"Bait Car" Reels in Thieves

2008_08_baitcar.jpgThieves eying electronics in cars better think twice: WNBC reports that the police arrested three men who broke into a "bait car"--a vehicle that had a laptop, GPS, and cell phone. Apparently the men, who were charged with grand larceny, criminal mischief and auto stripping, used a rock to break into the car. The Bronx DA's office says the sting was on Southern Boulevard (near Fordham and the NY Botanical Garden), where many break-ins have been occurring. And since cops were monitoring the area, they caught another person breaking into van belonging to Catholic Charities. Now, onto the DUMBO car window smasher! I love love love that the cops are doing this.

They should do something similar to fight bicycle thefts.

Entrapment. Only a car thief would claim that. They ruining business for you, BC?

i'd totally be for this in my neighborhood if it didn't take up another damn parking spot.

Pwned again. Sometimes Bottomless Chips seems like Brainless Chips.

They should do this under one of the arches on the Manhattan side of the Manhattan Bridge. Last time I passed by, there was broken window glass everywhere underneath that. Must have been quite a few smash & grabs.

How in the world is this entrapment? Were the thieves somehow tricked into picking up a rock and smashing the window? Where they then deceived into taking the electronics?

  • entrapment? explain.

  • Bottomless Chips

Entrapment, no matter what the law says.

It's sickening that the NYPD does this.

  • Snoopy

That was a no brainer on the part of the NYPD.
