Last Night's Action: More of the Same

  • Astros 6, Mets 4: The Mets haven't been losing that much lately, but, when they have, it has been in frustrating ways. In this one, the Mets blew leads of 3-0 and 4-3 then watched in the 10th inning as Brad Ausmus (!) and Darin Erstad went deep of Pedro Feliciano. Homers happen, yes, but Ausmus has a .310 slugging average this season and a .345 mark for his career. Erstad's days as a productive player are long gone. Oliver Perez put forth another solid outing, though he can't blame the bullpen; he squandered the leads the Mets gave him.

  • Yankees 8, Orioles 7: The Yankees too blew a lead (7-2), but at least they have Mariano Rivera at the back end of the bullpen. Robinson Cano, who has shown some signs of life since best friend Melky Cabrera got demoted to the Minor Leagues, hit a tiebreaking home run. The Yankees have Monday off but play the Red Sox for three games starting Tuesday. They are five back in the wild-card chase and probably need to take two of three to extend their flickering hopes.

  • Red Bulls 3, Dynamo 0: Good news comes in threes for the Red Bulls. Three goals Sunday, three straight wins and three straight games with a goal for Mike Magee.

These updates are almost as insufferable as Tim McCarver.

Yankees have to sweep the Red Sox for any chance at a wild card. 2 out of 3 is not enough when it's almost the last month of baseball, you're at home, and only picking up a game compared to 3 with a sweep.
