Charges Dropped Against Pandamonium Revelers

082108pandamonium.jpgThe charges have been dropped against four people arrested at last Saturday's massive "Costumed-Roving-Street-Party-Apocalyptic-Dance-Rock-Battle" flash mob in Williamsburg, the Brooklyn Paper reports. The event was intended to lure party people into a direct action 'take back the streets' protest, but Capt. Dennis Fulton, commanding officer of Greenpoint’s 94th Precinct, wasn't impressed: "They said they were protesting high rent — and I guess ‘the man’ — but really, they were just individuals in their twenties that were there to have a good time. But what they actually did was waste my time and waste my resources by shutting down traffic and making it so emergency vehicles couldn’t get through." Get used to it, Fulton; a source quoted as "A. Panda" tells BP that since "everyone got their [sic] charges dropped, we should do it again!

silly little posers

intentionally causing traffic jams is akin to screaming fire in a crowded theatre. It jeopardizes the safety and well being of the local populace. If they want to effect "change" why don't they volunteer somewhere, or commit to a life of public service?

"everyone got their [sic] charges dropped, we should do it again!”

There's so much more attention to get! How could they possibly stop now?

this is my problem with this: it was promoted as a "Costumed-Roving-Street-Party-Apocalyptic-Dance-Rock-Battle" but the organizers tricked people into sowing up to some half-assed protest. lame.

Capt. Fulton, the only person who wasted police time, money & resources was you.

Stuff White People Like:

Protesting
Getting Arrested

I'm so glad I was out of town last weekend.

Nice to see the kids are reading their DeBord again.

Sous les pavés, la plage!

I hope they do it again. I also hope the cops beat the living fucking shit out of them.

Take back the streets? From who/what/why? These people don't look very oppressed to me.

True activists should be offended that this group is disguising their street party as a sorry excuse for a protest.

Most of the "protesters" probably don't even care about how much their rent costs... probably because they're the ones who are happy to pay $2000 for a 1-bedroom in Williamsburg.

They should protest themselves!

You're right, what a bunch of "poseurs"—I did not see a single REAL panda amongst them. Who do they think they are?

But this begs the question: if the panda "poseurs" cause traffic jams in a neighborhood filled with poseurs, then isn't that what you want? Because then the poseurs wouldn't get the medical attention they'd need, thus killing off a portion of the poseur population. Shouldn't the thought of that make you smile and thank god for providing sunshine every morning?

Aargh. Gothamist messed up my formatting. My first sentence was: With all the terrible things happening in the world, this fake panda issue definitely needs some attending to.

Remove the panda costumes and imagine that this was a protest about something YOU care about. You guys keep missing the point that our collective right as Americans to assemble *for any reason* is being taken away in this city.
If you're holding a protest and follow city government rules to get permits and cooperate with the police, then who's a poseur?

There are plenty of things I believe in. I don't need to be a disruptive cock to get my points across. I don't have to protest in a fucking panda costume rambling on about taking back the streets. Why don't these fucking anarchists go to some drug ravaged areas and help out the folks there? Take back those streets. They won't. Why? They are gutless little pukes with camera phones looking stir up trouble.

@catatonia:

These people were not attacked with fire hoses. What if your grandmother's ambulance was delayed because of this?

Just like the "yelling fire in a crowded theater" exemption to freedom of speech, "blocking needed roadways" can be an exemption to the right to publicly assemble.

you guys really should consider moving to suburbs :)

This article is FALSE. One unfortunate soul who was caught up in this nightmare is patiently awaiting trial. He is charged with 2 misdemeanors and a violation. Anyone with pictures or footage of the man who was unlawfully thrown to the ground for playing a radio on the sidewalk, please email them to pandamoniumlegal@gmail.com. Thank you.
