Last Night's Action: Pelfrey Picks Up Mets

Mets 9, Astros 1: Houston has been a pesky opponent for the Mets all season, but Mike Pelfrey knew how to handle the Astros. He threw his second straight complete game -- he lost the shutout in the ninth -- as the Mets salvaged a split of the four-game series. That's important momentum for a team that goes into a critical three-game series against the Phillies this week. Carlos Delgado homered not once but twice.

The news wasn't all good, however. John Maine went back on the disabled list with a bone spur in his shoulder, and Luis Castillo came back. His return consisted of an 0-for-3 performance with a walk. Who's going to replace Maine's ability to go five or so capable innings? That could determine the Mets' chances of winning the division.
Across that long walkway in Flushing, the U.S. Open had its first night session. Jelena Jankovic won on Ashe Stadium court following a display of 40 years of champions. James Blake of Yonkers followed that up by beating fellow American Donald Young in five sets.
