everybody complains about increased traffic, but there's *already* traffic. let's wait until the DOT and the DCP release their data on traffic counts before making any conclusions, eh?

Oh, give it up, "thefacts." You're always pulling garbage out of your ass to try to support your viewpoint. I was actually there and I saw the traffic on the cross streets. There was no congestion and sure as hell no horns since there were cops directing traffic. Even saw a fire engine get through quickly, probably faster than on a normal day because it didn't have to contend with cars blocking the road.

What a fantastic day!!! (well, morning).

I managed to do the entire route, and compared to last week there seemed to be more people enjoying themselves, more merchant activity and better organization from both the DOT (who seemed to have doubled their volunteer force in one week) and the NYPD.

This should be made a weekly event in the city Imagine opening up an Avenue or Broadway the weekend before Christmas! The tourists would love it, and we New Yorkers can always use a break from the incessant invasion of the automobile.

Thank you Mike and Jennette!!

What isn't being said is that the nearby, surrounding and cross streets were subject to congestion and resulting horns.

How 'cool' is that?

it was awesome. It was like that scene in I am legend where the zombies caught will smith but with crazy bike dudes instead of zombies. I xootred instead of biked today and was amazed I could blow by 90% of all the cyclists except for this girl on a pink hello kitty bike with tassles that was really giving me a run for my money. Free helmet, free coffee, free bike rides, sunshine and freedom. This is what utopia and the great city of babel is all about.

Summer Streets rocks!! I was in a cab early this morning and the driver was infuriated about the traffic, said blocking the entire length of the city was overkill, and that with the other street fairs going on west of union square it made it impossible to get around. I wish he would get out of his car and see amazing it is to be a part of it..speed race downtown. Everyone I met was in happy spirits -early or not.

What a cool idea! I was wondering what it was all about.

They should extend it until dusk, then allow businesses along the route to setup outdoor barbecues. Like the San Luis Obispo Farmers Market.

In a place that is so obsessed with work, work, work, work, work, it sure is nice to see a "fuck it, lets disrupt everything and enjoy the summer for a few hours."

People who like to get a jump on the day are up by 7 or 8 and might be able to get out there by 9. I would if I was in the area.

I read somewhere they are shutting down LaGuardia Airport next weekend for drag racing. Is that true?

Who is up by 7 a.m.? Way to think of nobody but your own demographic. Retirees are probably up early on Saturday mornings. Families with young children usually start their day early.

How exactly is Summer Streets privatization of public spaces?

I kinda wish the hours were different on this too. who's up and out in NY by 7 am on a Saturday? It's 10 and I haven't even had brunch, showered, sobered-up enough yet to be out trouncing around. Should be 11 to 5.

Summer Streets is a great way for Bloomberg to promote privatization of public spaces.
