would be pretty much over. Glass cieling indeed.

Hopefully, Clinton will be President in a few years.

Good God, I hope not.

Is it just me or has the DNC managed to turn itself into a Hillary concession party rather than an Obama nomination party?

Good God get this woman OUT of the picture!

Since when did losers get to speak at the convention?

"Surely Bush got advice from Bush"

He may have , but he didn't heed it. It almost appears as if he he was out to get his old man.

Every time I see Obama Biden I can't help but initially think Osama Bin Laden. I am not joking.

Anyone else have this problem?

The Clintons aren't attaching themselves to Obama. They want us to believe that they have but Hillary is a brand and her brand equity was what was at stake with this speech. By elevating Obama, she has elevated her brand. The Clintons are finding new ways to feast at every table.

Every time I see Obama Biden I can't help but initially think Osama Bin Laden. I am not joking.

Anyone else have this problem?

only if you're a stupid conservative white southerner/midwesterner.

Whether the Obama supporters like it or not, he ain't winning anything without the backing of Hill's votes in most of the working class swing states. The Clintons aren't going away, even if Obama wins they will be a huge influence in the Democratic party and the government.

Also the race is going to be much much closer than the naive Obama supporters used to think, they will need the Clintons behind them. Obama now needs to start providing some solid plans for the country instead of more fluff rhetorics.

Party conventions are such a joke. False unity, self-congratulatory speeches, and a whole lotta pots calling the kettle black.

Kucinich's speech was ridiculous:

http://thepeoplewithpower.blogspot.com/2008/08/at-at-convention.html

I think this Convention has illustrated what many around the Democratic Party have long known: that the Clintons still have a very strong hold on the Party. Sen. Clinton delivered a solid speech that was the minimum expected of a Party loyalist seeking to keep her political future alive. Let's be clear: HRC does not expect Obama to win this Fall and is making plans for a 2012 run. She is backed by a strong following that is nearly maniacal about its support.

The Obama campaign has apparently made the bet that it could build a new coalition beyond the Democratic Party that didn't require submission to the Clinton power wing. Clinton surrogates like Carville and Begala are certainly making them pay for this gambit with each television appearance that they make - as they are the ones with the most to lose from a Clinton decline. The Party has bemoaned the absence of Bill Clinton ever since he left office and has failed to deliver another leader with the same level of broad support that he enjoyed - because of, or in spite of the presence of the Clintons. Obama was supposed to be that leader, but he was savaged by the Clintons during the primary season in a way that Bill Clinton never was. The Clintons were responsible for this fratricide. Given this, one might wonder whether the Clinton Presidency was an aberration and that the Democratic Party truly is incapable of fielding a non-Clinton candidate who can win - and whether that is partly a result of Bill Clinton's success. No different that any other organization with a "star" system.

I guess we'll see whether the calculation made by Obama will be worthwhile. Some might argue that he underestimated the power/influence of the Clintons. I hope not, for the sake of our country's future.

I think this sums up the mindlessness of many of Hillary's supporters:

"...when a Times reporter asked a Clinton fan if she would vote for Obama, she replied, “Absolutely–she just told us to, didn’t she?”

so if Hillary had told everyone to jump off a bridge and kill themselves because she had lost the primary...I wonder how many of her supporters would do it?

There's no way I can vote for Obama. Obama voted in favor of the telecommunications companies immunity law in July. This is the law that gives legal immunity for the phone companies that cooperated in the National Security Agency wiretapping program.

Hi Gothamist Cynic. Thanks for playing. Remember your response when you start to see this played out in the media. It is not that hard of a slip up.

I am not what you describe as I am an independent and nonpartisan. Although the person I linked to is from Texas so maybe you are right!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Wilson_(politician)

Obama should have chosen Hillary. He will regret it on Wednesday Nov 5th.

This is the law that gives legal immunity for the phone companies that cooperated in the National Security Agency wiretapping program.

Why should the telecoms be on the hook for something the government did? Could it be so the trial lawyers could make boatloads of money suing deep pockets?

