The NY Times follows up its article about the death of an Hiu Lui Ng while in detention. The engineer who left Hong Kong at 17 overstayed his visa (his U.S.-citizen wife was trying to get him a green card), Ng was "swept into the immigration detention system" last year. His family contends his pleas for medical help were ignored for months until he died days later discovering he had a fractured spine and cancer throughout his body. Another detainee said when Ng was examined by a nurse, "She came out laughing and saying he was faking." There are calls to reform detention centers's medical care, but Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said, "Whether it’s a state prison, federal prison, you’re going to get a certain number of deaths." Homeland security bullies. I'm sure that he cops and FBI agents tell them selves that they are different than the rent-a-cops in "private detentions facilities," but that is denial. The impulse to privilege one man over another (sorry about the sexism) is the genesis of all racism and classism. Bullies.
What's really disgusting about this story is that DHS sent his visa renewal info the the wrong fucking address. So when he didn't comply, and how could he, they went after him as if he was some sort of "terrorist." They fucked up from the outset, and then he died as a result of their criminal negligence. The entire DHS should be disbanded and everyone who works for them, at all levels save for the janitors, should be prosecuted.
I feel sorry for anyone who has to deal with INS/DHS/ICE or whatever they decide to call themselves post 9/11.
I hope a doctor or someone in the medical field reads the story and may have to treat this "nurse" who thinks mr. ng is faking it or better yet anyone who dealt with mr. ng in such an uncaring manner.

That tears it. I didn't think much of Chertoff after his stupid statements about NYC not being that much of a terrorist target, but now I don't have so much as one iota of respect for the SOB. Nobody should ever have to die the way Ng did. That was criminal negligence, plain and simple. This administration can't leave office soon enough. And if we're all lucky, they'll take Chertoff with them.

Chertoff is a first-class incompetent prick. Between the no-fly list debacle and this, he should've been fired a LONG time ago.
