I love stories like this because it shows the empathy we all should have towards each other. If I find a $100 bill, that might be a nice night out for me, but it could be so much more to the person who lost it. It's not what it means to you, but what it means to the other person.

My wife dropped her wallet with $300 cash on the sidewalk. The manager of our local Duane Reade found it and put it in his store's safe until she could pick it up. He refused a cash reward and of course nothing was missing. I once left an expensive smartphone in a taxi. The cabbie called me the next day (my office number was on the lock-out screen) and drove it to my office! He too refused a cash reward. People aren't all bad.

How sad to think the boogie man will come get you because you found $100 on the street. I guess there is no karma for being a really good person that you would find a $100 on the street. DOPE

I found $700,000 tightly wrapped in plastic with duct tape floating in the bay off Miami. I tried feverishly to locate the owner but failing to do so, I just deposited it in a local bank. The branch manager even offered me his new Hummer if I only declared $4900 on the deposit slip!

I seem to recall that you are supposed to take a found item/money/wallet to the police precinct, they'll have you fill out a form and if it isn't claimed in 180 days it is yours. Assuming that you aren't the unlucky finder of a lucky bag.

Hate to rain on your parade, but the Finder's Keepers rule is officially known as theft in NYS. Any found money that goes into your wallet is a crime.

Same thing happened to me. Found $100 bill at lord and taylors. told them and they pocketed it. sooo rude! and now i lost my wallet...hoping to find a samaritan who will return it, with cash inside....

In 6th grade, I found a 20 dollar bill on the ground. Figuring I'd do the right thing, I brought it to the teacher whose classroom I found it outside of. As I was walking away, I saw the teacher pick up the 20 off his desk and put it in his wallet. Since then, I've made it a point to never EVER return cash that I've found. Finder's Keepers..folks.

He must not be from the American Christian Finders Keepers religion that is all the rage here! I once walked up to an ATM, and before I had a chance to put my card in, it spit out a hundred dollar bill! At the time, I figured there was nothing to be done, and I took it. I suppose I could have spent an hour talking to the 24-hour bank operator...

I found $100 in the ATM machine at work once. The money was in the dispenser when I got there. I tried finding out who it belonged to, but no takers. Should I have reported that to the IRS?

i can't say i would do the same. mainly because cash is cash. i did once however, find a $50 in a bar and the guy who dropped it recited the serial number on it... so in that case, it was in fact his.