EastRiver, you're assuming that this person might have voted for Obama in the first place. People who say, "there is no way that I could vote for..." have generally made up their minds and seek any feeble excuse to support their viewpoint.

As an aside, has anyone yet seen the Bill Clinton video where he talks about "Candidate X and Candidate Y?"

"Suppose you're a voter, and you've got candidate X and candidate Y. Candidate X agrees with you on everything, but you don't think that candidate can deliver on anything at all. Candidate Y you agree with on about half the issues, but he can deliver. Which candidate are you going to vote for?"

This guy is unbelievable.

You would think with the kind of confidence she displayed last night that she were still in the running. I think the American public screwed up yet again - first with George W and now with Osama.

Get Barack get off the goddamn couch already? These speeches are putting Americans to sleep...

I admit Hillary was great last night but still all style, no substance.

"I think this sums up the mindlessness of many of Hillary's supporters:

Thank you, aa77, I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds that quote more a hell of a lot more creepy than touching...

"Obama was supposed to be that leader, but he was savaged by the Clintons during the primary season in a way that Bill Clinton never was."

Your kidding, right? You don't think Bill Clintion was savaged during the 1992 primary season? Marijuana? Jennifer Flowers? etc. How soon people forget that smear politics is a long revered tactic of choice during the primaries. If anything Obama had it too easy and now that McCain and the right wing are heading the attack, he is unable to strongly defend himself and point it back to the GOP. JHe has to step it up if he

Oops, let me finish that last sentence. Obama needs to step up the rhetoric and the substance if he expects to win the election.

BTW- Hill's speech was OK, but did absolutely nothing to boost Obama in a substantive matter. Another missed opportunity for the Dems.

I make that same connection in my mind, too-- "Obama Biden"/"Osama Bin Laden"!

And yes, hi there "Gothamist Cynic". Thank goodness there is finally a CYNIC around here! And thank goodness you identified yourself as such. I now know where to look for hilarious cynical remarks.

"Surely Bush got advice from Bush"

I wouldn't bet on it:

Did Mr. Bush ask his father for any advice? “I asked the president about this. And President Bush said, ‘Well, no,’ and then he got defensive about it,” says Woodward. “Then he said something that really struck me. He said of his father, ‘He is the wrong father to appeal to for advice. The wrong father to go to, to appeal to in terms of strength.’ And then he said, ‘There's a higher Father that I appeal to.’"

Yet no one connects the rhyme of John McCain with Saddam Hussein.

HUMMM

Word, Matty - I was very surprised that she talked about her failed campaign for so long. Yeah, it's great that she got so far and all, but this party isn't for her!

Also, what was up with the closing benediction?! Is there always prayer at these things?

user-pic

Agree with aa77 and GiuliaPines. Hillary supporters shouldn't be getting behind Obama because "she told them to," they should be getting behind Obama because his policy views are basically the same as Hillary's.

blablanyc:

So who will you vote for? Is the telecom bill the only issue you use to decide who you support in the election?

I don't give a flying fuck about any of the politics this election. Obama can say he's re-initiating Prima Noctes for all I care and McCain can say that ben-gay is a universal right it doesn't matter. I'm voting for Obama for REVENGE! When those repubs see a black prez it's gonna be a thousandfold worse feeling than when I was sick to my stomache when Bush got voted in twice. FUCK THEM! And average joe black people are gonna feel the shame of a lifetime when Obama wins. Obama will be "THAT GUY" to them. You know, the guy, that your mother always compared yourself too and said why can't you be more like him. the seething jealousy is gonna be painful. I hope they finally feel the burden of high expectations that everyone else has felt.

I have to admit that I'm embarrassed for my "fellow" women, if they need Hillary to tell them who to vote for. They've simply replaced the Man with the Woman, as far as who they serve. Women need to let go of the need to adore a Signifier, and start signifying in their own lives. As long as women are acting like children, they're going to only make 77 cents on the dollar, and whine about it instead of progressing.

Hillary tried to pass herself off as some kind of ersatz man to get the nomination: voting for the war, trying to act tough. She couldn't even really explain herself.

