Suburban New Jersey Cops Get Machine Guns

081908ump.JPGWCBS wants you to be alarmed, at least if you live in a “sleepy New Jersey town” like the ones Bergen County, where local police are using Homeland Security grants to assemble a stockpile of sweet machine guns, particularly the totally bad-ass Heckler & Koch UMP (pictured). Reactions among sleepy locals range from "It's a waste of our tax money," to “I think if they think they need them, then it is good that they have them.” Police explain that the stockpile is a necessary defense against a crazed gunman situation, when there might not be time to wait for a tardy SWAT team. Also, nothing clears skateboarding teens out of the Garden State Plaza parking lot faster than a couple bursts of submachine gun fire.

Wow. I guess I better reconsider putting a front plate on my car!

  • NannyState

That's it. I'm abandoning my plans to start a riot and burn down Paramus.

[17] Gothamist helpfully provided a link to the Wikipedia article on the UMP above. It's available in a 9mm version, among others.

mp5,UMP = made by the krauts

  • Novanglus

It's not even an american gun, what's wrong with the mp5?

The UMP and MP5 are made by the same Non-US company. Where'd you learn your guns?

There's something missing to this story. Beat-Cops aren't actually getting UMPs, are they?

I don't know TOO MUCH about UMPs, but I thought that they only came for the .45, which alone is a serious load for a police department to carry.

I think there's more to the story.

A better point would be why the Homeland security is the biggest waste of funds in the history of government agencies.

Some of us have been saying that since Bush & company first announced the formation of DHS.

The NJ cops don't have to tackle mass cyclists (should the mass cyclists take their "cycling" to NJ); they can just shoot them from far away, siting in their patrol cars while eating donuts.

  • jackistani

I don't want to get in to a stupid conversation about guns, but the MP5 is manufactured by HK as well.

oh and for the record, no, these Bergen cops DON'T need these guns. I liked the Idea of the Newark cops getting them though :)

  • tingo

Knowing a few of the cops in Bergan county, that 'crazed gunman' scenario is their wet dream.

  • GM

yeaaaaah.... not sure why they need these jackistani. These are for close combat/ assault scenarios. SWAT teams spend their time rehearsing for those types of situations, beat cops do not. If there is a gun-wielding crazed madman, I would take a slug loaded-shotgun any day or the semi-auto 9 that they already carry. Any other type of situation, ie hostage or bank robbery, I can't imagine why you wouldn't wait for SWAT.

A better point would be why the Homeland security is the biggest waste of funds in the history of government agencies. All they do is spend our money for equipment and guns that go into storage anyway. It's not even an american gun, what's wrong with the mp5?

    that gun is pretty sweet

  • jackistani

technically its not an assault rifle, it's a sub-machine gun. just sayin

  • Qraymond

I can't believe the Federal government is still shorting NYC on Homeland Security funds but there's money for Keystone Kops to get weapons from the latest PS3 shooter.

    Wait, I can believe that.

  • Brooklynbobby

damn right it's a waste of tax money. a quick trip through bergen county and you'll see there's little need for machine guns there. just a bunch of guys on a power trip who want to feel even more powerful by having bigger guns.

It's probably because they have teeny weeny guns in their pants.

  • Splicer

Assault rifles for cops because nothing says "Protect and Serve" better than giving the loser bully your remember from high school a machine gun.

  • ianmac47

When the revolution begins, some of those rifles will ultimately fall into the hands of the revolutionaries.

  • TimSPC

Where can I find stats on exactly how many shots the Ramsey PD has fired in the past 10 years?

  • mdev

Haha, I grew up in Ramsey. This makes me kind of glad I don't live there anymore! The last thing bored cops in a town like Ramsey need are assault rifles.

  • Cacheton

Really? Is that what BC needs? Local NJ cops with machine guns?

  • Squard

Ramsey cops get assault rifles to stop kids partying and pull over speeders and Newark gets nothing.
