Mayor Mike sure likes to keep people guessing. Yesterday the mayor altered his position on any extension to the term limits law, saying that he would consider a change to the rule that will force him out of office next year if City Council were to send a bill his way.
Less than a year ago, the mayor said he thought that the council should be stripped of its ability to extend term limits, which voters have elected in favor of twice. There has been lingering speculation that he wants to stay in office, in spite of his aidess proclamations Bloomberg doesn't want to serve another term. Then yesterday, Bloomberg said, "If the City Council comes to us with a piece of legislation, we will look at it, we will consider it, and we will make what I hope is an informed judgment as to what is in the best interest of this city."
He claims that he is still as in favor of term limits as he always has been, however he added, “Whether it's one term, two terms, three terms, I think you can debate that.”
Speculation is that the mayor and Speaker Christine Quinn are plotting to change the law. Quinn has been opposed to term limits for years, but also had said a year ago that she wouldn’t support any change to the law. The mayor is not the only one being forced out of office next year because of the two-term statute—36 out of 51 council members are also at the mercy of term limits in 2009, including Speaker Quinn. Opposition to any change of the law has been led by fellow billionaire Ronald Lauder and former Bronx Borough President Fernando Ferrer. Both have previously waged unsuccessful campaigns to become mayor.

Wow, I guess it is true then. Big Money can't find a candidate that will rid New York City of the middle class and line the pockets of Corporate America.
I think most rumors about Mayor Bloomberg are true--I suspect it's a lot of strategic leaking to get people used to these ideas and then when he gives his about-face, it's like, "Finally you admit it!" less than "You said the opposite 8 months ago."
I think he's been a good mayor even if he's made some mistakes and has some crazy ideas.
This city changes too quickly nowadays for one person to have a 12 year dynasty. I call shenanigans.
As I've said here before, enjoying a period of relative prosperity during one mayor's term is not a valid reason for repealing term limits.
In theory, it would be better to have a person with a high level of financial knowledge managing the city through the tough times in order to keep our heads above the water.
I think if this is actually true, it should go up for vote in November instead of having the Council all agree to save their own asses from term limits.
the danger in this is that the council would want to end their own term limits, and we really can't have those clowns loitering around longer than we do now.
somedays I like Bloomberg - I like that he is DOING things to change the city - although I dont like all of the things he does - that said the voters voted for term limits doesnt seem like a democracy where the politicians can over turn then when they want
Bloomberg should pull a Putin. Go ahead and step down, but make sure you get your handpicked puppet elected so you can stay in power.
Which part of New Yorkers voting twice - in 1993 and 1996 - to restrict local elected officials to just two terms in office, do folks not understand?
Oh, I see, Council members may have to look for real jobs.
Jen,
I agree with the essence of what you are saying. However, I truly believe it is just a way of manipulating the populice to come out say, "no you should for gov. that is where you belong" and then he can look sheepishly in the camera and say he is just doing what the people want without making it look like it was his idea.
I don't trust that short jerk as far as I can throw him.
all valid points, but the more important solution is to have educated voters enforcing the only term limits necessary - elections.
the troubling thing about bloomberg is that not only is he a media whore, he's the pimp too! he has too much control over too many ends of the equation, and people start believing everything they hear about him.
coming into the job he had a terrible plate set in front of him, and he admirably took on the task and did some very good things. he has though made some terrible calls, and chose to remain silent on others.
a change is due, but alas, we're offered up douche vs. turd once again.
jenspellnogood- I'm sitting here looking for the four horseman to come riding through right now because for once you make a sane argument.
I hope that useless turtlefaced fuckwit drops dead .
Sounds like he wants to cap term limits at 3...funny!!!
why do we need educated voters? Makes for boring elections.
I live in Queens and he shits on the place like no other. Good bye Boston carpet bagger.
Something's up with this guy. Why else would he be trying to draw out the Council on a matter he was content to let the voters have their say on? He won't come out and just say he wants another term so he basically asks the Council to "ask" him via a change in the statute? What is he? The Pope? It's unseemly for him to russle his ermine cape so his footmen are sent out to fetch his new mitre?
Put it on the ballot!
1996 is a long time ago.
The arrogance of the rich and the about to be unemployed. Term limits has given minorites their greatest opportunity to enter the political system and poll after poll shows New Yorkers support keeping the current. But that does not seem to impact on billionaire Bloomberg.
But the people can stop him. Join the crowd.

I say tell the creep to get lost, unless we have to endure Mark Green or some other leftist / PC moron who will turn NYC into some mutant mash of San Fransicko & Detroit.
