NYC Dorms Go Back to School Smoke-Free

For college kids heading back to school in New York this Fall, don't plan on pulling all-nighters whilst chain smoking--or covering up your pot smoke with a Marlboro, for that matter. The Bwog just got word of a legislation, which was signed by Gov. Paterson in July, that makes smoking illegal in all New York college dormitories. They add that "a pair of RAs also noted that at least for Columbia, the mere possession of tobacco products is forbidden." Who knew that smoking in the dorms was even legal anymore? As Columbia's website states, there are both safety and health concerns with smoking in living quarters, and from now on, "those who choose to smoke do at least 20 feet away from undergraduate housing and dining buildings" (this includes fraternity and sorority housing).

it'll be easier to smoke the green inside than the brown.

If they enforce the tobacco rules as well as they enforce rules against pot smoking in dorms then you should be able to smoke 20 cigars a day without a problem.

At least in my experience....circa 1985.

did anyone else engineer a gnarly "blow tube" for dorm pot smoking? i can't smell dryer sheets without thinking of smoking pot with my freshman year roommate.

because why should an 18-22 year old be treated like any other adult

Columbia, NYU and any other private college should tell the state to go fuck themselves.

I like that you can't even possess tobacco items. WAre they going to check pocketbooks like my dad checked mine when I was 14? I'm glad this is what the govt does. Anything to keep that giant hole at the former WTC. Way to go losers.

NYU banned cigarette smoking in its dorms in 2006.

Just love those liberals; think or do anything you want as long as it's what we say you can or cannot. What type of free-thinking grads can we expect from these institutions?

People...our future is fucked, and we have only ourselves to blame. Oh and the fucking arabs and chinks too.

Wow, can Bottomless Chips be any more illogical? Columbia and NYU both have stricter rules than the State requires and he says they should tell the State to drop dead. Uh, what? Put down the bong and step slowly away.

@6 - Yeah, like any other adult...

As we allow the cities to ban tobacco, foie gras, trans fats, and anything else that could be bad, society's going to look more and more like a Columbia dorm room. (Or the People's Republic of China -- though it's kinda hard to tell the difference these days.)

But, seriously, you can't go to Columbia if you even want to "possess" tobacco? If true, then, man, what a crock of hyper-controlling, helicopter-parent shite that is.
