16 City Schools on State's "Dangerous" List

2008_08_classroom.jpgThe State Education Department released its annual list of "persistently dangerous" schools, and out of the 19 schools, 16 are in New York City. Which is progress, because last year there were 25 schools on the list. Mayor Bloomberg, who recently touted an 11% drop in felony crimes in schools, said, "Our schools' safety agents, teachers and principals should be proud, but we will push to keep the progress going.'' One school, Jamaica High School, is glad to be off the list--a teacher said, "I'm elated that we're off the list, but we should have never been on there in the first place." But UFT president Randi Weingarten believes there are more than 19 schools on the list--and more needs to be done to help them. Students are allowed to transfer from listed dangerous schools; here's a list (XLS).

10 (or so) more words: take the canoli out of your ass and read the post.

So we should be happy the # is down from 25 to 16 (based on questionable self-reported stats) or that the number is 16 to begin with?

So, when I click on the Excell links I get a list of EVERY school in NYC/NYS.

Where is the list of ONLY the 19 "Persistently Dangerous" schools?

so the students are allowed to transfer schools...what about the employees??

so why is 80% of the schools listed ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS?

How are 7 year olds doing felonies, or is throwing a paper airplane attempted homicide now?

Elementary schools can, and often do, go up to 5th grade. So, the oldest students there would be 10 or 11 years old if they HAVEN'T ever been left back. You will more likely have 12 and the occasional 13 year old there. Violent acts at that age are not as unlikely as you would hope.

The list of only the 19 schools is here: http://www.emsc.nysed.gov/irts/violence-data/2008/PersistentlyDangerousSchools.htm

Many of them are in District 75, which is a special education district that probably includes many emotionally disturbed students.

@Mags
Some of those 12 and 13 year old elementary students are also gang members...
