Staten Island Man, Mauled by Pit Bulls, Dies

2008_08_sipb.jpgHenry Piotrowski, the 90-year-old man who was mauled by a neighbor's pit bulls on Staten Island last month, died on Sunday. The Advance reports his death "means prosecutors are almost certain to pursue more serious criminal charges against the dogs' owners, and has spurred renewed calls for a ban on the breed. " Neighbors had apparently called to complain about the dogs before, and one who witnessed the attack said Piotrowski was essentially being "eaten alive." The niece of the victim, a World War II veteran who spent the past six weeks in intensive care and had his leg amputated, said, "Uncle Hank's legacy is whatever changes to the law happen because of this. I understand the police are busy. But when people call over five months saying there's a problem, something should be done."

This is NOT a problem due to the breed. This is a problem because machismo men (with small dicks?) adopt them and train them to kill. Hundreds of thousands of people have pit bulls and they are sweet as pie. This is the machismo bullshit. The same meatheads drive "fast" cars with fins and whatnot. Do folks want to ban those cars?

It drives me crazy that instead of dealing with the actual problem (keeping criminals from adopting said dog or any dog at all for that matter) they are going to try and ban the breed entirely.

It's not the dogs' fault. And, no, I am not some crazy dog lover. I am not a pit bull sympathizer either. I just hate it when we get it so very wrong all the time.

I hate that I just wrote that and didn't offer my condolences to his family. This story haunted me back when it happened. And isn't the owner of the dogs a convicted sex offender? Why does this jackass have these dogs at all?

I agree with his niece. The NYPD need to do their job and follow up especially if my memory is correct regarding his background.

Sickening. Sad. Terrible.

No one deserves a fate like this. This is just sad. Vicious dogs should not be allowed to roam the streets. Most wannabe gangbangers add a pit bull to their arsenal as a form of street cred. This is a quality of life issue that no one seems to give a shit about.

Completely agree with mihow. Old school New Yorkers remember the same bullshit being pulled with Doberman Pinchers, Rottweilers and German Shepherds back in the 70s and 80s.

to expect responsibility from this half brained owners is to expect animals to "read"...They are not responsible PERIOD.

the other owner was a female, according to the complaint against them. and they were white (I have to look for my TV capture file of the owner)
nothing a little zerex and vienna sausages can't handle. don't rely on 911 and the cops, take matters in your own hands.

So generations of breeding a dog to be an aggressive fighter account for nothing right?

Firearms are regulated stringently and I've never heard of one jumping out of one's drawer, running down the street, and shooting someone.

I vote for sausages and antifreeze as well.

I still say that it's not the dog... it's the owner.

Give the sausages and antifreeze to the owner.

Different breeds of dog DO have different temperaments. Dachshunds and Weimarauners are jittery and suspicious of strangers. Great Danes and Saint Bernards (despite their imposing stature) are very gentle and even lethargic. Pit bulls are by nature aggressive and difficult to train properly. There are so many more fatal attacks associated with pit bulls than with any other breed--how can they all be attributed to outright abusive owners? More likely, the owners just can't control the dogs. I've seen petite women, who probably aren't abusing their dogs, walking pit bulls down the street that they can barely keep under control. It's a powerful dog with a powerful bite, a strong will, and a naturally aggressive temperament that is way out of proportion to most other dog breeds.

i agree with mihow because i've raised my Chihuahua to be an angry killing machine that can & will rip your head off so stay back!
