If you were wondering where your Netflixed copy of Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay is, Netflix confirmed it had "unspecfied problems" in the past three days which have severely delayed DVD shipments. According to the AP, the "problems affected all...55 shipping centers," causing Netflix' biggest service disruption ever; it was also unable to able to ship any DVDs on Tuesday. Netflix says, "We apologize and we'll be automatically issuing credits to all of you whose shipments have been delayed. Our goal is to ship DVDs as soon as possible and to provide a personalized email update to you if your DVD shipment was delayed." In the past, postal service employees have stolen Netflix DVDs (back in 2003, one USPS worker was found to have 700 DVDs in his home).

"was found to have 700 DVDs in his home"
what a loser!
Description of perp. Description of DVD titles.
I got that e-mail today too. But two of my three showed up anyway. They were supposed to be here on Tuesday, though...
Netflix is the #1 customer service company in the country. I am sure most companies would have tried to squelch this story but they have met it head on to let people know they are having issues. I think it is a software upgrade problem, nothing mechanical. If it were mechanical they could revert to stuffing the envelopes with all those people who are not watching the Olynpics!
I had a strange Netflix problem about a year ago. It seemed that nearly every time I returned a DVD from the mailbox in my apartment building, it would take 2-3 weeks to arrive at Netflix. When I mailed them from work, they arrived in 1-2 days. I suspect the mail carrier was taking them and then re-mailing them later, after he watched them. I couldn't come up with any other explanation.
A few years ago I had so many DVDs which went missing on the way back that they threatened to cut me off. Once I stopped using the mailbox in my building this stopped.
Then, one late afternoon, I was sitting on the IRT opposite a guy who must have had several dozen Netflix envelopes in his bag (couldn't tell if they were incoming or outgoing). He was opening them methodically, glancing at each, going to the next.
When Netflix threatened to cut me off I suggested to the rep (yes, for that they'll talk to you on the phone) that the very obvious red envelope was a factor in possible theft, and he indicated that they recognized this but it was so important for publicity that they weren't likely to switch.
Since I started mailing in the PO only I haven't had a problem, and generally get my discs from the Flushing facility in a day.
two words: BIG BOB
I got the email and my movies all in the same day! They do a great customer service job, I've been with them since 2004, no problems at all. I'm glad my discs weren't delayed or stolen! I always mail them at the post office on the way to work.
I similarly had a problem with DVDs "getting lost" in the mail. When I mentioned this to my postal lady, she said that mail carriers in my neighborhood (morningside hghts) were actually being robbed on a regular basis--they would leave their mail bag on the sidewalk to drop off the mail, and then the bag would be rummaged-through/missing when the mail carrier returned. People were apparently in search of credit card info/checks/netflix. The thefts got so bad that there is actually a kind of Postal Police patrol that occaisonally accompanies the mail carriers now. Either she was telling me the truth or that biatch stole my dvds.
It doesn't surprise me. I frequently pass those unattended mailbags (and they're generally unattended, not in sight of the carrier) and often marvel that we get our mail at all!! It's a little puzzling, actually, that when you mail something it goes into a locked box, you have a locked box in which your received mail is placed, but the mailcart can just be out there, on the sidewalk.
