Exonerated Central Park Jogger Teens Suing the City

2008_08_jogger1.jpgThe five teenagers once accused of rape in the Central Park Jogger case are planning to sue the city for $50 million each. The five were released from prison in 2002 after the DNA of Matias Reyes was found at the scene of the crime and Reyes confessed. A 2003 NYPD report though still says that the five men "most likely" were involved with the crime. The teenagers had previously confessed to the 1989 rape and their lawyer Roger Wareham says that the suit will uncover how "diabolically" detectives worked to force it out of them. "If the city refuses to settle, we are going to relive the whole racial climate of 1989," said Wareham.

Time to take out the old broom handle for these guys.

are you going to take it out of your ass canoli? won't you miss it?

Wait, why did they confess if they weren't guilty -- cause they were!

Yeah, and so did Reyes (confess). You know they make people confess against their better judgement.

(I mean, at least Reyes' confession is backed up by the evidence. Which isn't the case for those others.)

maybe they shouldn't have gone "wilding." fuck those animals.

sharpton, is that you waddling to the podium?

Were they with Reyes there in the park hanging out? Were they all part of the same posse?

It makes sense for the law to come down very hard on everyone even minimally part of this crime in order to discourage other similar crimes. Sending a message.

If they didn't do it but were part of the same posse, why didn't at least one of them rat out Reyes when they knew they were going up the river?

Give them a million to be split among all five. Then, sit back and watch as they blow it on drugs and booze.

I guess the $50 mil each is for lost wages while incarcerated. Another example of why lawyers should be serving time as well as those they defend.

with the exception of one defendant, they all served 5-6 years in prison and released.

Yusef Salaam 5.5 yrs

Kevin Richardson 5.5 yrs

Antron McCray 6 yrs

Raymond Santana 5yrs

Korey Wise 11.5 yrs

I can't wait until that quintet solves world hunger or finds a breakthrough in cancer treatment.

sue this bitch for all she's got and then some.
sue her and the city again and again.

"If the city refuses to settle, we are going to relive the whole racial climate of 1989,"

That would be the racial climate where guys from Harlem thought they could go wilding on white women in Central Park without consequences? That climate?

Just great, just because she wasn't gang raped the other dudes are clean as driven snow.

Who is she kidding? It was probably the best she ever got and will ever get pffttt...

"Lawyers for the five Harlem teenagers who were imprisoned and later exonerated of the 1989 rape of the Central Park jogger prepared to start a civil case against the city for millions in compensation and punitive damages."

soooo....assuming they were not put in jail...they would have led lives as umm...food delivery boys?

"If the city refuses to settle, we are going to relive the whole racial climate of 1989,"

you know the city wont settle. they are just in it for the money. let me get my card board and marker so i can make a sign to protest..ummm..for the rights of rapists! yes...protest for the rights of rapists! it all makes sense now!

Where's spearchucker now that we need him?

Offer them $50 million -in 1989 dollars (about $32 million), and then let the victim of that horrible attack have it.

no need, the gang's all here.

No matter how much money they get, they still lost a big chunk of their teenage years.

If they are really innocent and were coerced, it is especially sad that the police will go unpunished.

What they must realize is that regardless of how high profile a crime is and how much pressure exists to solve it - the REAL criminal escapes when there is a miscarriage of justice

I think the police have enough bullets for all of the little bastards even if it take them over fifty rounds for each.

Some of these suspects not only confessed to police, but confessed to friends and family members in monitored phone calls from jail. There was indeed physical evidence linking some of these suspects to the crime (victim's blood on their underwear etc.). The rule of law cannot give them what they deserve, but it will be another shame on the city if they are allowed to profit from their crimes.

"If the city refuses to settle, we are going to relive the whole racial climate of 1989"

Why is there a need to add strong tags to a line like this in the article? Is there any doubt that the racist commenters aren't going to be driven to this one fast enough?

It's sad to see all the outrageously violent responses here and on the gothamist in general.
