Mayor Has Secret Meetings with Media Moguls on 3rd Term

2008_07_bloopater.jpgInstead of courting New York City voters with a ballot initiative or City Council with legislature to overturn term limits, Mayor Bloomberg first pitched the idea to another group: the owners of the three largest newspapers in New York. In what sounds like a storyline from The West Wing, the NY Times reports that Bloomberg has had private discussions with Rupert Murdoch (NY Post), Mortimer Zuckerman (NY Daily News), and Arthur Sulzberger Jr. (NY Times) about their respective newspapers' possible stances on a term limit overhaul. The Times source said that all three owners were open to the idea. "So it would be a clean sweep," the source told the paper. City business leaders like the newspaper owners were the ones who got the ball rolling on talk of finding a way for the mayor to remain in office for another four years.

Elsewhere yesterday, Governor Paterson publicly stated that he thinks a third Bloomberg term is "a great idea." Paterson was particularly gushy when it came to Mayor Mike's political ambitions adding, "There was a time he wanted to run for President. That wouldn't have been a bad idea, either." Paterson might be eager to endorse Bloomberg to stick around City Hall because it would keep the mayor from becoming an opponent to the governor in the 2010 election for the state house. Bloomberg has been speculated to be a possible candidate in that race as well and leads Paterson in polls of a potential square off.

As for the mayor, yesterday he certainly sounded like someone who doesn't want to go anywhere. After revealing Thursday for the first time that he wouldn't be against an extension of term limits, he continued to question just how long is too long for a mayor to be in office during his weekly radio program. He even revealed that he had discussed the idea with "one of the great mayors of this country" who he said would also be forced out by term limits, but refused to name. When asked if a third term was an option, Bloomberg responded, "Being mayor is the best job."

It's like the universe is conspiring against me. Am I the only one who doesn't want a third term. And I don't want some career politico/populist to take office either. So what if Richard Parsons said "no thanks". Has anyone asked his fellow billionaires Carl Icahn or David H. Koch.

BTW Paterson only wants to keep Bloomberg out or the gubernatorial race. Albany is where Mike belongs.

you can still vote 15 months from now, nobody can conspire against that!

I agree with #2. Paterson is not stupid - he knows Mike would be enticed to move upstate if he can't continue as mayor.

I think Bloomberg would be an ideal governor given his financial intelligence (Lord knows that NY is desperate for someone to get our finances in good order). That said, even the best and brightest will have a hard time fixing our mess until Sheldon Silver gets knocked out of office.

#1 and #4 agreed.

The people have spoken twice against term limits. Why am I not surprised the billionaires want him for another term?

Perfect example of what's going on in the city nowadays. Ignore the regular folk and listen to the billionaire folk.

I'd love to see Bloomberg get this term limit thing eliminated and then lose to Giuliani in an election.

No, no and NO! No special deals for billionaires. But I wouldn't like him even if he weren't a billionaire. Enough already.

sheeple SPEAK UP AND SPEAK OUT!!!!!

Support another candidate now and keep speaking up, I know they all suck but we have to prevent this end around that napoleon is trying to pull over our eyes!

not my favorite guy, but at least weiner (hahaha) is born and bred, quinn is a thief and self serving activist, i think the supermarket guy is running, and thompson too.

Just stop the midget from boston from fucking up this city any further. he's such a two faced little prick; back in the 80's when he was gorging himself on wall street, he was fucking anything he could buy all the while snorting and smoking every night at regines. he's a self righteous little douchebag and needs to be sent packing.

i thought a billionaire (Ronald Lauder) was the driving force behind term limits in NYC...

although, i agree, 2 terms of bloomberg is enough.

Yes, the superrich are really getting behind Bloomie. Two terms is enough. Term limits prevent corruption - completely necessary in New York (for council members, too). Unless Paterson surprises us (and giving big pay raises to campaign contributors does not), MB definitely has the early lead and financial edge for guv.

i'm sure the city council will back this too as they've been trying to ram the end of term limits down the peoples throats for years and losing every time. they would love nothing more than to keep their cushy part time 6 figure jobs in return for absolutely no valuable contributions to the city.

Knee-jerk reactions from a bunch of hipsters to be against "the man".

The losers who are in the mix for 2009 will run this City into the ground. I can't believe smbdy mentioned Weiner, who is not smart enough to run the biggest City in the country. Not even close. The guy is awful and would be a terrible mayor.

The other day Richard D Parsons, the chairman of Time Warner, was exclaiming his desire to have Bloomberg in for a third term. The term limit was for put in place for a reason. Get over it Bloomberg.

bloomie has 80% approval ratings. it's funny how people on this board hate the average joe. They think that 1) "other" people are too dumb to have a legitimate opinion of bloomie and 2) that "other" people should have their right to vote subordinated to term limits.

for bloomie haters, name the mayor from history that would have deserved your vote.

doesn't matter if bloomberg is the best thing since sliced bread (i think he's been a decent mayor overall), if it also opens the door to our esteemed city councilors also getting rid of their term limits... they are the worst of the worst and need to go.

NYC needs a sucessor to Bloomberg, third term or not. That should be the focus of everyone's attention. Who will step up and do Bloomie one better?

it's funny how people on this board hate the average joe.

New to the Internet?

#15: agreed. Gotta keep term limits to prevent career city council deadweights. I'm a Bloomberg fan but the cost of overturning term limits definitely outweighs any benefits of a third term.

Fuck Bloomberg! Let him run for mayor of Boston.

I'm torn on this issue. I think that Bloomberg has been a great mayor. However, to flip on this issue when he clearly in the past stated his support for term limits would be bad. I don't see any qualified candidates for 2009, but that doesn't mean that Mike should be mayor again. I say put it on the ballot.