So no, Hillary was not the electable candidate. America hates women more than America hates black people. Women's rights is still a big joke to most of America. Equal rights is for men, not women. If Barack was a woman AND black and had run against Hillary, what do you think would have happened? No, America is not ready for a woman president.

I think some people are making too much of one out-of-context quote from one single Hillary supporter..

i am embarrassed for you baby hitler. your view on life is sad and disturbing to say the least. it was the republicans who nominated a black woman as secretary of state, it is the republicans that nominated a black supreme court justice. the racial tensions that existed 30 years ago are largely a thing of the past. this country has been strong enough to move on from those sad times and the few that still feel that way are outcasts.

america is ready for more then you people give it credit for. america is ready for a woman president, just not that woman.

Obama will be "THAT GUY" to them.

haha True dat, true dat. Pimp daddy wannabees - take note!

That is one hideous outfit she had on. Bright orange? Ugh.

is this news?

just kidding... she should have been the VP (then we might have had a shot at winning)

#36- "the racial tensions that existed 30 years ago are largely a thing of the past" Man, it must be nice to live on a rainbow while riding unicorns all day.

When did she vomit up acid, threaten the current President's life and invite Al Qeadea to open up shop in the US?

That is one hideous outfit she had on. Bright orange? Ugh.

You haven't heard? DWI....time to pick garbage up in the median.

Actually, she is kind of shaped like a traffic cone.

I've seen and read critical comments re: Hillary's speech and it confounds me. She was brilliant and offered an emphatic endorsement of Obama. I must have watched a different speech.

I think it was no accident she discussed women's suffrage and seemlessly linked it to the Underground Railroad and Harriet Tubman, connecting a woman candidate to a black candidate in the process.

Clarification for ma bell:

1. A Democrat nominated the 1st black supreme court justice.

2. Condi Rice contributed to the worst foreign policy in US History. That's not a plus for the GOP.

baby hitler your race dividing rhetoric is what is a thing of the past. i am white, yes. i have never had a rascist thought in my life. nor have any of the people i associate myself with. are there backwoods hicks in the south that still thrive on that bullshit? yeah sure but they are the fools. a black man is about to be elected president of the united states and all you can talk about is how rascist this country is.

mjg the topic was rascism. i didn't say the republicans nominated the first black justice, nor did i say condi's policies were good. simply noting that the republicans are the one's that have blacks involved in their politics. other than obama, there hasn't been a prominent black democrat in some time.

Since when did losers get to speak at the convention?

Since those dimwitted Hilary supporters said they would vote for McCain over Obama. Who the feck are these people? Oh yeah, bitter, waspy libs, I forgot.

#44 "I've never had a racist thought in my life"

Never ever? Not even in your deepest darkest thoughts? Not even when you were really pissed off at someone of another race? Not even after 9/11? Maybe you should be running for president.

#44- you sound pretty racist to me. Why can't you tolerate my intolerance?

ma bell...

Maxine Waters, Charles B. Rangel, Eleanor Holmes Norton, John Lewis, Stephanie Tubbs-Jones (RIP) Sheila Jackson-Lee, John Conyers, Jr., James E. Clyburn.

maxine waters? are we talking of a representative? and a commie nontheless? hardly as prominent as colin powell, condi, or clarence thomas. and charles rangel? come on gimme a break. these aren't prominent politicians

As of now Pres. Obama still in his way of making the US economy back to its stability. But did you know that banks charges, for late fees, overdrafts, ATM fees, and the like, is going up? That’s why as early as now we should learn to balance our checkbooks. Because if you don't take steps in balancing your checkbook, it may results in bad shape, and if you do, it would require you from needing a cash advance. Also, be aware that bank these days is looking to sting people with overdraft fees, so they can make up for their shoddy investments. You want them to get more of your money? Gee, I don’t think so! It would be almost worth a cash advance to figure out how to properly balance your checkbook. Hence, be more aware and always keep on mind that whatever your decisions there is an opposite reaction it may be bad or good ones.
