Making The Call: The Greatest Year In Sports

The end of the year is always overloaded with tributes to how great the past year has been. Luckily in 2008, we don’t have to wait. We can come right out and say that 2008 has been the greatest year in sports.

Think about all we have seen so far. We had the Ice Bowl 2 and then the greatest upset in Super Bowl history when the Giants defeated the Patriots. Kansas shocked Memphis in overtime to win the NCAA’s in March while Pat Summit led her Tennessee team to the championship for the 8th time.

We have seen Tiger Woods do the impossible, absolutely willing himself to win the US Open in an 18-hole playoff despite a knee that needed surgery. Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal gave us the greatest tennis match in history at Wimbledon while the Williams’ sisters both overcame lower seeds than usual to meet in the final. The Lakers and Celtics resumed basketball’s oldest rivalry and the Red Wings won their 11th Stanley Cup. Baseball provided us with a classic All-Star Game in a perfect setting with the largest gathering of Hall of Famers ever.

Then we have the Olympics which have provided us with two of the greatest individual performances ever. Michael Phelps and his eight gold medal wins were thrilling to watch. Usain Bolt not only won the 100 and 200-meter dashes, but he did both in record time, even with his celebrations before crossing the finish line.

And, we have four months left to see what else 2008 has in store for us. We have the Ryder Cup, baseball playoffs, the entire football season and the New York Marathon. Based on what we have seen so far, sports fans better pay attention.

nah. 2098. When the Knicks finally win. Sure, We'll all be dead then and the Knicks will be owned by the Chinese and will be called the Paneast Knicks. But that'll be the greatest year in sports.
