Rafael Sanz experienced what had to be the most intensely emotional day in his life yesterday after his pregnant wife was struck and killed by a van. Dr. Lynn Kempt at St. Barnabas Hospital told the Daily News, "You know that song, 'New York Minute?' I had to tell this poor man that his wife was dead, and then I walked him down to show him his son." The family of Donnette Sanz was about to hold a shower for her will now prepare a funeral instead.
Community members held a vigil outside the hospital for Sean Michael Sanz who was delivered at 3 pounds six ounces. The infant has been upgraded to stable condition. Doctors credited the miraculous survival of the baby to how the speedy action taken by over thirty bystanders who lifted a school bus off of the boy's late mother.
Meanwhile, more information came out about Walter Walker, the ex-con with a suspended license who slammed into her with his van. Walker, of Harlem, works as a man with a van but has not had a driver's license for more than 40 years. When a reporter asked Rafael Sanz what he thought of Walker, he responded, "I hope that guy rots in hell."

If a someone has their driver's license revoked for cause (DWI, aggressive driving, hit and run) and he or she is caught driving with a suspended or revoked license, the penalty should be jail time. How many of these guys, later in their career, kill, maim and devastate individuals or families? They're almost always recidivists. They should be under supervision.
This is all too sad. I liked some quote I read, from a deli worker at the scene--he said that the baby was born with a blessing. I hope the baby understands that in spite of the tragedy, many people were there to help his mother and him.
It is insanity that the cops say his brakes hadn't been working for a couple weeks but he did nothing about it. I've had the brakes fail on my car before and there are few things scarier. Why you would drive one more inch with bad brakes is just mind boggling stupidity and irresponsibility.
Hopefully this tragedy will bring to light those who register their vehicles elsewhere to avoid not only New York's insurance and registration fees, but New York's vehicle inspections. Ever wonder why you see lots of cars with North Carolina plates?
Funny they don't mention the woman could legally have killed her baby that day if she chose. 12 weeks premature? That's legal abortin' age!
Actually, Polemicist, the newspapers don't mention that for at least 2 reasons:
1) It's inaccurate: New York's post-viability abortion restriction provides that no abortion may be performed after the 24th week of pregnancy unless necessary to preserve the woman's life. N.Y. Penal Law ยง 125.05(3) (Enacted 1965; Last Amended 1970), 125.40 (Enacted 1965).
2) Um, perhaps most obvious, it's not very relevant since the woman didn't have a choice here. She was murdered.
I'm really pulling for this baby. That family has had enough pain, let them experience some joy.
